I bought 1 for a friend, saved on postage.

I'll be trying mine on my tracker. It will be much lighter than the massive patch antenna, so will be easier on the trackers servos.

The plan is to eventually have a directional UHF antenna (maybe a moxon, evetually a yagi) and 1280 antenna on the same tracker for ultimate link quality within the radius I tend to fly, and super long range for when I want to push the limits.

Hi Blue,

Sounds like a good idea, give the Tracker an easier time for sure......Not sure about fitting your UHF tx antenna on the Tracker with it though.?....wont that compromise your Video reception..?

You really wouldn't want linear antennas for 5.8 anyway, a skew planar and helical would be better for 5.8 and not that much more expensive from Bignose13.

It's my opinion that 1.2 doesn't need circularly polarised antennas (I honestly just think people use them because everyone else does) stock linear antennas have performed really well for me. I guess in the past if you wanted a really lightweight and compact directional antenna for 1.2, the only option available was the Circular Wireless CP Patch antenna, in this case yes, of course you'd need a matching CP skew on the plane.

The rubber duckie antenna in this picture is the antenna I use on my VTX... it's the stock antenna that the set ships with, it's actually a dipole inside there. OK so it wouldn't perform as well as a dipole made to the specifications of my EXACT channel but I've been 5.5km with this rubber duckie on both the VTX and the VRX with perfect picture quality.

It may, it may not. I can't remember where but I saw a ground station where someone had a 1.2 and UHF directional antenna on their setup and they said they were lucky to not get any interference.

It will just be experimental anyway, that's half the fun of this hobby, ever so slightly changing things... trying to make things better... finding things that work and that dont work and taking the next steps :)

Lol.....Those guys in Texas who supplied my 1280 Yagi are going to be doing some more business with the UK soon....

Its a bit of a bargain really.... $6 for such an efficient directional antenna.....

Ill be interested to see how your new little DVR works Blue...:)

Me too, if its even just a little bit better than the built in DVR of the domV2 goggles, I'll be happy. It only cost £14 :)

Thinking about issues with 1.2 and UHF on the same tripod...

They are directional so most of the RF will be going forwards toward the plane, and not towards each other... however they will be within half a foot of each other so that might not matter.

My UHF antennas are made to centre on 440MHz to work with extreme hopping on EZUHF (430-450MHz). The third harmonic of 440MHz is 1320MHz... that's 40MHz away from 1280 which is the centre frequency of this Yagi... however, the fact that the 1.2 yagi is receive and the UHF antenna will be transmit, and the fact they'll be close to each other this might not matter either.

The only way to know for sure is to risk it for a biscuit as my daughter says. :)

I'm on the hunt for a DVR, have you got a link please?

Filters.

One on the 1.2 VRX so only 1.2 is received (attenuates UHF) http://hobbywireless.com/attenuators-filters-antenna-adapters-c-179_73_82/high-pass-433mhz-sma-filter-blocks-433-mhz-p-840.html

One on the UHF TX to attenuate the harmonics so only UHF is transmitted http://hobbywireless.com/attenuators-filters-antenna-adapters-c-179_73_82/low-pass-filter-for-433mhz-for-lrs-transmitter-p-712.html

Oh, ok....Filters...My 1.2G Module is always a fair distance from my UHF TX...I dont appear to have any problems with it like it is....The only minor problem I still have is a constant periodic blip showing up on my DVR recording...It also shows up on the Live feed of the Monitor.
I have a suspicion its caused by the DVR making and splitting files as it records....When I make my new compact Yagi Module, Im going to try powering my HK DVR using a dedicated 5V BEC....Im hoping this will also cut down on power consumption as I think my DVR has a linear regulator in it...very wasteful and it gets hot too....:(

If this antenna is used on the tracker then what is the preferred antenna on a) airborne vtx and b) ground FPV?  Also would the performance of the Rx antenna be affected by putting it in some kind of plastic or fibreglass case?

Coyote

In both cases a 3 - 5 dBi rubber duck will be fine, it's just a linear antenna.

Plastic / fibreglass does not affect the RF so an enclosure is fine.
Education and schoolin is good, but FPV is gooder :)

BlueFlyer

I just use the stock antennas that come with the vtx. I've opened one up and they're actually sleeved dipoles.

I plan on getting a few dragonlink dipoles for my air gear as they're a bit more compact

BigT

I agree they look more robust as well. I presume they mount with the rods north south?

If by North/South you mean to the sky and to the ground then yes :)

Mine will be having it's first outing tomorrow on the newly renovated mini talon.

I'll post my thoughts afterwards

Mine arrived yesterday, great service, no duty etc to pay.
