Hi Simon,

Could you help me - I'm looking for 2 skew's (I think) for use with this and I plan on building the Tx based on Steves design. I guess the Rx end will just be straight with an SMA, but I'm not entirely sure how the Tx will connect....

Cheers,

Ewan

Hi Ewan and welcome to the forum, some good advice here
Anyway, yep two skews needed, one would be a normal skew with an sma and the other to go on the vtx I would suggest a RG316 cable(which I have) and a skew but you will have to solder the ends of the cable to the corresponding tabs on the vtx, or, send the vtx to me and I'll solder it on for you
You could always solder on an sma socket onto the vtx as well and have a normal skew ( seen this done before)
Hope this helps

Cheers

Excellent, thanks for that! I think I'll probably solder on an sma connector then, means I can change the antenna easily if needed! Could I order up 2? Will send you a mail!

I realise it's a bit 'how long is a piece of string', but what sort of range should I expect from that setup with the 25mW Tx? Will be flying on my tricopter to begin with so won't be straying too far i dont imagine!

Just went onto a range calc Ewan, and you "should" get 600 meters, all things being equal, weather and global conditions tend to play a big factor though, especially with 5.8
No worries on the Skews, just let us know what sma's you need mate

Thanks a lot for the reply Simon, 600 metres will be more than enough to begin with I think! Will keep me from trying anything stupid whilst I learn! :) I'll just be using the KK2 board with no GPS, and I don't fancy losing my new GoPro in some field 1km away! :D

I've sent you an email for the order.

Can I just ask, I notice hobbyking do a set for $12 which just seems ridiculously cheap, but they specify the range as being quite wide, does this just mean they aren't tuned? Need to do more reading up in this area, have found quite a few good resources here so need to get my head in the books to properly understand this stuff!

bignose13

Not sure Ewan, could mean that the frequency is quite wide,
I bought a set of them to look at, had a chuckle to myself and threw them in the bin, worth the $12 for the laugh

Those helicals look lovely, and might be interested in one. In terms of extra range and penetration (oh misses), how do they perform with a clover leaf on the plane / quad ?

Currently I have a pair of 5.8 fatsharks with a 100mW Boscom tx/rx, on the base station and quad and they work great, but would the 5 turn helical offer any noticeable improvement ? Also I'm not sure if the Fatsharks are LH or RH polarised, will they match the helical ?

skews and helical arrived. great stuff mate :)

very well made and work perfectly on my quad.

TBH Mate if the Fatsharks are working well for you close in I'd stick with them, If you want to travel a lot further then yeah, grab yourself a Helix, even a 3 turn would greatly improve your range
They'll be RHP as well and will need to match each other

That was quick - just arrived safely in the post, along with 2 new VTX's, so fingers crossed for reasonable weather on Monday and I will put them to the test.
