Title: Become an FPV Pornstar on Youtube!
Post by: Flyboysee on May 29, 2012, 08:37:48 AM
Hi everyone!

Okay, so I've noticed from a lot of your channels that while you constantly upload very good videos to YT, that your view counts are generally very low.

Here's a quick way to boost viewership.

1. If you watch a vid from an FPVUK member, subscribe to the channel
2. If you make a comment on the forum, cut and paste the same comment to the YT channel and give a 'LIKE' if you think the video was good.
3. If someone subscribes to you, subscribe back.

What will happen (as you know) is that whenever the person uploads a video you'll get a notification. If you comment or 'LIKE' the vid then everyone who subscribes to you will then see that in their YT synopsis.

Last month I subscribed to a lot of FPVUK members channels and I now see a trend where the likes of Bankhead and Hairless Hippy have now been visiting some of your channels and all the thousands of people who follow them will be exposed to your vids and will thus grow your channel and you will be a famous internet rock star! Compound interest at it's best!

Just a thought... My channel only has three videos, two FPV and one LOS if you subscribe you'll see more when the new gear arrives. Chances are I'm already subscribed to you.

Great post Richard, mine are down on views because I prefer mine on vimeo and I`m not fame seeking :) Most of my videos are unlisted so not to draw attention and some are private for FPVUK members only.

One problem with attracting lots of viewers to your FPV flights is attracting the wrong type of viewer to your activities ;)

Not fame seeking Ian? It's a bit too late for that I think? :)

As far as attracting the wrong attention goes, linking would concentrate all the approved 'flying with spotter' stuff in one place - there is always Vimeo, private and 'that other forum'.

Anyway, the main reason Ive posted this is because I relish FPV videos, especially the one's coming from our talented members here on FPVUK.

Yea.. I'm not entirely sure I'd like to be someone like alishanmao getting 500 comments about how hot his wife is, or loads of newbie questions.

I mostly do videos for myself (as a log), and yea, for some people who are browsing FPV type videos, but I don't really promote them anywhere except on here (FPVUK) which works for me ... for starters,  I have a face for radio

I used to do a lot of capturing and publishing on game endings on YouTube.  It built up a little following (just over 2000 subscribers)... but that's a problem in itself.  I don't want the hassle of running several channels, so have been posting my little adventures into RC in this channel.  All I get from this is gerneal whining and complaints from people wanting to know why it's not a game ending - I guess that "Tricopter building" wasn't enough of a descriptive title, and there's half a dozen people asking if they can get "Tricopter building" on their Playstation 3

Ali Shan Mao's wife ain't hot IMHO, but I'm sure she has a wonderful personality :)

Okay I still have a chance with the evening crowd. Right, so I'm looking to link with five channels, do a little experiment over three months and report back to this thread.

Hey guys

So in 6 months I'm happy to report the following stats on my channel.

Subscribers 50
Views 4592

A healthy number of likes and the odd dislike.

Looking at the engagement most people watch more than 70% of the videos and there have been a fair number of new subscriber engagement from watching videos.

So, back to the Science of it all. I have followed a strategy of making the best videos I can, doing some unusual things like night flights and narrations etc. and engaging with subscribers. My ratio of subscribers to views seems quite off compared to some others I've seen. There are people here with say 47 subs who have had many thousands of views. Is this just a matter of time, or is there an SEO trick or two I can employ to get better view stats?

My average video (lately) gets about 20 - 40 views and up to ten likes on the first day. It stays busy for a while, maybe 7 days and usually climbs above 100. Here's an example. The Twinstar maiden flight at Mad Dogs was posted three days ago. It has 141 views, 7 likes and 16 comments. Some do better, some not as good.

Any advice on how to improve the views and engagement?

Richard

My Chief Lecturer ( you know who you are..  :-X )
Always kills our produced media, films etc.
As a way of showing us a ten minute documentary made by one of the students..
Was taken to the editing suite, at that point the lecturer took over and reduced the the same documentary 10 mins,
to just 3.00 mins.. ( to be sure, it was better, far more exciting and memorable! )

He said we have such short attention spans if we don't get the message across in 3 mins its too late and we
naturally drift off..

Just a bit of info that may help.
I produced a short promo for a company total warrior
2 day event, 8 camera men, 2 failed fpv flights, and 155gb of video footage.
Promo 2.18 total run time including titles..
Total warrior2 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5iVf1Zqrow#noexternalembed-ws)

Right, so what were you try to tell me exactly...? Is your advice for getting more subs, more views and better engagement with audience to make 3 minute videos?

I think this is less about film making and more about SEO and playing social media. As for 3 mins of attention I keep mine as short as I can, but FPV is not like advertising in that way...

Rich,

I don't think the issue is one of the quality of videos, but the content that people want to see.  As FPVers we're already a tiny niche in a niche hobby.

Look at Video Gaming, in my previous life as recorder of gameendings, the Halo 2 ending on my channel so far has over 1.7m views.  It's not great capture quality, and mainly people argue about the fact that the Legendary ending is the same as the others.

However, what I have noticed is that people tend to be drawn towards more informative things than purely lovely flights.  I've noticed little spikes in views (and most of my FPV vide generate 50 - 200 views) if it's about something - howto do, or a review or something similar.

I think one of my best videos I made was one flying 1km away in the New Forest, but a video I made where the title was "Naza FPV testing - why the sun is not your friend" and "First flights on the KK2 board" eclipse this several times over.

I'm guessing because FPV is very niche, that people like to go after information - if they are thinking of buying a quad or a KK2, then odds on they'll watch this instead of my lovely New forest video.

You've mentioned yourself, and I think we all tend to agree - that watching a narrated video is generally more interesting than some scenes of flying and music.

Incidently - I sent my OSD "review" of my Suppo OSD to Suppo - saying "look at this and tell me if there's a problem", and a new OSD popped through the door last week :D

Informative content will always get more hits than not. But you also need exposure - posting on FPVHub only will not get you many vids, you'll need to participate in other places too, perhaps the UK FPV thread on RCGroups?

Check my rubbish stats out! VERY slow growth but I've never really promoted anything,

See that spike back in July?

That was a direct result to posting a video as a RESPONSE to the FliteTest guys H-Quad video when I built my own version. Therefore, engaging with a community (and especially a high profile channel) is going to give you plenty of hits IMO.

Making a video about a new thing that's just come out will always get you a lot of hits.  People are scouring the Internet for any shred of info they can find.  I made this one about five years ago, the Multiplex Cularis had just come out, it got most of those hits in the first few months:

Multiplex Cularis On Board Video 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNjNdaof3SE#)

I suppose it's gratifying when you see a lot of hits but my ambition with all this is really just to make something I enjoy and then if other people do that's cool.

Thanks Andy, that's a very Bertrand Russel-esque take on moral philosophy and I like the quote 'Celebrity, when freed of the trappings of ego, is simply another path of service.'

I have to say this is a double edged sword for me. On the one hand I really enjoy making FPV videos and each video in itself is a reminder of a certain day and activity that I enjoyed doing etc. The more of them I have, the more fun I've had and that for me is an important metric in the life long question, "Am I happy?"

That said, I'd like to share them with others. Despite the very tongue in cheek name of this thread, my motives are probably more toward service than vanity if that makes sense? I am glad you made this point though, it's worth taking a personal inventory on our motives in life from time to time.

Rich, if I'm honest some of the best videos I've ever seen FPV-wise are the narrated ones - it brings the author closer to the audience IMO, and it just feels more interactive when done correctly, more "sharing" than showing off. It's nice to hear how other people react when, say, the picture disappears for a few seconds - you learn that its actually okay and nothing worth worrying about.

That's just one example. For me, the best videos are:

Narrated
Informative about a specific component or airframe, showing us how it works for instance (FY31AP? Naza?)
Informative about the flying area, showing us around

The worst (I say worst, but I don't mean bad) videos are the ones that I do, which is just an HD recording of flying around, with no commentary or anything ... I generally turn those off when I watch other peoples'... especially if they're longer than a few minutes.

If I'm listening to someones voice though, I'll sit and watch for 20 minutes (and subscribe!)

Thanks for that Loopdreams!

It's interesting that in the now almost 14000 views on that video, your likes are at 16 and 7 subscribers to your channel. That seems to be a very low percentage of engagement with the video? At the moment, and obviously because people who know me on the forum are inclined (but not always) to like a video my likes get a boost in the first day or so, but I've noticed a new trend on my channel that because of the forum likes (which are a bit of nepotism I suppose, but please don't stop guys :) ) that I've been getting a loose average of 3 new subscribers per video upload in the past two months. I think that is a direct result of my forum likes, and in turn people who are subbed to them see the activity, have a look a probably say, cool, I like that lemme sub.

I'm still just getting my head around this. Perhaps for my channel it's still early days and I'm relying on contacts to make contacts.

What I've got so far in feedback and while it's not an exact science, that topics that are info rich will get the most views, which is a problem for me, as I like to make little music vids of 3 - 4 minutes in general.

I'll carry on doing what I'm doing co's I enjoy it and the growth isn't bad and every now and then do something I'm good at and a subject I know really well as an info or how to vid.

Thanks!

Wayne, I consider this to be the very best advice out there, and I see now it's affirmed by others!

Brilliant about the OSD - that new one that came, was that them saying please do another review or cheers mate, here's your payment? Your temperament, voice and command of the language is seriously broadcast quality in my opinion. I hope there's more!

Very true Steve, I'm exactly the same! The narrated FPV or Info vid is definitely more engaging. That said I will try and monitor the stats and see where things spike. I now have a very good idea for a new video, but I may need to get a voice over artist - somehow a Saffa just don't fit into the English countryside :)

That makes me feel a bit better, thanks Steve! I think I would be perfect narrating funerals - I need some Red Bull to sound more animated :) People generally don't like their own voices. I put up a poll on the Narrated FPV thread and only two people said they liked the sound of their own voices. The rest were like us... don't like it. I've removed the poll...

great info guys, very helpful. im a YouTube channel newbie and never found the time before to make videos. This is all very useful. The biggest issue for me is finding video editing software that I can use as I tend to flit between Linux, osx and windows every three months or so, not out of any sadistic pleasure derived from the whole switching process itself, but because I'm always looking to find the best experience.

Let's not turn this into a flamewar on who's os is the best, but what video editing suite would you recommend and why? Hope this is not stealing the thread and if so, bounce it somewhere else :)

I use Linux exclusively. For editing software I currently use avidemux. I have also had a quick look at Pitivi but not used it much, but keen to know about other software, but only on Linux.

Linux is very poor for Video in particular, because many drivers arent supported, so video runs slowly at high resolutions, or at least that is my experience.
