I decided to have a go a carving my own wing out of foam. I thought that EPP would be a good start but it seems really expensive from all the retailers I've tried so far.

B and Q do insulation board from EPS and it's much cheaper but is it any good?

eps crumbles, you can use it for a wing but youll need to glass it or similar to get it to stay in one piece

Im at exactly the same stage. Found a guy that used this to make a decent size wing. Looks like it might be fairly firm which would be nice. Thinking need to laminate some film or something over the top for durability. Haven't seen in the flash as yet.

Must be fairly strong as is as the flitetest guys made a EDF plane out of it which had a decent amount of detail and thin panels.

Let us know what you know about this stuff.

Carving seems to be a lot of hard work, the other option being folding 6mm depron design. I have seen on the internet 2m wing built of depron. The challenge is making it structurally sound and there is no way it would survive the type of crash we have seen in  the previous video.

I am starting to play with depron on the smaller scale the large wing is not on the agenda.

hi chaps, The blue foam that Krikey is looking at is also known as 'styrofoam' its easy to carve, sand and shape. You can get it in large sheets, perfect for hot wire cutting wing cores. I found a seller on amazon and got a sheet to play with a while back, unfortunately they have no more in stock. A google for 'styrofoam' finds lots of stuff on eBay  ;)

I've built a medium size wing with laminated depron, following this format - FPV49 V3 if you look at FPVTrond's channel or google for FPV49 there are loads of videos of it.

I scaled it down a little to fit my depron sheet and my version is about 1m span. its made from 6mm laminated sheet (as per the video) use 3m 77 spray adhesive and/or UHU POR, covered it in packing tape. Flies well I think - my first ever wing, built with a couple of quid of foam. I got the depron on eBay from these guys: kudos trading on ebay

I've bought the 'blue foam' from sellers on ebay. You can probably find sellers selling 're-cycled' foam, might be a bit scrappy on the outside but easy enough to trim that off, particularly with a diy hot wire cutter.

I also got hold of some 'pink' insulation foam which was quite good too. And then there is always polystyrene sheets from the likes of Wickes.
