FlyingWings Venturi FPV Evo

I've been lucky enough to get hold of a pre-production Flyingwings Venturi FPV Evo! This is the next generation of Venturi FPV which I'm told will be available in January. The kit looks pretty comprehensive:



The main difference from the existing Venturi FPV is the centre section, this generation has a plywood centre section with options for GoPro and Mobius for on-board footage alongside a regular board cam for FPV. In this case I've got a GoPro version. The kits will need the centre section assembling whereas the one I got hold of is already assembled. It looks pretty easy to assemble though.

Rob says that the key driver around the redesign of the central section is having the ability to move components around easily to allow the wing to be balanced up without adding extra weight:



There's space for a couple of 4S batteries, anything up to 2x4000Mah I'd say and the aluminium motor mount can be moved back and forward a bit to fine tune motor placement, the mount can be placed any way round to facilitate inboard or outboard motor configurations. There's also plenty of room for an AP and associated gubbins, I'll be fitting this one out with an MFD AP with all the trimmings so we'll see how that space takes it all. On the existing Venturi FPV it was pretty difficult to get the wings attached without skewing them so this model has little fillets which accept the wing halves to keep the wing halves symmetrical, and neatens up the wing joint:



All in all, I'm pretty excited about this build, even mocked up it looks impressive:



The wingspan is 1340mm and the plywood seems fairly light, with a single spar and a lighter foam density I'm expecting it to weigh a lot less than a Z3, a lot of the strength should come from the laminate and given the knocks my Ninja's suffered without any real damage it should stand up to a fair bit of abuse too.

Having a large centre section is an excellent idea but somewhat spoiled by that bulkhead around 2/3 way back. I presume it add strength but Could that not have a bigger hole in it? Or does it support a spar, though only hole I can see is at the back?

Rob said there's one lined up for him, but given he's the #1 team flyer he's asked for some bespoke customisations that will take a little longer; something about not wanting to use a GoPro without the case that supports 100G impacts...

Having a large centre section is an excellent idea but somewhat spoiled by that bulkhead around 2/3 way back. I presume it add strength but Could that not have a bigger hole in it? Or does it support a spar, though only hole I can see is at the back?

You mean between the battery and equipment bays? It's needed for strength I think but does have large holes that you can pass two XT60's through.

I had a very big equipment compartment in my old wing Tensor V2. Because it was so big I could get loads of different bettery sizes in, but to do that you need to be able to move them fore and aft quite a bit to balance. Looking at that bulkhead, there already seems to be support from a ply floor behind so might be possible to reduce it to a couple of fillets each side at the top with a carbon rod glued to the fillets at the top, thus opening up the whole area. The huge compartment inTensor V2 was great becuase it was unrestricted.  You could move stuff around where you wanted

I noticed on the Z3, though its quite roomy, you have various bulkheads across and that limits how you can lay stuff out and I'm sure people have struggled a bit to balance if I recall..
