Flight cam shorts out, storm kicks in, and then I have to LOS land

During my flight with FBS and Krikey on Saturday, my first flight of my wing resulted in the camera shorting out mid flight and leaving me with a completely black (although OSD populated) screen.  Storm worked fine, but with my less than expert LOS flying I don't think any of us actually expected a landing in the end.

Any extra hints for these DVRs (I got mine from BevRC - but they are essentially the same as JapanDVR/Firstpersonview/et al sell) please feel free to share.  It doesn't lock up every time I get static, but the fact it can do so at very crucial times is really annoying.

I use an Archos 500. They don't make them any more, its a bit on the big side but its been good to me and the battery lasts forever and it doesn't mind static.

Hey Wayne, that was definitely a brown pants moment... I do like your narrated videos :)

with the DVR, I had the same one... got mine from BEVRC too. I can't remember where from (you might need to google it) but I installed the latest firmware, basically like you probably already know, it's a .bin file you place on the root of the SD card and then boot up the DVR. But like I said, I can't remember where I got it from, perhaps the comments section of the item on BEVRC, but that website is a bit buggy at the best of times.

I too had a few issues with regards to non-recordings, but it was only on a very few occaisions, perhaps 3 or 4 in the whole time I owned it... I figured out that I had to stop the DVR recording before turning off the VTX or unplugging the AV in cable to the DVR... if I were to not stop recording first, I would end up with the same as what you got here, a tiny non playable file.

After I figured this out, I never had any more lockups... the only other issue I had was the battery draining in very cold weather, this can be easily remedied on a GS by powering the DVR with 5v from a BEC or similar.

As for the camera, I'm assuming it's a bare board camera?

Well I have started coating all my board cameras with liquid electrical tape, at first I thought it may cause issues with certain components overheating but then it occurred to me that these bare PCB board cameras were never designed to be used with the PCB exposed to the environment, in CCTV applications they're always cased.

anyway, I've never had any issues with my liquid electrical tape coated cameras and now they're pretty much waterproof.

I actually have an idea to completely dip a board cam in the stuff with the AV cable connected... thereby creating a completely air/watertight coating around the camera, I will place blu-tac or similar over the lens to avoid damaging it, then carefully remove the dried silicone and blu-tac... I will then place the camera under water whilst recording on the DVR
