As for the next OSD... I will also recommend Cyclops Storm OSD.

Thinking about the evolution of FPV....

1 - close in, often a simple voltage indicator OSD will suffice - got it covered with Storm OSD
2 - 1-2km away plus higher altitude flying, simple GPS based OSD with "home" arrow/indicator- got it covered with Storm OSD
3 - 3km+ away, plus 1k+ altidude, at least UHF/LRS RC for safety, and at those distances it's also better to be safe with a RTH system- got it covered with Storm OSD
4 - 5km+, directional high gain antennas with either diversity or antenna tracking system - damned bloody expensive jump, if you've got literally hundreds of pounds to spend on Automatic antenna trackers, multiple receivers, diversity controllers and directional antennas... a few more quid to change your OSD to a compatible one is pocket change. Also, take into account that Skylark AAT and MFD AAT have adapters that can use the existing OSD's GPS and transmit that signal down the audio channel.

something tells me that you're no where near step 4 right now (I've barely broken into step 2 mate), so for me, the best OSD you can buy is a Storm OSD for £88 delivered that gives you autolevel/stability, RTH and a very reliable and proven OSD.

I got to see the "new" IMU based Cyclops in action on the weekend.. I'm not impressed :(

My mate has bought it for his Flying wing and you have to turn the gains down to 10% to stop the wobble and at that point the PA mode is doing sweet FA and RTH can barely fly the thing back.

I'm sure like its predecessor its more suited to more gentle flying craft like the Skywalker or a Bixler.

DaveyLC, I had a simular issue to that with my FY31AP at first. Just had to prat around with it for ages in the Zephyr. Got it working eventually. Funny thing was it was perfect in the X8?!!?.... odd. I suppose each airframe is different though and you need to set up to suit.

I've used FY gear in all sorts: EDF's, Wings, High wing gliders, 3d planes and generally the units are close to spot on out of the box (other than some pot tweaking), some times to get it perfect you need to play with the PID settings.

Although I've had the same shitty experiences as everyone else when it comes to the FY91Q :D

I love my Storm OSD, my Bix 2 got blown way off course at Mad Dogs, I thought I was directly out to the left of myself, when I'd managed to go 1km behind myself.  At this certain point behind my in a perfect line was a tree, and a church.  My video went out completely in an instant, and my FrSky module went into beep overload.  I flicked RTH and then sat there for ages (about 2 minutes.... but weeks in "I've got no video" time)  As i was about to think about where on earth I was going to go and start searching for this obviously downed model video came back as my plane appeared and started circling.

I think like most things, it's worth investing the time to setup.  On my first flights, PA was drunk and would stagger around left to right, first go of RTH it decided to go up and keep going up as it came back.  These were both fixed by ammended the gains (up I might add for the aileron to it could react quicker).  On the next flight I noticed the gyro's were a little off and I trimmed those.

For some it's great out of the box, for others it needs some work.  Point is you would test RTH, PA and everything else until you did anything where you might *need* them

Certainly the best £85 I ever spent.

That wind was a killer at Mad Dogs... I managed to drift 1.8km away totally lost! But being a complete knob-end I didn't let my plane get a good GPS fix so it though home was somewhere else  :-X

Had to put it in ACM mode, give the goggles and TX to Rich to get it back  :-[

Thanks for the replies. So with the cyclops how much soldering will I have to do to get it to work with the fat shark vtx and cmq1993x camera

Also with cyclops storm OSd do I still need a step up from 5v to 12v for camera or not and finally do I still need a balance lead connection for vtx or does it also get power from vtx

The Storm has a 12v out to power the camera - best look at the manual, it's easier to see how it goes together http://hobbywireless.com/docs/STORM%20OSD%20V1.0%20English%20Manual.pdf

You'll need to power the VTX yourself though, HobbyKing sell a little XT60 cable with a jst coming out as well (or make your own), that's seems the easiest way to me if you are doing all of it off of a flight battery

The 12v feed comes out of both sides of the video pass through on the cyclops so no need for another power loom to the VTX :)

depending on what aircraft you'll be going for I would suggest powering the Storm OSD from an independent LiPo, removes the requirement to fiddle around with LC filters etc and safeguards your video signal, should you drain your flight battery too quickly. e.g. lets say you drain your flight battery and have to ditch (or simply lose) your aircraft... if the flight battery is dead, or giving out very little voltage, then the FPV gear will not be working either... if it has it's own battery not drained by the motor/esc then the battery (depending on capacity) will be able to power your FPV gear for a fairly long period, allowing you to still see either an image of the location or perhaps gps co-ords. you can also use directional RX antennas on your vrx to triangulate the rough location.

you feed the OSD with 12v (3S LiPo), the OSD in turn feeds power to the camera AND the vtx and is now completely separate electrical circuit from the rest of the plane's power plant

Its interesting logic but I find most people just forget to change/charge the RC battery :D

To be fair your ESC should be cutting out long before the flight battery is drained to a point that it cannot sustain the RC/FPV gear.
