HK Orange OpenLRS Rx

One thing I dont like about the HK OpenLRS rx is the upright header pins. Once you add the RC connectors they make the RX pretty bulky so I decided to replace them with right angle ones. In the process I decided to remove all the headers. I only need the Serial port and the RC connectors at the moment.

I decided to place the new headers on the other side of the PCB. There is already a crystal sticking out so it seemed the better option. I used a raised right angle header (facing inwards so the RX stays quite short) for the serial port  so the connector clears the xtal and I can still add another header for I2C under it if necesary. ( I omitted the RSSI connector currently since I only had an 8 way header)

Here is the result. Much more streamlined:


I also did similar rework for the transmitter module so it fits into my homemade Case..

Very nice i have been thinking about doing this with mine so it fits in the wing. glad to see some one has done it :)

No Problem.

Be careful when you are getting the original pins out though. ( If you look on the tx pic, you may just make out a bit of copper wire goinunder the Serial header to DTR pin. I lost the pad there. After that I had a think and this is how I then got the RX pins out.

Basically forget about the pins. You wont save them.

With some taper nose pliers grab the top of the pin on the long side. Then with a big soldering iron preferable tinned so it transfers heat, heat the pin between the pliers and the plastic. It may take several seconds to heat if you have a pin attached to ground, but dont pull it. Eventually you will see the plastic melt. The pin should soon slip out easily. With all the pins out the plastic should come away easily

Anyway avoid heating from the other side and trying to push the pin through. Thats how I popped a pad off.  :o

When done make sure you have some desolder braid and take your time mopping up.

It has been a pain trying to fit this in the wing. I have a reflow station at work so should get them out and in quite easy. I know how much a pain it is trying to do it with a iron, buggered a few pads and board my self when i been at home and been in a rush to get it done. I now luckily have the option of abusing the solder stations in my work, its a dream with jobs like this.

 :laugh:I am just lucky enough to work for a research facility that has its own UAV team and a full electronics lab (we make allot of custom electronics for sea ice research etc..), Although i work in the IT side i still get to use the electronics lab when i need and help the UAV team out when i can. We all fly after work together so its like on big family.
