Careful what your buying mind, some uk sellers are selling the cheap Chinese efforts which aren't  worth the solder they use

Hi Simon, I'd like to buy 3x SP antenna and 1x 3-turn helical, all 5.8ghz. Please PM me with your mail and I'll send you details.
Cheers

Looking forward to my 5 turn helix - it will be great to finally get diversity going on my BP :)

Out of interest, how directional are the helicals? At shorter range I'd imagine they'd pretty much have to point directly at the aircraft, but over - say 500m - what's the spread like?

Cheers,

The helicals are a tad under 50 degree beamwidth Rory and say about 10dbi of gain
Imagine if you put a stake in the ground and had two pieces of wood 48 degrees apart nailed onto the stake then crouch down to the two pieces of wood and look between them, everything inside the wood is the helicals beam, then you get some sort of idea how wide the helicals are
Hops this helps

Ah, excellent Simon, it's wider than I thought, I was thinking more around 30º. If I'm filming at a fixed height I can just point the antenna towards the Phantom and it should stay within the beam for the duration. My glider will be a bit more difficult though, as on low lift days I tend to motor up to 500 - 1000' then soar down, although I should be able to keep it roughly pointing at it! It will jump back to the SP if it comes out the beam anyway. Ridge and coast soaring should be fine as I tend to fly in lift at the same height.

Cheers,

Hey Simon, any chance of a single 5.8ghz cloverleaf with right angle sma?

I take it all the ones you do are the same polarisation? This will be to replace one I got fro, you before that has seen a few too many crashes! :)

Looking to order some antennas but still considering which route to go, I have the skyzone goggles with two antenna and diversity, I am considering getting two 10 turn helicals and having them angled to get a decent sized beam to fly in.

Wondering if you have any idea of the degree size of the 10 turn and if you think this might be viable?

Many thanks!

bignose13

Hi Mate and welcome to the forum
A ten turn helical is about 32 degree beam width but tbh I wouldn't go down that route with skyzones
I would just stick with a normal Skew and a five turn helical, this will give you plenty of distance and more room to fly in (beam wise)
The longer helical's are more suited to trackers really,
If you watch Wayne's video of my 3 turn you'll understand more of what I'm saying, he actually picks up someone's video when they are 6K out and Wayne was using a 3 turn
Cheers

Hi Simon, sorry can't seem to PM you directly... interested in a 5.8 RHCP Helical (SMA) to pair up with my Spironet v2 clover Tx. Would that combo work ok in a diversity set up? Cheers.
