Might have found a cheap source for a correx/corroflute style material.

I was walking round the local Wickes the other day and found this, it is only 2mm thick but I am going to try laminating it like ply to give either 6mm or 4mm sheet. It is only a fiver a sheet 8x4' so it is worth a punt I reckon. under half the price of foam board. might also work well for mini and micro planes as it is quite flexible in 2mm thickness so you could make ribs and stick it over like balsa sheet.

Nice Find..

I have mixed feelings about this stuff. I once worked as a labourer building a supermarket where we had to put this stuff down to protect the floor. As soon as we had got a few sheets down along came the sparkies .. and drove their cherry pickers over it.. completely f*cking it up.. Nevertheless obvioulsy someone was making money on it. We had 1000's of sheets.. We just had to keep repairing it... but that lasted 5 minutes.. durable my A**

Anyway sure looks like it has more promise as an aircraft building material  :)

Hi Andy, yes I first saw this stuff when they were refurbishing the office I work from.

I am going to build a VAS spark style plane for proximity fpv.
I'll probably use a mix of this in a laminated sheet and foam.
I think it is about time we made some mini FPV racing planks!

The stuff is very flexible in a single layer it is almost as floppy as paper.
I was a little concerned so I cut a couple of small squares about 5" and superglued them together and the result is pretty stiff, at least as stiff as a standard 4mm correx board.maybe with the extra layer it is stiffer, it will certainly do fine for anything small. and in single sheets it will make for a super tough exterior cover like belly plates for planes without wheels.
when the glue has dried I'll cut a piece of foam board to the same size and see how much more it weighs.

Cheers

Right I cut a pice of foam board to the same size and weighed them. They both come in at 9g the foam board is actually a tad heavier but my scale doesn't go smaller than whole grams.
Together they weigh 19g and individually the foam starts at 10 and then settles to 9 so id say the plastic wins.

On rigidity the foam is more rigid but it doesn't pop back into shape when flexed so depending on what you are building then each one has its merits. Foam board is 5mm thick whereas this is 4mm.

Time to design something now...

Beat you to it... Not a wing cos I'm bored of wings  :)

Wing LE some plastic tube,Wing spar either extra correx or carbon strip, with a web of correx... Fuse of Correx. Tail of Correx with perhaps a bit of 3D printing for brackets to hold it on the carbon tail boom.. Wings held on with bands..

Whats not to like  :)

EDIT: maybe Could just wrap Correx round ribs for L.E...

that looks cool. I like the v-tail idea to keep it out of harms way.

what sort of size are you thinking of?
do you have a 3d printer?

do you fancy knocking up the bits to make 2 of them? obviously I'll pay for the stuff that costs money.

we could start a pylon race series...

if you are thinking of building using this material here's a set of tutorials to help you understand how best to handle it and make the most of its qualities. I have build three models with Correx and the best tip I ever got was to make sure the scalpel blade is ultra sharp. Change blades often if you are doing a lot of cutting, either along or across the flutes. Also be aware that the lightest grades are the translucent ones. Colour adds pigment adds weight.

Both the Mugi Evo and Tea Racer are hot ships. They are small so maybe not that suitable for FPV.

the VAS spark only has something like a 30 inch fuselage, and maybe a 36" span. it has polyhedral wings to make it easier to fly I suppose the small ones are more twitchy. I am thinking mini skywalker size with a bit of robustness built and and a bigger wing chord to give better lift at slower speeds, my mini SW is a bit hot.

Oh and cheers for the link just having a look now.

Yeah, I was thinking of 1.2 meter (4 foot) cos then you can chop correx in half to get in the car... , but OTOH the FlyingWings falcon is nice to get in car at 1 M span. Too small and it'll be a bomb like MiniSkywalker can be... Too big and its a pain to move around..

I'll be interested to see how you get on with the design I think the concept looks cool

Here is a plan view. Would be 1.2 m span.

OTOH Maybe I should just start building the Thermal soarer I'm always goind on about!

Dunno whether I'll have any time to do it in reality steve.. Just got too much other stuff at the mo  :'(

I know the feels by mate I have too many irons in the fire. It is genuinely the reason I don't make any proper progress in this hobby. Instead of using the stuff I have I am never happy and constantly start new projects... The original plan was to use this board to make a z3 style nose for my mini zephyr.

Let me know if you do knock one up and I'll start a thread if I do.
Cheers Steve

Actually Now I'm wondering about the possibility of building a thermal soarer from the stuff.. I was planning to use balsa sheet on the wings , but its awfully expensive.. might be an interesting project at around 8 foot span.. make foam wings then cover them with this stuff...

Sounds cool and it conveniently comes in an 8 foot sheet as long as there isn't too much polyhedral it should be easy to do. A
