Am really tempted by the Drak but I've only just got round to repairing my Z3 which I crunched up with 3 failed launches.  >:(

I'm just building my z3 and have read lots of people have crunched the nose. I'm convinced having a long hollow nose is unwise. At least with the z3 type of foam (but some people have snapped the Drak nose off too!). I'm convinced wedging the entire nose with solid foam- and then just cutting a small section for the battery- is the way to stop the nose snapping.

That is the best Drak video I have seen. By far. The guys incredibly annoying. But he has made some very sensible mods to that Drak.

1) at last. Someone who isn't using a shitty mobius. And someone who respects an aerodynamic profile.

2) sensible Velcro mods to the wings.

3) at long last!!!! Someone running a 6s motor on a Drak!!! That thing will be bloody efficient. Far more so than Chris 5s setup IMO.

My only criticisms is he doesn't seem to have laminated the plane- time constraints im sure. And he's presumably not aiming for crazy long range because his video system isn't suitable nor is his separation. In which case, a faster less efficient setup would work well.

That's the only video which has made me really want one so far tbh, DESPITE his irritating voice and personality.

Agreed on the annoying thing I think he needs to back off the caffeine before a vid! Did you see the Fatshark interview? It was truly terrible because he was so over enthusiastic.
I thought the massive void in front of his battery should have had a chunk of foam filling it up. I believe you get all the blanks inside the drak so you can pack it out for extra support. It does look so good in the air though. I can't wait to see one with the canards on it...

Yeah I think you get the foam blank for the nose. Only prob is you may need to adjust cg and maiden with a super light battery. So I would always use cheaper foam blank and then, when everything was dialed in- use the the best bit of foam for super consistent battery position.

That was the first vid of his I have ever watched in it's entirety. (Ok, so I skipped the first 2 mins, but watched the rest). Every other one I have seen, I skip at least 80% of it.

I've always thought the vlog thing is a bit weird. Imagine meeting a vlogger? A random guy chatting into a little camera whilst doing the same boring day to day stuff we all do? It may not be intended to be but it all seems a little sanctimonious.

A bit more done this weekend as the weather has been cr*p again, she lives, just need to sort throws and CG and she's good to go.
Some footage of the power tests with all the numbers, she peaked at 63Amps static with SS motor on a 11x7 APC prop, should unload loads inflight though.

Mr Mutley,

Quick question, where did you get your printed vinyl from, and what is the thickness/weight of it?

Cheers!

Hey Andy
I got my vinyl from an Irish company on ebay, will see if I can dig up the link for you later. As far as weight and thickness goes, I've no idea but you should get it off the site.
Jumped on the bathroom scales last night with the Drake and with Lam and vinyl it's just over 3.6Kg flying weight, that will do for me.

Hi Mutley, just starting my Drak build and have watched most of Chris's videos. I am unable to find any suggestions regarding how to fix/hinge the red cargo hold lids. On some pictures, folk seem to put in a fold at the front of the two side lids and possibly goop them in? I can't work out how anyone has fixed the front end of the front middle section - how have you done yours? Cheers

Hey Dave, the main battery bay I've used Scotch packing clear tape and hinged it, the side VTX bays I used 2mm corex instead of the 4mm corex and used the scotch tape again. This is the same method used on my Z3 and it's worked well for the last year, will try and get some pic's for you later.
Post some pic's of your build if you get a chance, either here or your own thread.
Good luck with the build

The pic's, hope this helps.

A few pic's before the maiden, no excuses now as she's finished and I had 7 flights today with the Twinstar to get me back in the zone.

The z3 is a lot smaller than I thought nice fleet there!! Good luck with the maiden.

Nice. Good luck for the maiden!
Comparison shows just how big the Drak is.

mutley2

Cheers Tony,
Should have a go at the maiden this weekend if the weather plays ball, I like a bit of a breeze on a maiden as it helps with launch and landing speed, bring it on...
