Title: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: Flyboysee on December 03, 2013, 05:56:07 AM
April 26 and 27 2014
(subject to Cricket fixtures which will be decided by 1 Jan 2014)

At this meet there will be four tiers of booking as follows;

1. Whole weekend camping, 2 x BBQ lunches and drinks included for £50 all in.
2. Saturday Day Fly with BBQ lunch and drinks £30
3. Sunday Day Fly with BBQ lunch and drinks £30
4. Day visitor / spectator (adult / child) with BBQ lunch and drinks included £8

All flyers will receive a quality 'I flew at Mad Dogs' T-shirt - please specify size when booking.

Whole weekend campers must book by 1 Feb 2014, after which the remaining day slots for Saturday and Sunday will be open. Payments to be in by 1st of April for campers, and by the 15th of April for Day Flyers.

My cousin will be doing the BBQ - he is a better cook than me, and this will free me up to fly and get pissed :)

We will close off bookings at a maximum of 12 flyers per day.

Sponsored prizes for challenges

A. Speed Trials
B. Long Range Flight

Camping

Either pitch a tent on the club house side of the field or sleep in the club house on a stretcher and sleeping bag. Camper vans welcome, but must be parked in the entrance parking (about 50m from the club house).

Showers are available - please make sure you have flip flops to protect against 'jock strap and foot disease' from the cricketers.

Night Flying

Night flying will be available on the Friday and Saturday evening.
Friday and Saturday night meal is a bring and BBQ - Waitrose, Sainsbury's and Asda are all within a few short miles of the venue.

Why the hike in price?

Two reasons;

1. You will get two amazing South African Barbies included in the price, as well as beers and cool drinks - all top notch quality cooking and ingredients. There are a few months between now and then, so start saving your sheckles!

2. There will be a very good quality 'I flew at Mad Dogs' T shirt included!

In addition, the event will be sign posted, and I hope to be able to make up 12 ground station flags / markers.

How the money gets spent?

1. £10 donated to the Cricket Grounds per flyer per day.
2. £12 per T shirt
3. The rest goes to food, drinks and ground station flags / banners

Who's in?

M D 4 date was changed & moved to the date I'd booked holiday, (RPO) so although I really enjoy the meets               & I know date's not within our control yet I'd like confirmation of date before I book.

Hi Richard - definitely keen as a day visitor for at least 1 of the 2 days  - will work on getting a weekend pass but that might be a tough ask with the missus.

I'm almost convinced you plan these meets around my work stints.
I tend to be either just coming back here to Afghanistan or they are just before I come home again.
I may make a summer one but not letting on when I am home this time :tumbleweed:

Hi, whereabouts is this going to be?
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: Flyboysee on December 04, 2013, 12:36:51 AM
Hi Guys

Firstly, a BIG congratulations to everyone involved in this thread so early in the game : not a single person bitched about the price of this one :)

The last two questions are important ones;

1. Simon: 'What if it's a complete wash out?'

As always, we are guaranteed flying weather in that if it's forecast for rain, we can move our dates either forward or later (as long as we don't clash with the cricket fixtures, which will be posted in early January). If we commit then i'd say 72 hour notice to pull out is in order, so that someone else can get your slot if your plans change and catering orders can be adjusted. That said, I think it's fair then that whatever you paid will be refunded happily as we are only charged for flyers, but since there's a T-shirt involved which has to be ordered, it would be fair to refund less the T-shirt portion and have that posted to you.

2. Captain Birdseye : 'Where is this going to be?'[/i

The venue is The Playing Fields, Great Haseley, Oxfordshire. Look up the post code OX44 and the Playing Fields can be seen next to the Church and Manor House in Great Haseley.

Latitude : 51.7
Longitude : -1.0667

3. ElectricMick: Will there be flying slots on the day?

I think Yes, almost definitely from experience. Just need to work out the details and a rota. Being a 2.4 video man myself I need clean slots to fly

Rich is alive and kicking, and I'm sure will be along to update this thread soon.  Some real-life stuff is taking up all his time/energy at the moment, so the first thought is that this scales back to the "normal" meet.  £10 each for the ground, bring your own food if you want to eat etc etc.  Other things will of course remain intact, the wonderful little speed contest, whiteboard to say who flies when.

No caravans onsite BTW, I don't know if there might be a designated site nearby ?
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: Western on February 05, 2014, 11:25:58 AM
Guessed he was busy. Would still like a tee shirt though.
How about a bursting balloons competition. Get one of those small party balloon cylinders, string tied to some weights and see if we can burst them flying under the googles?
Cheers, Mark

Hi All

Apologies, life has truly gotten in the way of my FPV and Mad Dogs. Worse still, I have some incredibly important 'life stuff' taking place on the Monday and Tuesday after the meet, so it's incredibly bad timing for me and I will need at least Sunday to prepare. A lot depends on this.

I reckon we then scale this back as Wayne says to a normal meet, and we defer the t shirts and mega camp out and feast to a later meet, when hopefully my life will be back to lamron!

Please don't pay into PayPal just yet - I will update later.

Take care and see you at MD!

Richard

I don't mind changing the date either. Do important stuff first. After all I think it's going to be more fun if everyone (especially organizer!) is relaxed and all.
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: CurryKitten on March 05, 2014, 12:27:25 PM
Richard just called me to say that he should be ok, and fairly sorted for the 26th April, but would like to scale it back as previously suggested to a single day Saturday event.

So this is a case of £10 to fly, we'll have the club house for electricity/kitchen/toilets.  There is a BBQ available, but bring your own food if you want to use it.

We'll be running a whiteboard to organise flying slots more fairly, and we'll still of course have a distance and fastest lap contest.

Please confirm if you want to attend, but places are limited.... and at this point I'd forgotten to check with him how many, but we normally say something like 10, but end up with a hard cut off at around 15

No no no no no.

We dont want any Silly pink dolls at this function.  Especially if their is South African boerewors in the mix.

What we want is a BRAAI!!

Don't see the difference?

Then spend five minutes watching this video and all will become clear.

Can I book a place on your video distribution board - I really enjoyed tagging along on that last one you did - despite the quite annoying interference you got almost all the way back.

It's also a good time to talk about the "Flight board", and ask for any feedback.  With previous meets, generally most people get do do a reasonable number of flights, but on occasion a few people got "locked out" waiting for a fly when someone else would nip in a fly.  I should point out it's never an on purpose thing - most often it's difficult to check amongst 10+ other people all sat around talking or fiddling about what they are doing.  So we cam up with the idea of a flight board.  Here's how it works.

We have a whiteboard it will have numbers 1 - 14 on it, your name goes against a number, an arrow will point to the person who's turn it currently is to fly, a bit like this -

1. Flyboysee
2. Currykitten                 <---
3. Krikey
4. Marcin_GUmer
5. DaveyLC

Look, it's my turn :)  When I land it's krikeys turn.  Now we haven't really set a time limit on flights, as generally people fly for around 20-30 minutes (in reality it's often more like 10-15 minutes) which seems quite reasonable, so the general rule of thumb is be ready to go and try and setup, launch and land within 30 minutes.  If you are intending to go off on an epic 2 hour journey then arrange things up front.

Ok, so what about flying awesome chases and things I hear you ask.  So if it's your slot, then you can invite 1 or maybe 2 of your buddies to go with you.  But here's the thing, to make it as fair as possible nobody can fly in 2 consecutive slots - again, make sure you are all ready to go at the beginning of your slot.

So in my slot, I could ask DaveyLC to fly with me, but I couldn't ask Krikey, as he's up next, and similarly krikey couldn't ask me in his slot as I've just flown.  So if you do have people you'd like to fly with together a few times (Ratty and Dave spring to mind) then space yourselves out down the list so you are able to do so in each others flights.

At this point I feel like I'm writing the terms and conditions to some dodgy investment... remember people investments can go down as well as up.  Some common sense stuff, you slot is coming up and you aren't ready (you've smashed your plane into a bench/field/my tripod etc and you are fixing it) just ask if someone wants to switch places, or skip your go (you'll come around again).  But if you want to switch, let someone know with more than a minute or two to go, so they can be ready.

Obvious stuff, but incidents do happen - please don't switch on radios and/or VTX's until it's your slot, else risk someone screaming about only being able to see someones foot.

This isn't intended to be a list of restrictions - just a way of making sure everyone has a fair opportunity to fly.  Most of the time it's absolutely fine, so I hope this doesn't spoil anyones vibe.  As it's a test idea, it's subject to change, and is intended to be flexible.

If everyone is on for the race (I hope so :)) we'll reserve a time for running that using the new slightly longer course so noone is confused about where the turn back into the field is.

Rich - feel free to chime in, this is all as discussed, but there's a fair chance you were drunk when we last talked about it.

I'm all for slots but I think if a group decide they want to fly with each other and group their slots,  let them crack on :D

The idea behind this was to avoid any monopolization of slots.  So worst case scenario a group of 4 decide they want to all fly together, and each of them has a consecutive slot, then the same 4 people could fly exclusively through all those slots and cut everyone else out for maybe an hour or two.  The reality is very unlikely to happen - it's bad enough getting 3 people up together isn't it.

Like I said, we can happily switch the rules around, so if everyone (or at least most people) think it's all ok for people to fly in consecutive slots if they are flying with others, then cool - we'll do it.
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: krikey on March 24, 2014, 04:04:46 PM
I think the likelihood of organising fellow flyers that have a slot directly after is going to be awkward, perhaps its enough to just say "please think of your fellow pilots" Im not sure what detriment there would be to other slots if we all decided to fly with Dave in his slot, other than a huge amount of fake snow and falling electrical components. This would of course result in more slots opening up later.

Sure some people might get more flying than others but that's not unfair, as long as people have booked their slots, they could always approach other pilots and ask to fly with them.

Lets go with the whiteboard idea and the booked pilot has the final say so as to who flies with him. I think that 30 minute slots is a good idea as it allows all the pilots in the slot to figure out frequencies etc. and still gives a good 15-20 min flight time.

I'll dust off the whiteboard and bring out the dry markers.

There is a possibility that I may be in the middle of a house move so may not be able to make it (boo) but I'll arrange for the "whiteboard of truth" to be delivered safely to CurryKitten for the day if needs be.

I'm not suggesting people just dive in to other peoples slots (oo that sounds saucy).

But there maybe a gentlemen's agreement between some of us, I know I have no problems flying with other Immersion 5.8 users as long as they aren't on channel 3 :)

Could we add vtx and rc freqs used by each pilot (just for info rather than slot planning.)
It would just be nice to see at a glance what is being used.

Agreed, was just about to suggest that.   ^^^^

Would also make it easy to look who is flying and what is being used.

I fly on EZUHF and us immersion 5.8 ch 5.   ;D

The person who's slot it is controls who else is allowed to switch on as well.  You can fly around if given the ok by whoever and visa versa (as long as you are not on consecutive slots (unless we change that - but it stands at the moment).  But arrange it up front, rather than saying "can I switch on and see what happens" to someone already flying.  Channel separation doesn't mean that much if you are 20m away and the other guy is 2km away.

The weather will hopefully be good and to be fair, we've had a mix over the past meets - but usually okay-ish innit?

I can do a vid today - will chat to Wayne and find out what's needed. I will have a Penguin and Tricopter. I doubt I'll have the Skyfun ready co's work is hectic but looking v v fwd to the meet.

Ciao!

I've just pulled a load of old rack mount servers out at work so have loads of power supplies that can be frigged to put out 12v at around 40a. I've got a mod using two brushless fans and a plastic box from hobby craft which makes a pretty neat high current PSU for LiPO chargers.

I wouldn't be bothered to post them out as they are heavy but if anyone going to MD6 wants one PM me and I'll bring some with me.

This is what I'm talking about:

Jeebaz! I just searched Mad Dogs FPV on Youtube and found around 40 videos from our various meets and they are really EXCELLENT. Just watched Ratty's MD5 and busy with Davey's MD4 highlights... very enjoyable and now only 38 to go :) 37, seen Currykitten's Mad Dogs 5 FPV Meet vid... great! And - I've never seen it before??? WTF?

I have just started this thread in videos section http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,19268.msg156041.html#msg156041 (http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,19268.msg156041.html#msg156041)
Please serve up your Mad Dogs compilations there so I don't miss them anymore :)

Perhaps we should have a best video competition to help keep the standard as high as it is. Putting 'Mad Dogs FPV' in the title is a must also so that someone like me trolling the webz for entertainment can find them all in one place.

I'm getting pretty well stoked now - bring it on!

Yeah for sure! As I understand it will be Skywalker and Penguin, you on 1.3 and me on 2.4 video, both on Dragon Link, me v1 and you v2. That sounds very compatible to me. Have you flown next to 2.4 video before?

Since Richard has been stressing about 5.8 having issues with the race course, I did some laps - and as everyone who flies 5.8 knows, when you hit static, fly through and it'll come back.

The worse bit is actually flying on through the twin trees as there's more blockages there, the tree's by the lake are actually not so blocked, I came through there in later laps at around 15m (Richard did 10m on 2.4) and it was fine.

Haha, not sure about pro.  I just got Motion 5, so I'm attempting to use it.... badly, which is why the arrow gets stuck in the top right for a while, and the text disappears a bit abruptly :)

Loved the sausages last time, they were delish but I have a sneaking suspicion that you'll end up cooking and not flying again if you provide. Get that Tri of yours working and perhaps I'll join you for a spot of Tri-on-Tri action as I'm hoping mine will be complete.

Penguin update...

Fixed all from last crash, reset IMU, got rid of ACM and NAV mode on my radio, so no more unfortunate take off's and ta-da, those wings and tail feathers I had lying around...?

Also reset all my end points and mechanical trims... She's a beaut once again. Let's see how long it lasts?

It's a beautiful day out and I'm tempted to go and fly, but will wait for the weekend I think :)

Only stress now is hoping I'll get my Duo back from Immersion RC repairman in the UK. Bloody thing was faulty out of the box and now the frustrating wait for the outcome. Repaired / Replaced / No Fault Found???

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

As of today, and as discussed, the weather is looking pretty miserable for Sarturday the 26th.

I propose we watch the forecast and decide by 10pm on Thursday night.

Can everyone please check in to see what's going on.

I for one don't want to be saddled with kg's of sausage and lots of beer :)

Hopefully the forecast will change as it has over the last few days, let's hope and see!

I find XCWeather completely useless. I know it's supposed to get its data from METARs etc but it never seems to tally up with outside the window.

I find XCWeather completely useless. I know it's supposed to get its data from METARs etc but it never seems to tally up with outside the window.

Windsock app on iPhone is awesome however. Not sure why it is different, but it's accurate for me.

I find ALL, absolutely ALL weather forecasts useless.

It surprises me that we have come so far technologically, but yet, we still can't work out what the weather is going to be like in 72 hours time!
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: Flyboysee on April 25, 2014, 02:38:19 AM
Oy, so we have a few decisions to make.

I don't particularly want to sit it out on a rainy, windy day suffering the guilt of 14 odd pilots having driven far to get here and being disappointed.

However, it's not called Mad Dogs for nothing. Many of us have flown in real shite, sleet and snow with little complaint, but let's be honest, since the weather has been generally good we were hoping for sunny skies at least. Good weather means good video.

So here are the options. We all report back here on Friday and give our forecasts and ideas etc. and then make a decision. It has to be early enough that if it's a go, I can get to the South African shop and collect some boerie.

We can go a couple of ways.

1. We cancel the meet and reschedule for a few weeks time in a better weather window, and those who want to come anyway can come on a gamble, but we forget the barbie and club house... just fly at the field and pee in the bushes.

2. We move to Sunday, but still the weather looks a bit crap doesn't it? Like the same.

3.Okay that's it, I'm out of ideas.

Personally for me, I'm in the middle of some really huge life stuff, so Saturday for me was suposed to be relaxed, non stressed etc, that's why it's cook your own etc. I don't mind moving it on to a better weather window, in fact if I think about it, that's probably the most sensible idea. If that's the case then I think we should set the date quickly and for soon-ish.

The choice then for each of you is whether you want a refund or keep it in MD Bank PLC and then you're paid up for the new date, with same arrangements for food. I think if that's the case each person should send me a PM saying what they would prefer and I'll handle it straight away.

Over to you guys for ideas.

Richard

I'm usually pretty happy to fly in anything, but we do seem to have (at the moment at least) the annoyance of both rain *and* wind

BBC -

Metcheck -

There is s small window of supposedly no rain for a few hours, with quite a lot of hours of maybe showers, maybe ok - but with pretty gusty conditions all day.

Sensible head on says postpone, though I absolutely love these get-togethers, so that's a tough pill to swallow.  Interested to know what others think - are we just going with a majority decision at the end of the day ?
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: krikey on April 25, 2014, 09:42:19 AM
My optimistic head is looking at all the suns (albeit poking from behind rainclouds) and thinking that there will be opportunities to fly in between showers.

The winds not too bad, I think we've flown in worse.

However I think we should postpone, waiting for more clement weather as there will be quite a few of us clammering for a flying spot in between showers.

My vote it to postpone, what do others say?

Have you been speaking with my pjysician or butcher? :)

It seems the response is unanimous then. What a bloody shame, I was looking forwar to this!

Add that I have just received a call from Dave Pickett, the groundsman manager guy who advised against it, by saying, no, you can't fly!

He has offered us the 10th of May as an alternative. The weekend before that, which is next weekend is taken up by cricket, so the 10th is what's offered, with the usual option for Sunday as a back up against weather.

So then, can that be the new working date and everyone starts again?

I can handle wind, but electronics are not completely rain proof yet.

I can make it any weekend. 10th is OK.

This day has depressed me.  After what seems like the very sensible idea to postpone, I've suffered a 3 minute shower, but other than that it's been sunny.  Windy, yes, but sunny.

Next time, we'll just go ahead, and cope with the conditions we're given

Its been raining on and off all day here, with some pretty heavy showers. Pretty gusty too,

I thought that's what we always did!
Still, it was better for me it was canned in the end. It was a lot harder getting off a 13 hour flight at 0530h to head straight to MD via home than I thought it was going to be!
My dates are further up the thread.
Rich, how about you start a list of proposed days and those with paid flying slots can tell you there availability for each date. The date with the most wins?

Yes, Saturday turned out ok (sort of) although it was windy. I think we made the right decision this time around, however, I think that the next event should be set and not moved, unless Great Haseley has a seismic fault or a Volcanic eruption, the show must go on.

Heres a link to a Doodle poll requesting which days are good in May for us all next, you can tick as many as you like so this should give us an indication as to what days we can do.

Please can you put your forum name on there too.

Hi Chaps, Updated my availability.

Shame the weather was so poor but rather fortuitous for me as I had a bit of an emergency at home on Friday night and would have been a bloody effort to get everything ready for the Saturday.

Looking forward to some decent weather hopefully :) Flying in the rain just doesn't do it for me any more, though I did used to do it with my battered old wing but that has since retired and the only flyable stuff I've got now is far too nice to be rained on :)

He probably won't be there that early, given that Rich called me today and talked about leaving me a key to open up while he picked up the beers and SA food stuff.  I'm aiming to get there fort around 8.30am though.

Seems like a good time to pass on a few requests from the cricket club management.  They are worried that the rain has made the field very soft, so we'll have to park cars in the car park and walk gear over to the club house... so no driving up to the club house to drop your stuff off.

Again, because of the mud - shoes off inside the club house policy please.... so remember clean socks people :)

Hopefully this won't put too much of a restriction on people - if anyone needs a hand with their gear, just shout, they'll hopefully be plenty of helping hands around.

Morning!

In case you don't know where it is use this post code to get you to the village of Great Haseley OX44 7JR and then look for the Playing Fields behind the church.

I'm not really sure who's coming and who's not, so anybody wants to come just pitch up - there have been a few people who have dropped out, so should be spaces to fly comfortably for one or two more.

Great to see so many planes in the air doing laps around the field. Looking forward to seeing everyone's footage.

Awesome flying - gotta be the best meet in terms of getting so many people up all flying.

Quick preview of an incident... this was 100% iPeels fault, and he will be hearing from my legal team in due course ;)

Menace to society (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1qyC3jwcmg#)

We both managed to fly on from this incident for another 10 minutes before landing (he made a big prop slice on my Bixlers nose).  Despite surviving this, we then both managed to crash without being near each other on a subsequent flight when my radio ran out of battery and my Bix performed a text book return to tree, and he had a lipo partially fall out and take his Falcon down

I have no idea where you were! We must have been flying one above another for some time, according to my DVR footage:

FPV insanity - Mad Dogs 6 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jdrqjC7z-0#)

9:00 is where it happens, I thought I got torque roll by having a Bixler stuck on my prop, turns out by your video I properly clunked you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jdrqjC7z-0&t=540s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jdrqjC7z-0&t=540s)

Also, from about 7:30 the sheer madness ensues, All of us up in the air and a near miss with the Tri just before some ridiculously fast wing shoots overhead!

If anyone on the day missed the results of the speed contest -

So Brucey retains his title as speed king, but was pushed very closely my iPeel who lost time by flying in the wrong direction on his second lap.  Commiseration's to Jordon who was on a real flyer before his radio completely lost it and he must have lost about 10 second trying to wrestle it back... what was that 35/72mhz or something ?  And my personal thanks to krikey for entering his AXN so I didn't quite come last this year... although I pretty much killed a lipo in the process and my motor came back about as hot as the surface of the sun.

Not many entrees in the range contest (or not many that wanted to talk about it :)) Special note must go to Simon who did 3km on a DJI Phantom !  I thought that stock radio was only good for about a third of that distance.  So an easy win for iPeel (unless Dogzilla went further, but forgot to mention it).

Like everyone on the day, I have soooo much footage to go through, the videos could take a while to come... what do you choose when there were so many planes in the sky at once

A thoroughly fantastic day once again. Thanks to Richard for organising the event and a special thank you to Gt. Haseley for their support and use of the cricket field.

We had a few spectators on the day who were intrigued and flew passenger with some pilots which was great!

By far the most fun I had was weaving in and out of the bushes either chasing or being chased by two or three other pilots. I have less video than I'd like but have a great sequence of two wings and a Tri in formation flying circuits.

Props go to Dogzilla for his flight which the footage looked magical, even on a small screen.

So we didn't quite get the frequency board thing working and there were some confusions about when to turn on; at one stage I was 50m up carrying out a 45 degree turn and then had a lovely image of grass and Daisys which was a little worrying.

I believe we all had a few flights. I got about 4 plus the time trial so please let me know if you felt a little left out and we will try the booking slot whiteboard system again next time.

Guys, this was the best MD ever so far IMO. I guauge that on how far we've all come with our flying and set ups and the amazing quality of footage. The amount of planes in the sky at one time was staggeringly awesome! A few crashes was inevitable :)

My crash as usual was avoidable.

I was kinda busy with Holly, so didn't do a great deal of flying, but it's really nice to see my plane in the chase videos, so that kinda puts me there! I will put a vid together shortly.

Thanks to everyone for coming and making it such a great day. It was amazing flying with and beside you all!

Thanks to Wayne and Neil for organising the speed trials and staying late as usual and helping with the clean up. Dogzilla especially with this who did all of the dishes - not the nicest job, really appreciated!

So the sun sets on another great MD event and it's that time to choose the next date. A summer meet is on the cards. I will chat to Dave Pickett and see when the cricketers have the weekend off in August.

I am going to make sure I subscribe to everyone who posts videos and throw likes on their channels.

Thanks to everyone formaking it such a memorable day and well done on the great vids so far!

See you at the next one.

Richard

I found this on thingiverse which I could print up on a base:

A day late on the video for me - apologies.  I make absolutely no apologies for the awful music chosen, it was more of an obvious message of what we were doing rather than an actual choice

Mad Dogs 6: FPV meet in Oxfordshire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT0y2uqZC38#ws)

I pushed to get some interesting clips into a short video, but there was a flight where I was following Brucey around where I hadn't really seen before as I was busy concentrating just on his plane at the time - and I really like the video from.  I wondered it everyone else (I think krikey and iPeel were behind me) has ground recording from it, I'm interested to know how it looks from all angles... plus I also wanted to know how close you guys got when I heard lots of "Whoa", "Arrrggh", "Look out" and other assorted shouting.

Cheers Martin - one thing I noticed though is that for almost every landing I watched back there was also an "voooom" noise as you Tri went over.  You must have caught just about every flight out there - so looking forward to yours !

Quote from: aitchi now need to add a wing or small fast plane to join in on this sort of stuff.

Hope you can make the next one, any plane will do.  My Bixler 2 is as slow as you like, but happily the 100mph 4s monsters in front can also fly pretty sedately as well.  Join the carnage :)

Quote from: GavLiked the multiplayer name tags too hehehe.

I'm so stupid with the "I wonder how hard it will be to do this" ideas.  Answer is not that hard, but moving titles around every keyframe is more time consuming than I had thought.  And this was the quick and dirty approach just using FCP, would have been much neater to animate and motion track properly in Motion or After Effects... but extra time to learn how to do that as well.

I did want to ask you with caravan site you'd originally booked, as my wife wants to make a caravan weekend of the next one

Hey Mark, sorry man, but the Saturday was long ago voted as the best day for a number of reasons ;

1. We can then fly the Sunday if the Saturday is a wash out
2. Flying on Saturday gives everyone the chance to recover on the Sunday, mow the lawn etc. and do chores to make up for leaving town on the Saturday etc.

Is there no way with so much advance warning you could put in a days leave?

If not, and the weather will probably be good, we could always make the Sunday available to anyone who wants to come down for a 2nd day. That could work, but not sure of the turn out cos everybody, except me, has a fair way to travel.

Working both dates ffs
That mean because the dates were wrong, I've missed md6 bounce 14 and now the md7 meet, I'm gonna just retire I think

Nope Simon, please don't retire! I'm tempted to change the dates just to get you on board, but then people will complain that this is nepotism at play and that there's some kind of Welsh conspiracy to take over the world and I'll get it in the ear no doubt.

Fark!!! Is there nothing you can do, like take a doctor's note from me, together with Westy so that you can make it to a meet FFS???

Hype, it's a science and we're all victim to it :)

Martin, we all know that you could easily replace the Swede on Flite Test, and so, we are eagerly anticipating your awesome video :)

Thanks for the opportunity to fly so much, I managed to capture some great memories from a special day.
Its a bit longer then usual but I wanted to include as much as possible from the best FPV meet I've ever been to.

Well, we could get high :)

Martin firstly well done on an excellent video - captured the whole thing really well in your usual pro style!

I think what made it so good was the weather, and that many of us have flown together before and since we all get better every year, at least the progression in flying and building is inevitable.

Add to that a bunch of lads who are friendly, funny, imaginative and considerate and there you have it I reckon. I've been to meets where a lot of chaps are strangers and there's that 'visiting' feel to it - not with us cos we do it as much as possible, and pretty friendly to first timers at the meet.

I also think the numbers and spread of frequencies is perfect. There were a few incidents of 'daisy still life's' but no serious jamming issues. This is quite unusual at meets.

So how do we top it?

Trophies for speed trials, a multi obstacle race, long range challenge and topless waitresses :)

And very definitely, the Mad Dogs Oscars - best video competition!

some amazing videos and looked like a great weekend.  I was planning to pop down on one of the days but due to unfortunate circumstances it wouldn't have been appropriate to come.

shame as I was so close by... I did pop upstairs and hang out a window whilst flicking thru the channels on my goggles and got a few glimpses of what looked like the nose of an AXN thru the static!

looks like a great experience flying with so many people at one time!! waynes video made me laugh a few times and some real near misses! what kind of seperation did you all have to achieve that?

Great video Martin. I keep watching it :)

As for votes and spaces, could we cater for more people but have our frequency and booking board this time? I think the sweet spot for an informal meet is probably about 12-15 isn't it. I guess it depends on a few things:

1. Do we want MD to get bigger?

2. Will the locals allow it?

3. Can we park many more cars there?
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: CurryKitten on June 05, 2014, 01:15:39 PM
These are good points and worth discussing further -

1. Do we want MD to get bigger?

It was quite nice not to have to use the frequency board to organise "slots" this time - much of that was being able to shout out to almost everyone, and them doing the same.  It would be nice to keep the flying spaces at the meet small so we all get to fly quite a bit.  It doesn't mean of course that we couldn't have more non-flying spots, I'd happily turn up just to watch and fly passenger

2. Will the locals allow it?

Well, they've all been nice so far, and think it's quite exciting - especially when given a pair of goggles to have a try with.  Richard can act as minister of sweet-talking-the-locals

3. Can we park many more cars there?

A more important point this.  We have a finite amount of space there, unless the cricket club wants us to allow to drive up to the clubhouse... which maybe gives another 6-8 spaces.  It can't be relied on.  Trouble is as well, that if our parking fills up, there's a very long dirt track to walk a lot of gear up, and there's not that much other parking around the village
Title: Re: Mad Dogs 6, Spring 2014
Post by: Flyboysee on June 05, 2014, 08:57:20 PM
In answer to the questions I think as follows;

1. Parking space at lower field should be good for about 30 cars, so no problem there.

2. We have never had more than 15 booking, average is 10 - 12.

3. This time with people on 2.4 and 1.3 video the possibility of more planes in the sky is now possible, so more flying for everyone.

4. If we try and squeeze many more people in, this will mean less flying per head.

5. That said, as much as there is a lot of interest in the build up generally, we always get approximately the same amount of flyers on the day, which in my mind is perfect.

What I would like to see is more community involvement and I will put up a few posters inviting villagers to come and see the village from the air. We can decide amongst ourselves who is prepared to offer these flights, and / or have an LED TV in the club house or on the verandah.

Boerewors Rolls as we did them this time worked really well I think. At £3.99 per 500g, you can't go wrong there.

I'm also working on a T shirt design and hopefully a really nice video intro for the videos from the event/s.

On the events side of things I think the Speed Trials works really well. Perhaps Wayne / Neil would like to keep a spread sheet of the times from event to event so that not only do we have a winner on the day, but there can be a Mad Dogs speed record. I am expecting some of the guys will fire up 6S systems for the next one :)

In addition, as discussed before and for the brave, a Range Comp, same as above, keep records of distances flown etc, winner on the day and a Mad Dogs overall record for ther uhm records.

Lastly, it has been previously offered by Dave P that we can fly on the Sunday as well if there is no cricket. Sadly though, the camping idea has now been completely ruled out due to insurance and H&S issues.

I will be going to Bounce and will chat to Angelos, check out his organisation of the meet and hopefully learn something new that will benefit MD

I agree, we had 12-15 people on this one and it was just right, in terms of pilots I believe for casual flying. Not to long to wait and all within earshot if you wanted to turn on. Perhaps the etiquette is simply "holler when turning on" but please do holler as there were a few instances of "feet in shot". I for one was victim on this occasion and on the last MD was the "perp" of this particular misdemeanour so if there's any one annoying thing its that :)

If the event grows then we will need a bit more organisation to allow for a fair amounts of flights each and not too much hollering.

Trophies are a great idea as best times/distances on the day and also overall, as well as personal bests. I think for instance that if flying an AXN or similar floaty style plane when stacked up against 4S wings, theres little hope of winning (although I wonder if I can get 4S out of my AXN), its still bloody good fun and a good idea to record your personal best to see if you can better it next time.

I've always said that I can provide the projector and we could hook up something in the clubhouse for passengers but I think that the logistics of that are still a ways off as we would need multiple VRXs spanning multiple frequency bands and channels. However playing back pre-recorded flights is easier on the big screen so I'll bring the projector along for the next one and we can see :)

Does anyone else have any ideas about this?

Yes - we were just on the limit of how many you could fly without too many incidents.... although I had a crunch when I got the still-life daisy pic just as I launched, and on one of my DVR recordings I can hear you screaming "turn off turn off" :)

Any more people and i think we have to bring out the "Whiteboard of doom" for a more active role.

I personally love the little contests, I think everyone should enter always - as it's not about winning (unless you're Brucey :D) it's fun to do, and it's about personal bests as well.  People with slower planes shouldn't be dissuaded from having a go.

I've been thinking about multicopter races recently and I think we can set up a really cool little course within the field using swimming woggles (noodles as they say in the US) to form some arches to fly through.  It would make a bit more of a spectator event as well.

Having a spectator screen is an awesome idea in principal, but people tend to stand around outside and chat.  How many lumens does you projector put out, I'm guessing not enough to show up on an outside screen in daytime - not sure the best way forward there

Your right CK, its not all about winning, I've just got a reputation to keep :P
I like your idea of a multi-rotor course, I would also like to keep the high speed course for fixed wing (we could have the lap board like top gear) But would also like to see a more technical course for fixed wing so its not just balls to the wall flat out.

I liked the number of people that we have coming to these, and do worry about adding more people (available channels etc). I can see why we want it to grow, and that does have its merits for sure. But its a lot to cram into one day, and that's if you have a whole day of flyable weather, we were lucky last time.

I like the idea of inviting the local community to come and see. We could add a couple of time slots during the day when we have an organised session for spectators (whether its a trip over the village, or a formation conga line, or a multi-rotor demo) just so its looks a bit more pro. But obviously still welcoming the casual passers by as we do already so well.

The projector would be great, but as CK says, it would be better if it was outside so the people watching feel closer to the flight line and so it doesn't feel like a pre-recorded flight. Have you seen the Flite Test rig (two large screens and Rx's?) We could rig Rich's van with a similar install (maybe with the projector in the van projecting against the back wall??). I don't have spare TV's, but I do have a spare VRx for the 2.4ghz band.

But after spouting all of this text on screen, the thing that makes it for me is the people that turn up and the great laugh we have when doing the simple things, Dog crashing into the fence, CK recovering his plane from a tree, Krikey landing upside down and my esc failing to see a 3s battery as 3s and not 4s!

As brucey suggest a setup like flite test would be awesome to see:
Flite Test - Epic FPV Station: http://youtu.be/a_PQYgsjB5Y

It's easy to build, cheap if people will donate loaner parts and can fashion a sun hood from foam board easy enough.

Great videos Guys looks like a briliant event. I'd love to come along to the next one if only just to watch.

One sugestion on the "'daisy still life's" incidents. Would it not be better if everyone switched on there video receiver on their chosen channel first and then if you only see noise there's a good chance that channel is free and of course if you see a picture that channel must be in use by someone currently.

It's never that simple though :) so receivers are more sensitive than others, some have more stable PLL etc. etc. :)

Yes, I quite agree that's why I said "good chance !" If someones along way out with a very sensitive patch antenna I guess you'll never know.

Is it possible to choose channels beforehand maybe, depending on what make equipment people have there's potentialy 32 channels on 5.8Ghz alone.
