Hubsan x4 Micro - Suitable for an 8 year old?

So as the 'cool' uncle I wanted to get my nephew something RC related, and stumbled across ebuyer selling the Hubsan x4 micro for £22! This was too good to resist so I ordered 2 (one for me of course :P) but I'm now wondering if its not such a good idea for an 8 year old?

What do you guys think? Too dangerous / steep a learning curve to start with a 4 channel quad? The thing is tiny and supposed to be quite robust, I was thinking of adding a carbon spar in a cross setup with foam ends and sticking that to it as some kind of bumper / training setup.

Hmm. I'll maybe see how much damage I do with it before I decide. Should arrive this week some time.

My 8 year old GIRL has an F450 with Naza lite in it and is fine flying it on her own. She has a grasp of all the H&S things and is very safe. She flys it great, does circuits and loves it . She even has had a go at FPV and understands the OSD and arrows to get home.

I dare say a Hubsan X4 will be more than fine. They do zoom off out of visual range quite quick and love trees though.

Wow, thats impressive! I think I will need to just give him a proper introduction to it and try and teach him gradually. I'm just a little worried that at Christmas with all the excitement it will get smashed into a wall quickly (or worse his sisters face!).

Watching videos it does look pretty nippy, and like it could disappear fairly quickly if outside. I'm hoping I can just set the rates to minimal to begin with, and maybe even limit the throttle if thats possible on it.

The blade do cut and are like little razor blades spinning round so do be careful!!!

The protective ring as mentioned above would be a great idea.

Just to say, these arrived yesterday and I'm having a blast with mine, great fun for buzzing around the house annoying the cats and the wife! :P

Can't believe how small they are! Its great being able to get my fix in with this rotten weather, haven't flown for weeks until yesterday!

Will see how my nephew gets on, they seem quite robust anyway and with the guard he should be fine. Can't believe how much of a bargain they were for £22 though!

I got the prop guard with mine which I'm glad as soon as I take off in the garden the cat from doors down comes and sit next to the landing point waiting for it to land.

It isn't bothered about the Phantom.

I got two of these for my two daughters aged 10 and 12.
Hopefully if they get into flying I'll have another excuse to buy rc gear.
£22 is a great price  I paid thirty for mine.
