Title: an FPV is born
Post by: g.collins on July 07, 2011, 11:13:54 PM
Hi all, I now there's been a few of thes builds, so let me bore you with my build.
her is the ingredients.
first check your bank account to check that you can afford the ingredients, then prosed to the computer, and start looking for a suitable platform, I went for an old recipe mix called the Easy Star.

(http://s2.postimage.org/1mi8ygdlw/Easy_Star_kit.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1mi8ygdlw/)

it is important at this point, to decide what extra ingredients, do you want as filling, one can have fabulous results from a modest mix, haw ether if you can afford it why not go for a full rich ingredients, I went for the all singing all dancing, Fy-21AP + OSD and a WDR600 High Resolution OSD Color Camera 550 Lines SONY® Super HAD II PAL and a mix of 2.4gHz video equipment

(http://s2.postimage.org/1mikj7t2c/video_kit.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1mikj7t2c/)

the next step is to get a sharp knife and cutout a compartment that will allow access to fit the man part of the filling, it is worth thinking about this a bit, if you want a tidy look, and to make sure it doesn't loos its structural strength, it may be necessary at this point to add stiffeners to the bake before its finally closed.

(http://s2.postimage.org/1mn9817fo/cut_hatch.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1mn9817fo/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1hyfqogck/test_fit.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1hyfqogck/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1hy5tgddw/holow_out.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1hy5tgddw/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1hzegyqpw/motor_and_strengthener.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1hzegyqpw/)

sometimes  its necessary to add extras to an old recipe, if you want that little extra from your mix.

(http://s1.postimage.org/1i290a9c4/laminat_ruder.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1i290a9c4/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1i5vnqock/hing.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1i5vnqock/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1i6kgsvr8/gluw_and_tape.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1i6kgsvr8/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1i7y2xakk/aleron_servos.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1i7y2xakk/)

(http://s2.postimage.org/1n2n92gv8/reinfors_rode.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1n2n92gv8/)

(http://s2.postimage.org/1n2tv7uuc/linking_aleron.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1n2tv7uuc/)

once the extras have been taken care of one can concentrate on the mane structure by bringing the two halves together.

(http://s2.postimage.org/1n4aseyn8/ESC_and_amp_meater.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1n4aseyn8/)

when you are planing on filling with such rich ingredients, its important to make it safely packed, now one can finish of the final touches to the filling, it may look like it isn't going to fit but with the earlier details with the knife work it should all go in.

(http://s1.postimage.org/1iiu1ajlw/DSC_4444.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1iiu1ajlw/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1ijako0jo/DSC_4462.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1ijako0jo/)

Now its time for the mane topping, I fined design it on the computer first helped me before I scratch built the base for the topping, but thes can be boult pre prepared, and are perfectly adequate for the job.

(http://s4.postimage.org/deaybov8/pod_2_Copy.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/deaybov8/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1ik119kg4/P150611_10_43.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1ik119kg4/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1imnawclg/DSC_4434.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1imnawclg/)

This is then helled down, to the mane structure, a few touches hear and there and its finished

(http://s1.postimage.org/1innopzgk/DSC_4440.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1innopzgk/)

(http://s1.postimage.org/1insnc0xw/DSC_4461.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/1insnc0xw/)

of course the proof is in the pudding, And I'm hoping to have a taste soon.

thanks for all your help and advice G :)

Looks like you have it sorted :D

i,m still selling heli stuff to fund mine but will be right behind you on my build :D

Have you sealed your bits and bobs in for good when you glued your fuss together?

looks good  :)

Thanks guys, its been in the pip line for a wile, I was waiting on a dragon link RC for months then didn't use it. to be honest I got a little bored with the build, it dragged on to long, still the good bits next, as soon as I can, I will test it out, it will probably mean a trip out of London. perhaps out at DanielS neck of the woods.

I have only sealed the motor in Dizzy, everything else is accessible.

The pod worked out good Coyote, but you no what its like, it will probably change again soon, Lol, I have quite a large servo for the pan mek, over kill, but I get real paranoid that it would break when its facing sideways, and I couldn't see were to go.

all the best G :)

Awesome Pod :)
Are you using the stock motor? Have you flattened the wing tips, give better roll performance when you do.

Hi Badwolve1

It has a brushless Turnigy Aerodrive XP B2835-2700.

I have never flown one of thes birds before, so I'm going to rely on the original designers wing, I'm not looking for a 3D preforming platform Just a steady one.

Well the weather was good enuf to get out and test the EasyStar, things didn't start well when I first got to the park, I was not planing on flying FPV, I only wanted to see what it flew like so I only took the plane the remote and the GoPro, no allen key to remove the camera pod to get to the battery, I was getting a few funny looks as I wandered around looking for something to form a make do key, a coke can pull did the trick, the neked problem was the Velcro straps that holed on the wings cam of, the Velcro has a weer ed baking that the glow doesn't seem to like, something, was telling me not to do it, hell I'm not superstitious, she es only flying Line of sight, the wings are tight enough, so I went for it,
the flight went pretty smooth, and the C/G was naturally level, I didn't need to ad eny ballast or smooth thing around, I didn't switch the stable mod on, but before I flue I switched it on and mooved it around, all the controls counter acted to the movement so it appears to be working.
I was really surprised haw much power it has, it flies really well on half throttle, and when I killed the power to land it glides for ever.
I was a bit nerves using 35mhz radio agen, I put the antenna dowen and walked 30 paces, with perfect control so I presumed it was fine,  I was careful not to go to far, I will what to I'm somewhere else not so built up, and of course FPV.

Great first flight :) Slightly Dodgy take off, have you considered a wheel mod? Quite easy, just 2 60mm wheels and a Carbon  rod and a skidplate on the back.

thanks guys
I fined my mini Fox goes of to the right on tack of to, I was wondering if its got something to do with the tork from the high wing motors, it did it every time, yet ones its up its all trimmed fine, having a go pro on top of my head and trying not to hit it with the wing on tack of probably didn't help,

No its ready to go, I live in London, so I cant rely fly it hear, perhaps up on the Black heath, but there's always massive wind surfing kites flying around. I will have to what till I get out to try it, I think we need a new FPV meeting, so I can test it out, any one fancies arranging that.

I have made a slit mistake with this build, I flew it today FPV, it was pretty windy, and some times when I terned in to the wind the response was non existent, I nearly losed it twice.
The problem is the size off the ailerons, ther to small, I'm going to have to lengthen them.

To get good repose from the ez with ailerons is to have them as close to the tips as possible and a fair size. The dyhedral built into the wings means you need more effect to have the same control

thanks Coyote
Ive never flown a plane with dihedral built into the wings before. I'm going to cut the ailerons out and make them twice the size.
After flying the Mini Skywalker, which is a peach to fly, I keep thinking I should strip the Easy star out and get the Big Skywalker.
I suppose I should give this one a chan's first.

Has eny one else had problems with the ailerons on a Ease Star?
I'm beginning to wonder whether its the flex of the wings, when the wined gets under this plane, even with the glass rode in the wings, thay bend like a banana, a hinged aileron doesn't like bends, and won't work, and could burn out the servo.
I will try this mod, if its still the same, and I get it back safe, I will place a 8mm carbon tube in the wings.

All I can think of is similar to what you have already suggested.

make a slit in the wing just an inch longer either side than the aileron itself and put the rod there, rather than the whole wing. You'll want to retain the Dihedral, so having 2 seperate rods near each aileron will keep the wing directly ahead of the aileron straight, while the rest of the wing is allowed to flex as normal.

like so:

I had this problem with my scratchbuilts, I deliberately put dihedral into the wing and held it there with spars supported on the fuselage, but the perma-bent wing meant that my packing tape hinged ailerons were next to useless and would pop up or down when the servo was at full extent either side. not ideal for steady slow gradual movements.

Thanks chrisbrit81
I have to use 2 rods the wings come in 2 halves, I was thinking of the length of the rod being just over the length of the ailerons, but their pretty long.
I was more interested in if anyone else with a Ease Star had experienced this problem.
I will tape a key camera to the plan facing the ailerons and see what's going on.

The first ailerons i did were twice as wide as yours G, but had less effect than my mates who were as wide as yours but near the wing tips. His worked much more effectivly. The further out they are the more the effect. Thats why flaps are always on the inside and ailerons the tips

thanks mate.
there out as far as I dear, without interfering with the flips on the tips.
like I say, if this is no good, then I will get a Skywalker, I have a lot of extra weight in this bird, making it a bit heavy. and that's without a gopro added to the mix
This air frame will be in as a prize for the following video of the month.

Hi all,
The problem was that the wing was bending the hinge on the aileron, stopping it from working properly.
I have included a 8mm carbon tube running parallel to the aileron, I then covered with woven tape, gave it a test flight, and was amazed with the difference, its now rely responsive and a joy to fly. I'm waiting for some Clover antennas, and a nice day to jump on a train and get her out of London for a advencher
thanks to you all for your advice.
:) G
