Hi Jim,

That's great! Thanks for doing the video.

One question: When your's goes into failsafe you have a little throttle on.  Is that important or does it ignore the throttle setting in fail safe?

Thanks again!

Simon

Set your fail safe above 10% otherwise it won't work

so set the fail safe to say 15/20% and the RTH Should work

Yes Mark you have to redo dance after any change you make on the quad, any change. :D

Jim - when you say any change, that's physical positioning isn't it - you don't have to do the dance if you just made a software adjustment via the Naza do you ?

Only physical changes m8,  add anything remove anything move anything redo it. And yup simon above 10% throttle.

Compass calibration vid now rendering or 'The NAZA Dance' as its known!

My next question is going to be about gains.  Mine are set at the defaults:

Basic gain:
Pitch: 130%
Roll: 130%
Yaw: 120%
Vertical: 130%

Attitude gain:
Pitch: 140%
Roll: 140%

I see your's are set at 100% across the board Jim.  But you have your's set up for remote adjust and I don't yet (the two extra servo cables are at work - I'll grab them tomorrow).

What do you reckon gains should be set at?

Cheers!

Simon

Simon,

Ignore all other settings in the video as I did a reset to do the video, I'm going to do a dedicated video for gains soon, and yes I use remote gains apart from vertical which I have at 160.

Basic gains are very good and will work just fine, I will go into it deeper in the upcoming video.

Hi All,
I have problems with a NAZA in failsafe mode. Its a quad and fly's well in Manual mode but in Attii Mode it is exceptionally slow to respond to changes in throttle, especial during and landing phase when the motors tend to run on at closed thro The motors also start at a high speed when arming so high that the quad leaves the ground slightly, yes I have the motor mixer slider as far to the left as it will go.
Fail safe is a disaster. I set it up almost exactly as the video that starts this thread, but used Swich D on my Futaba T10CG to inject an offset into the Chanel 5 that controls mode. I tested the fail safe "activation" by both switching off the TX and operating the switch, not at the same time but in 2 separate tests, both "did what it says on the tin". So to the fatefull flying test. Set the home position by powering up and arming in the middle of the flying club field. Flew about 60 yards down the strip at about 20 ft high and switched in Failsafe via sw D. The quad rose to about 60 or so feet and started to head for home, it reached what I guess was the home point and then started to hover at about the same height. I hovered for about 10-20second then started to descend very slowly. After about 15-30 seconds of slowly descending all 4 motors stopped. I reset Sw D and the motors restarted but of course too late. Not a lot of damage only to the reputation of the NAZA. I have flown the Quad since and it is just as unresponsive to throttle in Attri Mode and still flies well in Manual.Settings are:Quad X, Motor Mixer Low, Cut off Intelligent, Basic gains all 120%, Attitude gain 150%, Intelligent Orientation Selected controlled by Chanel 6 but as yet not enabled, Go-Home and land.
Any ideas very welcome

Hi John,

1) First let me see some pics of your quad
2) what lipo and how old?
3) how heavy is your quad?
4) Turn off voltage monitor see if that helps (if not set correctly it will rob power but not in manual mode )
5) what motors and esc's?, if not the DJI esc's have you calibrated the esc's endpoints? (dji ones don't require this)
6) Re calibrate your TX
7) Make sure you re calibrate the compass after any change on quad
8) set vert gain to 180
9) make sure you don't have dual rates set on tx or any expo/throttle curves on throttle channel
10) the motors will run on for 3-5 secs after landing and in Manual mode they will just keep running

I'm sure we can get to the bottom of it, the Naza is awesome and I've not found one that cant be sorted but that said im sure a few bad ones could appear!! (did I say that?!!). All of the above may seem basic to you but without having it sat in front of me its not easy to diagnose in text :)

Cheers

Jim.

Hi Jim,
Long List to go, sorry no pic will forward when I have worked out how to insert same.
2.  I have 6 off 5Ah 3 cell of various types, 3 are nano-tech all > 30C. I use them one at a time of course, in the NAZA and also in a MultiWii quad of very similar weight and power. From the MultiWii I get 10-15 min flights without "Pushing my Luck". They have all an average of 20-40 charge discharge cycles. They are all routinely checked using a proprietary battery checker after each charge and regularly balanced.
3. 1.12 Kg battery no VPV gear.
4 Will do.
5. All ESC's end points set independently of the NAZA,using a servo tester.
6. Do you mean go through the "NAZA software Assistant" calibration routine, move all the sticks through their full range ect, If so done on several occasions.
7. Done at least each time I did the above calibration. However the success of the process, as monitored by the colour of the LED had to be repeated on a few occasions.
8. Will do.
9. Done all rate inhibited and no expo.
10. That would be fine if the motors spooled down to a lower speed.

Hope that lot helps

Thanks for advise so far pics to come

regards

John

Hi John,

Have you tried points 4 & 8 today?

Lets go back to the first point of No. 5) what motors and esc's?

Hi Jim,
Some work and some Wind in the frozen North prevents me from flying but a quick tethered run in the back garden was risked yesterday. Its a very small garden so no flight possible and its a fair trek to our flying site. I am afraid  the motors still seem to run very fast on arming. Local weather today seems a lot calmer unfortunately  I am working late afternoon early evening so no time to get to our flying site, such is the cross that we self employed carry.
Will report as soon as I have tested as all your suggestions are now in place. Still haven't managed to down load a picture, lack of time to try. Quick idea, on calibration of end points of ESC's. Do you find with your Quad that the minimum motor speed can be reduced using the Assistant software? If so I definatly have a problem with Naza/ESC's, I could however artificially increase the lower setting of throttle during calibration hence when Naza signals low it will be below the calibrated minimum for the ESC's, just an idea!

ps
I should read before writing Motors are Turnigy 28/26 1200Kv ESC's are Hobby King "Blue Series" 30 amp.
Its the same setup as my other Quad MultiWii FC. I also use the ESC's on a Hex MultiWii but with different motors. The calibration routine on all as been the same.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the PM I feel such a fool being unable to find the original thread,  :'( never mind you "rode to the rescue" and now I have "bookmarked" it.
The Quad is almost there I had a quick flight this afternoon, managed to sneak off early, all, apart from Fail safe, which I haven't tried,  seems much better. The problem with the high throttle on arming has gone away. I started again  with a blank configuration in my Futaba 10C and put every thing to default. I then started again and set and calibrated every thing including re establishing the range of the ESC's. I now find that I have to set the motor mixer to two clicks up to get all motors to start. I haven't had time to investigate which setting or settings was wrong but I suspect it was Trim or sub trim.
The vertical gain is now 200% and still a little sluggish in height control and it wonders a little with left thumb off the stick, but I can work on that.
I will in the very near future, when I get a little more play time switch the Naza to my Hex. It flies very well  on MultiWii and is a lot more stable and "solid" than either of my Quads, so who knows maybe an other load of problems for you to help with.

Keep up the good work, helping people and the great flying as seen on your Vids

Regards

John
