Someone else doesn't like Phantoms either. The flyer deserved it though - damn stupid place to play with his toy.

For some reason the embedded video keeps crashing. Just click on the YouTube link at the bottom right to go straight to the video page.

The embed is working fine for me

I see his attitude in the replies speaks volumes, he doesn`t care what people think, he got 70,000 views in 3 days and that`s all he cares about. Youtube whore at its finest

is there anyone that actually likes phantoms apart from "pro" ahem ahem photographers?

having seen 3 of them at the northern, i can tell you they are very impressive. the big problem with them is that they are ready to go. that would be fine if it weren't for the kind of over paid dickheads that all to often buy them.

Yes - me for one.
Having flown planes and helis, I was naturally interested when multis first came along. However the heavy involvement of setting up the controllers, gains etc. ( I would have done it all wrong ) put me off. But, when the Phantom came along, I was immediately convinced this would be a great starter package for me to commence learning and modifying.

My Phantom (I) is now modded with:-
- retracting carbon fibre landing gear
- extended alum motor mounts
- 10" props
- Arris 2000 GoPro gimbal on carbon front camera hanger
- Immersion vtx hooked up to GoPro
- twin Lipos balancing gimbal
- Futaba S-bus receiver fitted to obtain 8th Channel needed for retracts

Modifying this Phantom has taught me a lot about Multis, without the 'usual' heavy repair/ replacement financial costs most people suffer. Now controllers are available that work straight-from-the-box, such as the Naze32, I now would have the confidence to build one up from a kit.
I've never crashed the Phantom - had a few 'heavy' landings yes - the only failures have been one motor (suspect I got some drilling swarf in it - but couldn't find any) and one compass module that just packed up for no reason.

Me too.
One of the other guys in the local club bought one last year when the price dropped dramatically and after watching it fly I did the same. Mine was bought specifically as a stable and easy to fly aerial photography platform and has been very reliable. I fitted it with GoPro Hero3 Black, Zenmuse 2D gimbal,  Immersion 5.8 vtx and big battery door. The thing I liked about it straight away was the easy to see lights on the arms for orientation and the status indicator on the aft side. Those things really helped build confidence in quad flying so I find flying my other quads much easier now.
Following a ditching incident (ahem) I have moved on to a Phantom 2.

last weekend i was out with a small group flying. one of them (i'm rubbish with names) had done just as you said, not yet done his bnuc-s  though. he finds the phantom great for its perpose, but a little boring to fly. he's looking into a small "fun" quad, maybe 250 size. i feel the problem is that the ease of use of the phantom will be it's undoing and we'll end up with more regulation on the back of it. it would greatly help if the "supermarkets" e.g. maplins were more pro-active about making customers aware of the regs.

Having seen the Phantom flying, my opinion of it is this:

It just works.

I don't buy the argument that someone can just go in and buy one off the shelf then bring the hobby to its knees - we're not talking an X4 here, we're talking a good few hundred quid worth of kit. Even the most stupid chav I know would fly with a bit of care if they were going to lose that amount of cash by being stupid ... so are we to say that the X4 is more dangerous to the hobby than the Phantom? Maybe! Having said that though even if they did want to fly like an idiot, the Naza does a pretty good job of giving them the ability to get out of trouble pretty easily, i.e. Atti and GPS lock with RTH.

At the Northern meet I watched people flying TeamFTP's Phantom ... I was led to believe that they were beginners, and hadn't flown before. Thanks to the Phantom I'm not actually sure how true that was because they were flying with confidence pretty damn quickly, and yes .. again, it just worked.

To me, the "just works" coupled with accessories which also just work (i.e. the gimbals, etc) ... it's a pretty damn nice platform. Sure it's not as fun to fly as a TBS Discovery but then the TBS Discovery isn't a plug and play solution, doesn't have a real gimbal (unless you pay over the odds for a Pro) and even then gets absolutely poo'ed on from a great height when it comes to battery life, unless you mod the hell out of it (long arms, bigger props, lower KV motors).

There's not much wrong with the Phantom really, it does its job and does it really well with a minimum of fuss. Not sure why that means it's a bad product?

I don't think anyone is criticising the kit... more the user it attracts.

The amount of them sat on police desks waiting to be reclaimed is impressive.

So do you now consider yourself as :

A professional photographer with a Phantom

Or

A professional aerial photographer ?

Interesting arguments. I'm of the mind that its not the kit that's to blame but the user. Of course there will be some flyaways. Of course some crashes, that's not new. Presumably fixed wing newbies have been crashing for years!

Guns are safe until they are handled by people. Cars are safe until we step into them and press pedals and buttons.

The difference is where and how people think they can fly their aircraft. For instance, I bet few new flyers consider that they could lose their finger from a spinning prop of a multirotor until they do, but a food mixer would have a warning on the blade! Common sense? Of course! But we lost common sense a while ago and have something called consumer sense, which essentially means "someone else has considered the risks so I don't need to". I wouldn't dangle a food mixer over a crowd of unsuspecting people so why should I dangle a quad?

When you put a DJI Phantom on a shelf in Tesco then its assumed (wrongly so) that its a proper toy, something to have a giggle with, even at the price they are. I would suspect that a percentage of people don't consider crashing them when they buy them, especially if they have never flown anything before thinking that good old retailer has sorted all that out for them.

Sure Tesco don't sell them (yet) but hopefully you get my point. Perhaps (and I hate to say it) it is too easy to get one and fly one irresponsibly/ignorantly and people perhaps are not made aware of their dangers as much as they are shown how much fun they can be.

The thing with the phantom is that it is not being sold as an rc toy for enthusiasts, the phantom is simply a fancy flying camera.

They are marketing them to photographers not modellers.

Coming from that base the photographer thinks of the new angle possibilities and goes for it.

There is nothing packaged with it saying about the rc aspect and to be fair they are so easy to fly that pretty much anyone can do it. Meaning there is no initial failure and then the seeking out of a club to learn how to fly it.

So the photographer has no reason to look up how to operate safely.

Common sense applies but not everyone is blessed with that.

Spot on. People to who mock the photographic ability of these things remind me of the old David Bailey/Arthur Daley advert for Olympus where the real expert had a small reasonably capable camera but an wonderful eye for composition, whilst Arthur had masses of photographic gear but not a clue ho to use it. It's horses for courses - I wouldn't use a Phantom for lot of AP work but for some jobs they are perfectly fine.

I've had an enquiry today from someone who is thinking about buying a Phantom to show some building developments who clearly knows nothing about the rules. If he'd done even a little bit of homework he'd see the problems, but at least he's asked me and you can guarantee that there are many people out there who wouldn't even try to find out. Why? because it's fun and it's looks easy and nobody wants to have their little dream spoiled.

We all know that there will be some high profile accidents or incidents in the UK with these things sooner or later, it's just a matter of time. Who knows what the outcome will be.

exactly my earlier point, cracking piece of kit (but i'd prefer another colour myself), but frequently misused, mostly due to ignorance.
