My Zephyr Build

Hello all,

Im currently building my first FPV plane, a friend of mine is also building one (Viper221w)
The plane im building is a Ritewing Zephyr II.

This is my spec/what ive got so far.
Ritewing Zephyr II
Frsky Taranis (to get)
EZUHF 2w module with diamond aerial (to get)
EZUHF 8 Channel Diversity
Spektrum A6020 Servos
Yep100 ESC
Gryphon Polaris Hyper Mini 12V Bec
Gryphon QUASAR BEC (GSR-7075 LMT)
OS 3820-1200 Brushless Motor
Pixhawk with Airspeed sensor and GPS
Minimosd running on 5v
TBS 69 Camera
MyFlyDeam Tracker
TBS Yagi
Lawmate 2.4 VTX (will mod it when it arrives)
Lawmate 2.4 VRX (done the saw filter mod)
Gopro later (will use ballast in place)

I recently purchased some battery bay and camera bay designs off the internet which I then modified and added to. This will allow me to make the choice to have the batteries in the middle and have the electronics in the bay either side or vice versa.






The picture is not very good but does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to bury the equipment away where I cannot get at it should I want to.



The only extra bit im going to be doing is I will be putting some 3Watt leds on for Nav Lights, Strobes, Beacon and Landing Lights. Ive just finished designing the 6Channel PWM 3Watt LED Driver for this so I can control them from the TX.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice it would be much appreciated.

Looks interesting... I like to bury everything away so I don't accidentally pull a wire whilst changing batteries.

Hi gti,
It was seeing spookfish's Zephyr that encouraged me to go and and get one myself.  I didn't bother with the gopro box up front ....as I don't have a gopro and I have always really like the pan and tilt on my easystar so I can look around to see where I am.  For that reason I have a mini camera on a pan servo which seems to work really well.  I followed spookfish's idea and cut a bay into the wing root either side of the batteries to hide away the rx and sbec.   

Anyway, a couple of pics of how I've squeezed things in.

Spookfish ive have a good read of your build thread before i posted up, its a cracking build and will prove handy in the next few weeks.

MarkLloyd thanks for that Mark, i dont think ill fit all my bits in the bays provided though, but its handy to see other peoples ideas.

plingboot yeah credit to you for the designs, ive ported them into auto cad and added a few bits. Im really impressed with RazerLab.

I'd definitely run the radio control rx on one wing tip and the vtx on the other.

Running the cables in is pretty straightforward and you only need to have rebates cut for the components themselves. You can run the cable making it a couple of inches too long and crimp/solder connectors on so you can easily remove the kit for maintenance or swapping into another airframe.

I'd stick the gps just off from the centre as far forward as it will go or on the wing with the ezufhf so it is as far away from all the noisy stuff as you can get it.

We will have to start our builds soon as all the gear is starting to gather dust!

One advantage of gti's pixhawk over my Fy41ap is he can run s-bus. It's going to be more of a pain running the extra wires.

Flyn you might be seeing a clone emerging of your second Z as gti really likes that design.

We plan on building the planes side by side so stay tuned for some photos soon. I am heading ove to gti's house tomorrow. We plan on making a cardboard cut out of the wing and will make up all the wiring looms on that as well as finalising layout and bench testing all the electronics.

Just a small update, we have drilled holes down both sets of wings over the weekend to carry the wires to the devices. It went well and means there is no repair to do on top of the wing, also we can remove the wiring should we need.

One thing we spotted was when I was using the carbon tube to cut the holes on my wing i was relatively easy, but on Pauls (Viper221w's) it was far harder. I suspected the foam was far denser, so i weighed my wing panels and they were about 256g each but Pauls where about 310g. That seems a hell of a difference to me. 
I know there was plus points either way but you would not expect such a variance, and would mean from the start that one wing will be at least 100g lighter even before you have touched it.

Hi all small update of where im at, ive done a fair bit since the previous update so here it is.





Ive started to cut plingboot's camera box into the front, and then will run the wiring into the plane, so everything can be tested before i laminate it and cover it.

Thanks for the reply, yeah all the spars are in. Im using the latest apm pixhawk. Ive fitted the airspeed sensor and started to double the position's and wiring.
