After some overheating issues, I've now installed a different motor and ESC. A Turnigy 2830/11 1000kv with a 10x5 prop (I've got 2 of these from my skymule that never got off the ground) and a Turnigy Plush 30A ESC. This time I've got the ESC on the outside:

I've also trimmed the foam at the back near the motor mount... the motor was completely hidden by the foam and I don't think much air was flowing around it... it can't harm it eh?

Wow that's a coincidence.

Been going through all my parts in the corner of that'll come in handy one day.
Guess what I found?

A turnigy 2830/11 motor exactly the same.
Think I might have 4 of them the a quad I once made.

Have you flown it with that motor yet.
I can't even remember the specs for it.

Looks like the Talon might have a stock over heating problem, went though all sorts with mine until I mounted it on the out side, works a treat now.
Next build it will start on the outside ;)
Skyhunter, Drak, Mini Talon, Z3, Z2 and 250 Vortex. :overexcited:

I've just been disappointed for the first time regarding my mini talon build....
Got to the servo connection stage and was very surprised by their choice of connections supplied :(

FPVSteve

Just maidened mine tonight and wow, flies like its on rails. I thought it was going to be a handful but it's very sedentary at low speeds with no nasty tendencies and it flew like there was no wind at all. Awesome.

Next step, goggles on.

Soarer20

Yes Dave. The servo horns and rods are not much good.
I used some heavy duty bolt thru horns with a dose of epoxy and used alloy clevis on the rods.
Much more confidence in them now and the rods don't flex while operating.

What could possibly go wrong :)

Isnt a 10 x 5 prop a bit on the big side for this 28/30 Turnigy...?....Im always doubtful about collet type prop hubs with this size of prop too....should be a bolt on prop hub instead..?
The split collet hubs are also far too long for my liking...far too much overhang, I mean there must be 8mm of unused shaft showing behind the prop, with a big long spinner nut....It might look pretty, but they rarely run true and vibration is usually the result...
Can you get a nice short bolt on prop driver for this motor...?..and what brand is that prop in the photo, it looks good...I have a similar setup on my Bixler, and its a Jello monster...:(

A dremel always sorts the 8mm of left over prop shaft space lol

Today's flight with the Talon nearly ended in complete disaster !

Word of warning with the NTM 1400KV An 8x5 prop is too much for it. Climbing up trying to get to the clouds the amp reading just died. I still had control though so knew it was the ESC / Motor.

I was 2km out but plenty of height and the wind on my side so I managed to get her back and landed next to the car. As soon as I picked it up that familiar smell of burning was present.

Yup the motor was charcoaled !

As you can see the motor wires were completely burnt through, all the windings black, motors a gonner guv :(

So don't be running these on 8x5 kiddiewinks ;)

Brucey

Lucky your weren't caught downwind.

FPVSteve

Bah Ian I knew it. My motor is fine it's just overpropped.

So what are you supposed to use? 6x4 is too little 7x5??

Coyote

8x4 takes it to a few amps short of max so in theory 8x4 should be ok, but I wonder ............

I have opted instead to go for the Sunnysky 2216 1250KV now with a 9x6 prop instead.
