Well I've taken the first step and got myself some foam from hobby craft. Now I need to decide on what to build! I'm thinking a wing might be easiest..? Was looking at the instructions from ExperimentalAirlines or maybe something from fpvtrond? Alternatively something from flitetest..

If you already have the foam... fair enough... but I would have suggested buying a cheap foamie from hobbyking... most likely cost you less in the long run when you factor in all the extras you don't think of (or at least I didn't think of) when you start the ball rolling. unless you have a workshop already suitable for this kind of task.

I for one wish I'd have started on the bixler rather than playing around with scratchbuilts for a year.

Ah sorry my post is a bit misleading then. I've already got a couple of planes, first one was an AXN. Just fancied building one myself. I've not built any before so was looking for something straight forward to start off

From research so far it looks like I also need to get some pitching tape from somewhere, eBay is looking most likely at this stage

Haha auto correct, packaging tape not picking!

ah cool.

one plane I build from depron sheet once was the typhoon parkjet thing. worked very well and was really easy to fly:

Flite Test has a bunch of free plans, to go along with their very informative review and build videos.

Simple fun plane is the Bloody Wonder which they have just released a v2 of.

Full plans available, just print it with adobe in poster mode. Dead easy and flys like it's on rails

Also they have a bunch of 'power pod' designs, which allows you to make a bunch of airframes to fly off the same motor/esc/receiver.

I'm building the blunt nose versa wing from flite test at the moment, it goes together fairly easily and quickly and would be a good first build I think! Only hardish bit is getting a motor mount made I think.

Looking at the plans I'm not sure how I would go about getting them printed and then everything measured and marked out correctly?  It looks like the tiled plans might be an option, can't work out if they are A4 size, sticking them all together could be a bit of a nightmare as well.

I just print it off on A4 paper, then tape the paper together. then tape it to the foam and plot the corners onto the foam. Then I just join the dots on the foam, cut out the lines.

Download the FULL size plans and print off in POSTER mode (with adobe) and it will give you alignment crosshairs on each corner, takes a while but it works well. I then just stick it to paper with masking tape, cut the outermost edges and the inside cutouts to the line, and mark the 50% full length cuts (for folds) at both ends and the middle - saving the plans.
