When I try to edit my videos that I have recorded with my Archos in the windows 7 movie maker. It will not see it and comes up with an error.
The file is .avi.
I tried first to put it through Virtual dub, but that don't make any difference.
I then changed the extension to .wmv through  'Media converter v5'. This worked and I can now edit in movie maker.
But the quality of the vid is cr*p, and this I realise was due to changing the extension. As I viewed the vids, both before and after I converted it.
I also found that I could not edit the original via my laptop that has XP and that version of WMM.
So all you Archos owners out there, how do you do it?
Any one got any answers, advice, or suggestions?

All I can tell you is that WMM is rubbish like all Microsoft software it only works well with Microsoft formats.

While AVI is an MS format, the video/audio contained in it most likely are not.  MS were banned from distributing mpeg codecs with their software, including Windows media player and Movie maker under European fair competition rulings.

I'd suggest your best option is to get a different editor.  However as I use an expensive one (Sony Vegas which is about £80 for the home version) I'm not sure what good free ones are out there.

Virtual Dub, should allow you to edit in a fashion, if I recall correctly.

You could download a trial copy of Vegas home and see if you like it.  You might be able to get trial copies of Adobe Premier and Apple iMovie as well, but check the retail price before you get used to one of them first :)

I now wonder if I could get the needed codecs for WMM? this is something that I will go look for.
I must admit that I do like WMM as I have got used to it and it works with some of my other camera formats.

Give these a go.  Virus scan it first obviously :)  Been a while since I downloaded a codecs pack so I don't know how reputable that site is.

If your using win7 you have 2 options for wmm. There's windows movie maker that's bundled with it, and windows live movie maker which is downloadable. The live version has less features but is far superior for cropping and timing. And more to the point it's far more file format friendly than the bundled version.

Ah. I didn't know that. I will go get the live version and give it a go. Thanks.

It's my age I think. I already have WMMlive on my PC with Win 7. I have just went and found and downloaded WMM V2.6. Tried it and it saw the Archos vid no problems.
Sorted.Thanks gang.
