Title: My first go at fpv
Post by: Charliewalker on February 18, 2013, 09:58:28 AM
Here's my first attempt at a fpv platform,I flew it yesterday & it went very well for about 2 min's when the motor although only running about 1/3 thottle decided to burn out,I think the reason's obvious if you look at the first pic,I moved the motor forward to help with C of G,( it's a 300mm long shaft with two extra bearings, one behind the prop & the other midway between motor & prop. Well, seemed like a good idea at the time! So it's up to the model shop for another motor a bit smaller than the 3536 that i'd used & try again! & no I havn't put the fpv gear onboard yet.

Really nice looking 'plane. That't the sort of platform I wanted to fly really. i'm not a massive fan of my Raptor or the bixlers etc as far as looks go, but they do fly really sweetly. But yeah... all the best with that!

I'm not a fan of foam either & I love building thats why I built this one.but saying that here's a pic of one I built earlier when I was playing about with depron, 2300 span, I was thinking this morning wouldn't it be cool to have a camera in the cockpit of that one paning round to see two motors each side, 'em'..... maybe my next project!!

Charliewalker  An interesting layout i take it the motor is there to keep the cog correct prob needs some cooling but alot of drag on that shaft too.

Looks like an exciting ride sorted when u fpv it ;D

I'm never an advocate of adding weight to balance a model but there are times when it is the least bad option. This might be one of those occasions. However as Dizzy points out, cooling is needed. That in itself would cause some drag if you leave the motor where it is. I think the solution might be in the FPV gear though. If you mount at least some of it forward then you can reposition the motor aft again onto the outside of the aft fuselage bulkhead where the heat that builds up in it can dissipate naturally. Even if you don't want to install the FPV gear at this stage you could use dummy weights to simulate the installation. The when it comes to the actual installation you would not have to rebalance the model.

thanks for your thoughts on that, since my last post I've picked up a slightly smaller motor as the original must have been binding to burn out after a couple of min's plus it was only running 1/3 to 1/2 throttle, & I've changed the 3700 4s for 2 x 2200 3s, the 3s weigh a tad more & being pysically smaller I can push them further up the nose which sorts out the C of G. If the weathers ok tomorrow I'll try it out again.

Hey CharlieWalker.. some good advice there... they know what they're on about eh.  Nice Lanc... have a look at mine in 'Granpaws secrets in the hangers section. I would though get a few FPV flights under your belt before you decide to sacrifice your Lanc. I understand they are very tricky to fly with a terrible tendency to tip stall if you haven't enough airspeed on for a turn....all that weight on the wing....still haven't flown mine yet, ignore this post if I'm stating the obvious to you.
G'paw... ;D

Hi Granpaw, thats a nice Lanc you got there,a proper one. mine was built out of Depron, weighed about      2 1/2 kg & flew on 4 of those cheap little red 2822 motors 4 for about £20. but it did fly well, maiden flight was the day they opened the bomber memorial in London.I flogged that one off on ebay....but...... I've got another one on the go with fpv in mind this time 2600mm, but i wanna get used to flying with the goggles on first, maybe we can get some formation flying in! anyone got a Spit & a Hurricane!!!

yeh, no probs, that'll be great.I've just come back from second test flight,......complete success, first flight   14 1/2 mins then landed to warm the pinkeys up 5 mins later up she went again for a further 12 1/2 mins
a total of 27 mins without a battery change! admitted it was only an endurance test. Well pleased. Now where's that vtx & camera.....

Well I've done it,I've flown fpv sorta, I built the MK2 using the booms from MK1, I've had it ready to go for about a week after making changes to cure problems I found in the MK1,just waiting for some decent weather. while it sat there in the shed it kept whispering to me "when we going flying",I'd put the cam & vtx on board just to check out everything working ok.This morning the sun shining hardly a cloud in the sky so I thought "go for it". Got to the field set the video camera on a tripod turned on tranny vtx & plane, put the goggles on, strapped the Archos to my arm started recording.
Then threw the MK2 into the air,did a couple of circuits to see how it handled....great, pulled down the goggles.......10 secs.......panic, pulled em up found the plane. So after that I decided fly around calmly & have a quick peek every so often, thats seems to work! Then off home to change my underwear & have a peek at video's.So yes I've done it all 10 secs of it (probably 5) Moral of this storey don't go fpving when your a novice without a spotter

Congratulations.

I started out flying with a monitor.. glancing down n looking back at the plane.. But I had an Easystar which is probably much slower than that. I have no doubt it will get easier, but its not the easiiest plane to start fpving onI would have thought!

regards
Andy

yeah I know she looks a right handful but even with 4400 lipo's on board she's only 77oz's with a flat bottom section which works out about 15oz sq ft & a doddle to fly,but maybe your right perhaps something that floats to start with!

Get good altitude Charlie, then you've got room to make mistakes. I've got to say, as a novice myself... only 3 fpv flights under my belt... things didn't start making sense to me untill I got an OSD.. with an arrow home function.. then I started to relax a little...

There's quite a lot of posts in the OSD section with lots of information about lots of systems. Eagle tree seem popular, but a bit complicated. After much reading of other folks posts and asking a lot of dumb-assed questions I decided on an EZ OSD. Simply because it was totally compatable with my Immersion rc vtx. Also there's a post which demonstrates in simple terms how to connect up the EZ OSD to the rest of the set up, ie vtx etc.. Take your time, have a good read & choose the right one for you with the functions you want.
