I can remember watching the Paris Dakar rally about 20 years ago and some of the bikes were still using scrolling maps very similar to those

Clever stuff when you think about it... they'd have to draw the map scale based on how "fat" the roll of paper was, because as anyone has used a toilet roll knows, the fatter the roll the slower it'd spin...
