Well I had and AWESOME day today out with Flynn, Spookfish and Mallettron at Mam Tor.
Had some great flights with the Zephyrs and managed to get some crazy downhill action going on.
Quite simply one of the best / if not the best days flying I have had in 21 years of RC flying!!!!! IT WAS THAT GOOD!!!
Wind was shocking though. One second it was 5 mph then other it was 20mph... great fun!!
DISCLAIMER: Although some of this stuff looks high we were near the summit of Mam Tor so AGL from the base station did NOT exceed 400ft whilst in FPV, some of the video is LOS.
FPV Flying Downhill Proximity at Mam Tor, Ritewing Zephyr Z2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=550Zz-tRXCA#ws)
That was cool, loved the summit ascent with all the folks at the top :)
The Z'ds sounded awesome with the scream of the motors bouncing around off the hills... Sounded like an F1 grid!!
Was pretty special flying down the hill. Heart was thumping!!!
Nice Dude!
We'll be down tomorrow for some more hardcore wild Zeph II action!
Spooky and Flyn
What a great place to Fpv! You can buzz the peaks & skim the valley totally legally, amazing!
Going back for some more!
What a place!
Totally Stunning place to fly!
Loved it
WE ARE GOING BACK FOR MORE TODAY!!!!!
Pop along if you are local ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
That said im in Doncaster and cant see the end of the street for fog.....hmmmmmmm :o

Typical Working :(
Very nice man I wanna come along with my z next time
Whoever took that trolley along for transporting the kit is a genius .. :D
You guys should be above the fog tbh, but take care - hills suck in fog
That's my trolley that :)
Yeah we were above the fog but it cleared pretty quick & we're left with sunshine a light wind & clear blue skies!
You boys are missing out big time!!!
wow i'm too jealous. stunning day, scenery, amazing. well done chaps :)
ERM.... Mam Tor has claimed a Zephyr and will not give it back!!!
Anyone have a long rope?!?!....
After a sneaky bit of wind Spookfish "landed" his Zephyr on a ridge 3/4 of the way up Mam Tor.
After going up and down the hill twice we have had to leave her there.
We have called mountain rescue in the hope they will get back to us and can help!!!
Can you spot it!??!
There is NO WAY that you can get to it without ropes.

Oh and I can't thank Spookfish and Flynn for popping up this weekend plus mallerton for coming Saturday.
This is what makes FPV great and this is what makes this forum great!!
WHAT AN AWESOME WEEKEND ;D ;D ;D

MATE YOU SIMPLY MUST COME FOR THE NEXT MEET!!!
What an awesome weekend and some beyond awesome flying. 3 Zephyrs screaming round was fantastic.... vid on the way!!
Yup I concur... an awesome weekend. Shame I lost my Z though. A fine example of why you should never ever have that "One last fight". I'm sure Flyn will post the footage from his ground station of the Zeph's last run. Apparently I clipped a rock as I turned down the face of the Tor. Oh A%$e! :dazed: :( :(
Spooky
Oh and a massive thanks to Simon (TeamFTP), Chris, and Flyn for helping me try to rescue my stricken wing. Especially Simon for trudging up to the summit twice. Apologies to Simon's wife and children for having to wait patiently while we faffed about.
Have some Karma Dudes.

Looks like an awesome weekend.... Gutted i missed out... Keep the photos and vids coming!

Looks absolutely awesome guys. Well done to be out having an awesome time!

Thanks Simon, it was amazing, & a good safe time was had by all, minus Spooky's mishap.

Mate, thanks for the Karma, sorry we couldn't help more & return your zed to you...
Hope you had a great weekend non the less & will remember it for the flying & not the crashing.
I'll have to organise another meeting I think when you're up flying again, after all my request with the met office for wall-to-wall sunshine worked out great! Good choice by Simon for the location choice BTW.
Here's the ill fated moment mate, hope it's not too painful....
Spooky's Zed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Oj2sa07MGs#)
I am shocked at how far away you seemed to be from the ground. If I had to guess I'd have thought you were a good 50 feet above the ground.
Bit worried now for my low flying progression.
Seriously hope you get it back soon.
Eh? That looked like hardware failure to me instead of you hitting something. That vid is weird! You looked way too high to strike anything.
I'm kinda with you on that one Steve. Having flown down that hill and the angle he took I think it may be odd if it collided with something..... Hmmm the mystery?!?
But then again could have done as it was an odd shape at the top.
Basically I have no idea what happened ha ha
Enjoyed that. Great fun! Makes a change from flying over ploughed fields too!
regards
Andy
Great pic of the three of you with your Zii's. Yeah that crash looked like a control glitch
Yeah was a real strange one, seeing it from the ground it looked for sure he hit a rock, as it got kicked round, I could see spooky try to roll back out but met the cliff face.
Then when watching the vid you can see zed rides the ridge quite low then turns into wind nose down & rolls into the turn fine but still loosing height & slewing in then it seems to jerk nose up & gets rolled 90° right, then Spooky reacts & in lightning time to tries to roll out.
It's a real tough one to call.
Jules, what do you feel happend after watching it back?
Could be the ground just got in the way of the radio signal? Looks like you were in a dip
regards
Andy
Yeah was a slight concaved section but we were in full view of the face all day & Simon & myself had been flying the same line all weekend!
Really odd incident, looks like it clipped something, but far too high too .............
Just thought man, maybe the repaired winglet came off above the ridge & tipped you in!?!
Maybe the 5min epoxy wasn't quite cured enough & just let go....?
That would make sense the way it threw itself over like that
Right then NEWS!!!
Spoke to a chap at www.hitchnhike.co.uk (http://www.hitchnhike.co.uk)
FREE PLUG!!! Get all your outdoor stuff from here!!!!!!!!!
He said he should be able to find someone to get it down......phew...
Will keep you posted, just emailed pics of where it is plus links to this thread.
I hope he can help out ;D
Will keep you all updated
Simon
Mate! NICE 1!!!!
Hope it comes good!
Oh fantastic news, there is now hope :)
That's awesome. Chances are very high that pikeys won't be up on the hill anyway and noone wants to carry a huge wing down those slopes
yeah fingers crossed!
Would be cool to see pics of the rescue!
On a happier note...
I have looked at the video from yesterday and it is crazy!!!!
Will get it all edited and uploaded this evening.
Some great footage of the Zd's flying close, low n fast...
mate, sweet! is there anyway you can send me a clip or two with all 3 zeds in as I've only got the view from mine chasing spooky & I'll try to do the same if you want my footage.
I will upload it to vimeo to and then you can download and use the file.
ALSO:
Spoke to a chap called Niel Sambridge.... he is off to try and get the ZED!!!!!!!! YIPEEEE!!!!
Simon you are a legend! I'd all but given up hope. I was thinking of heading back over tomorrow to see if it had shifted.
Looking at the vid it certainly looks like control a glitch and just before it went in it didn't seem to respond as it should I thought at the time it was the wind catching it. I remember thinking WTF!!! then in it all went black.

Just heard from Simon (TeamFTP)... A very kind man called Neil has rappelled down and retrieved my wing. What a star! :notworthy: Big thanks to Neil and Co and of course Simon again for sorting it! I'll be off to pick it up tomorrow.
Apparently it's missing it's left hand winglet. Funny old thing, the same one I epoxied back on hours earlier after it came adrift on a landing. Hmmmm I wonder. :+
Mate that's a cracking result, really happy for you. Well done guys, hope the damage isn't too bad and you get back in the air with it ASAP!
Simon (TeamFTP) - superhero!
That is totally awesome news mate! Well done & to all involved!!!
I'm putting together the vid from Sunday, this should be a good one, just waiting on some footage from Simon's Zed - can't wait to see us all up there!!!
I'm looking forward to seeing that. I'm gonna have to invest in a better editor so I can post my flights. No chasing on my vids though... You guys were always on my six. :flying:
Spooky
It might be bullet damage from my mini cannons on my Zephyr that caused you to crash
See there are good people in the world ready to help perfect strangers.
REAL HERO IS NEIL!!!! WHAT A STAR!!!
Yup - and look at it from his point of view.. his hobby is climbing, right?
Challenging climb, with a goal to achieve instead of a standard "summit"... what more excuse does he need to set off :)
People are great :D
Yup, my faith in mankind has truly been restored. Apparently it was pretty bad weather when they recovered it. The cloud was down to the base of the Tor. :o

Zed's dead baby... :shockedghost: Zed's dead.
Looks like I'm building a new one. She definitely ain't pretty now!

Dude....
What's the damage?
Is the gopro ok?
Bah. Least you get all of your gear back though I guess?
Yeah, the cameras are good. All the electronics look OK. Obviously everything needs a thorough testing. Lost the motor, battery's are fully discharged and the airframe is FUBAR! Still it's better than a total loss. :(

Oh dear no amount of hot glue or gorilla glue is gunna sort that!!!! Bummer dude!!
Well at least you got the bits back..
I expect to see another AWESOME build very soon to your normal beyond fantastic quality ;D
Yeah, standby for the next build. This one is gonna be much better! I've got a few ideas from the things I learned building the last one. Most notably more strength in the nose and motor mount areas. Gonna have a rethink on the bumpers/skids as these were a bit of a week point too. I'll also be running Eagle Tree gear as per Flyn's set up, looks awesome kit.
I'll try and do a build thread for this one too. So keep an eye out for that!

Yeah, get it finished and in the air. You won't be dissapointed. They are a great plane to fly both line of sight and FPV. Some say they're not strong enough. I say just don't crash it! Something I'm finding hard not to do. :goofy:

+1 to that mate, they're built to fly not crash - as are all full size aircraft (to a large extent), if it were the other way round they'd never get off the ground!
Cool man, I might put another order in for one to see what it looks like, should only be about £10-£15 or somit.

what ground station set-up are you using? pan/tilt trackers or just cloverleaf/spw?
my build has (in the box waiting for me) the irc long range vtx with a tinytelemetry for a ground station tracker.
i've also got a Ruby but waiting for the Ruby osd module to become available.

You can buy them direct from Ritewing in the states or from desireRC, plus there's a place in holland I think too.
Prob some other places too

Got mine from simon at www.desireRC.co.uk (http://www.desirerc.co.uk)
Was not "as cheap" as what you can get them from the USA but when you factor in the waiting for weeks for delivery and then the bandits in customs stinging you and add the parcelfarce charges it makes more sense to buy from the UK
Also Simon at desireRC is great.....
They are a great plane to FPV with.
i give desireRC another vote - my zed came from there.
I'll be getting my next one from Desire.

Hi Chris,
Glad you made it on Sunday mate, you got some great shots there!
I think we should get that zagi up with us next time, I know some great spots at snowdon, Helvellyn as well as a real nice little spot in the brecon beacons!
We could even try somewhere else in the peaks! Dove dale??
See i think this is for wimps who are scared of losing a finger / hand.....

Cool mate, I bet you can't wait to get cracking with the new one.
Always nice to have new toys.

Any progress on your build mate?
Don't want to hijack the thread too much, but here are a few pics of "the big girl" build so far. Went through a few iterations of battery box and FPV camera mounts until i settled on these ones.
If i get some spare time tomorrow i may gorilla the battery box and camera mounts in place and cut the rest of the holes for the Ruby boards.
I 'was' going to run both an EzOSD and Ruby but i'd need to run two current sensors; one for the EzOSD and one for the Ruby which all seemed a bit like overkill.
In the short term i was thinking about ditching the Ruby and just using EzOSD, but it looks like Ruby OSD Beta modules will be about during november, so i may decide to ditch the EzOSD instead - and just use a TinyTelemetry for the ground station tracker. The only downside to that is no EzUHF RSSI indicator unless uThere add it to Ruby functionality, which i'm sure they will at some point.
Thats looking good!!!
You will have to come out for a fly with us all when it is ready.
Yeah mate, looking like a tidy build - just make sure you set the cameras with a slight downward tilt or you'll end up with them exposing for just the sky & you won't want that! I'm sure you're already on it though. ;)
+1 on the joining us for future outings with the zeds!!!
Thought I'd post some sunny pics for the rain soaked & wind swept days this week.
