Does it completely smash to smithereens or does it just bend and snap where it is? How brittle is it?

It turns into confetti.

Some minor crashes it will just break at the joints or along a layer. a blob of Ca works.

PLA filament is quite brittle. There are others on the market such as PetG which is better but they all suffer the same fate.

The other factor is that you have to print them with a single shell (wall ) to keep the weight down.
