Quick update now I've got an osd, range is now better than my radio range, just shy of 2km out or up.

Simon can you print aerodynamic covers? teardrop shape? may try and fit the next aerial either under the wing or fus against it. 

If so I'd need another skew like before but no lead, plug straight on to the base.
I'll either fit a 90 if it's in the wing or have the vtx vertical in the fus. cover supplied unfixed.

finally is a 2.4 skew on my tx radio a good idea to improve range?
I don't know if skews on to a frsky rx are possible or even a good idea?

Hi mate, I print covers for my skews and are not too bad aerodynamic wise, if you have another design thennsend me the stl and I'll print out for you mate
The shortest skew I can do is about 25mm due to the limitation of the crimp, nowt I can do about that sorry mate
For the 2.4 skew on your radio, forget it, the skew is about 2dBi gain where as a dipole upgrade can get you 5 and I know the patch is about 8dBi so I'd go for one of them mate,

The wings on a talon are pretty thick so 25mm should be ok.
It's a couple weeks out yet so I'll figure that out and let you know what I need.

The skews are not so much for range but reliability
Quite a while back i got one of the huge FrSky aerials, but the range was rubbish.

I ranged checked in low power a mates 5db and got double the distance.
Bought one of my own, range check was even better than his but in flight it was a nightmare, far too sensitive to orentiation, and turning the transmitter a little bit wrong when it was already beeping had me loose control.
He also had the patch, less range than my stock aerial even when I was pointing at it.

The best info I can find on 2.4 and skews is here http://fpvlab.com/forums/showthread.php?2814-Antenna-change-on-FrSky-rx where better range looks to be a bonus but you loose the polarisation missmatch as you fly around.
even just skews on the RX end seems an improvement over the two coax's at 90 degrees.

Been there, tried it and it didn't work so I wouldn't and I also wouldn't mess around with a system that works for other people. Your range issues won't be due to antenna design but rather positioning of your equipment.

Yeah cactus, like Tony said I'd re visit your antenna placement and have another go, maybe upload a couple of pics for us to look at, might even be a good idea to open a new thread to help you and others

Yeah, Weston was superb! I intended on doing all 3 days but, on Friday, It was cold, overcast and I had my coat on. I only took it off for the last hour. I managed to get 2nd degree burns and sunstroke so I didn't go again. I still look like a matchstick even after a week!
