I can't help thinking it might work better though if the EDF were angled such that it was level when the quad was pitched forward a bit.  In my head it doesn't seem good to try to drive the spinning propeller discs forward when they're horizontal and when it's pitched forward the EDF is going to be driving it towards the deck so you'll have the props fighting against some component of the thrust.

Sadly not, I think we were kind of bad with the lack of ground footage at MD, I even had my camera with me too. I'll definitely get some next time.

You mean function over form? That's territory I haven't considered venturing into.  :)

That said though, some kind of thrust vectoring on the exhaust would be cool!

This body is just a prototype anyway, if there's any noticeable effect then an order for a 90mm EDF will go in the very same day. The Solidworks design has a variable to accommodate the duct size and dimensions everything around it.

So I completed the build by adding a new KK board along with the motors and ESCs form the crashed quad (no need to test!) I just added some leg extenders to allow the battery to be slung underneath the quad and she was done!



I met up with Skyscraper, Foamster and Saburubren today and took the covers off the quad, the results were definitely improved over the first prototype! It's seems worth investing in a 70mm EDF unit, which will give three times the thrust and would warrant a separate battery for the EDF itself.

One day I'll be able to upload a video to YouTube which doesn't end in me crashing, but not today! Here's the footage:

It seemed to end in a remarkably similar fashion to the flight at Mad Dogs, my thinking is that one ESC gives up following a voltage drop. A separate battery to supply the EDF is probably the way to go, if I go up on the size of the EDF next time then I'll definitely run that on a 5S anyway.

Awesome Neil, much better than before!

It flew! Took a while to get going but pretty speedy once it got going. Also enjoyed the piroetting as FC tried to figure out WTF was going on  :) Now eagerly awaiting the twin 90 mm version :)

That might be a worthwhile investment Andy, just to be able to win the Mad Dogs speed challenge with a quad!
