I have never powered up the Vtx with no antenna, but i bought it 2nd hand.  Could it be that its damaged in some way?

I'll have a play tomorrow.  If i get no luck am i looking at a new transmitter?

It would certainly be useful to swap it out, I had a VTX that was fine, and then suddenly the range went and the picture dropped off like a stone (although that was more like 400m than 100m)

Have you ever powered the VTX for any amount of time with out the antenna being attached ?

No, I have not but being a 2nd hand unit I do not know if the previous owner did. It gets fairly warm.  Not sure if that's a good sign or not.

They all get warm to the touch and need an antenna connected to prevent a burn out. You could send the vtx to Dave Brown for a check over. He is the FS service man in the UK. FYI I am getting 1800m range at 150m asl with futaba 14sg and R7008Rs rx on a clear dry day. Video is still good at that range until I turn for home. Then the motor and battery mask the signal and I just have to fly through it or climb.
This tx rx combo gives rssi downlink to the tx screen so I can see the surge and fade that triggers RTL.
EDIT

I just remembered that we had a similar problem with Attitudes earlier this year. The picture and range went right off. Turned our to be that the vrx antenna had been over tightened and cracked the pcb. Got a new one from FS and the difference was immediate. The pcb had been cracked for ages. Worth a check by getting some one to tune into your tx
