I believe anybody to make that and achieve what you've done is fantastic. This is what FPV is all about. Well done. ;)

Good to hear you got rid of the noise. I might have a spare 2.4g bi quad you can have.

Hey Andy,
My arduinos rocked up. Did you have a pic of wiring direct to the gps?

Ok i have everything buy my UBOX GPS, for now I have attached GTPA010 Eagletree GPS
I have programmed both boards.

wired the receiver. Now starting transmitter

For the TTL, I gather the TTL is for the STM32F4 and the RS232 is for the FrSky transmitter?

Hey Andy,
What are some easy ways to test the serial connections between each board?

I checked there was something coming out of the transmitter by using putty on that serial port but is there a way to use the ST-LINK to show the data coming in from the transmitter?

I can use either operating system, I have made a Ubuntu VM to put the arduino code on.

I think the GPS is working I got the fast flashes after a bit (after I swapped rx and tx on the gps plug, I didn't know which was which)

for the receiver do I need to have the arduino plugged into a analogue or digital telemetry port?

Hi Brenton,

Good question. Your GPS unit sounds close to whats in the code at the moment, so if we are lucky it might even work as is!

You can see if the airborne part is working by looking at the little green LED on the Arduino once switched on.

Bear in mind you should do this outside in a nice open area so the GPS has a chance to get a lock.

On initial startup the Arduino Pro Mini LED blinks 6 times rapidly .
After a 1/2 sec delay blinks 5 times more slowly.
After a 1/2 sec dealy again  continues blinking very slowly.
It does that until the GPS achieves satellite lock on 5 satellites
Then it blinks faster with a shorter on period so giving a heartbeat pulse .

I've done a Youtube video of the startup sequence.
DIY Antenna tracker airborne GPS unit startup sequence
Bit blurry sorry about that!

If you get to the blinking slowly part and after (say) 10 miins it doesnt change to the heartbeat then it will mean that The unit isnt understanding the GPS.

Anyway meanwhile I'm now looking at basing the GPS code on the Ardupilot code rather than rolling my own. They seem to cater for several different GPS units. (I hope also to make an OSD based on the MinimOSD hardware. It'll be necessary to solder onto one of the chip pins to get data output but that isnt impossible.)

EDIT: Actually the following isnt necessary - you can see from the LEDS on the Discovery board - see my next post...
As for testing the Ground Side from the Transmitter, the easiest way is to get a RS232 to usb cable. However if you have the RS232 to TTL cable then you can connect the TTL side of that to your FTDI cable (which I assume you have to program the Arduino).

The data comes out in binary format so will look like goblydy gook. I have written an app to decipher it..
https://github.com/kwikius/frsky_data
but its written for Linux. I'll have to get around to rewriting it for Windows ASAP! ( assuming your OS is Windows?)

Anyway First to see if you are getting the heartbeat pulse indicating the airborne part is reading the GPS correctly.  I'll see what I can do to port the ground side App to Windows. Shouldnt be too much. Just rewrite the serial port code I think!

Thank for persevering with it  :)

regards
Andy

Oh I did get the faster flashing light now after some moving around its not speeding up anymore.

This little arduino gets hot are they meant to?

I did have trouble getting the STM32 libraries setup in Ubuntu im having gcc compiling errors but ill work through them (think ill have to start again)

(I am breaking up posts to get my count up so I can pm)

Did you have the design files for the tracker that you made in freeCAD up anywhere?

Tell you what would be a good project.. Try and replicate the EagleEyes protocol, I bet you could sell loads of those as people could buy an EE ground-station to do the tracking/diversity..

This is the problem, there is no public spec :( the EagleEyes Ground Station is a great piece of hardware at a bargain price but you have to have the whole EagleTree setup to use it :(
