Only 800m, hmm. Have you used the spectrum analyser function on the Rx to see if you have any noisy components?

No. I haven't as I really don't have a clue what I'm doing with that analyser, so I've left it be.

However.

I swapped one of the whips out for my DIY dipole (which frankly I didn't think was much cop) and popped over the field for a fly. Wow. I was shocked at the difference. Touch wood, zero dropouts. Link quality stayed good even as rssi got lower. Left it on low power and kept strong beyond 2 miles. Result. I guess the question now is whether to make a second dipole to pair.

Your not the first person to not understand the spectrum analyser function. Maybe I should do a video.....
You should really use it though, lots of kit create noise around 433 MHz, unfortunately UHF gear isn't just plug and play, SteveW go caught out recently....

Good news the dipole made such an improvement, that's what you should see, gradual decline in RSSI and constant high link quality until the RSSI gets really low and your out of range.

I run 2 dipoles, one vertical and one buried in the foam horizontal.

It has got me pondering whether to make up a second dipole, or even buy one.

The flip side is that I must be at the limit of my video by now. Im only running 5.8 and frankly I'm surprised im getting the range I am with it. The uhf should be overkill for the control, but I'd rather have spare capacity in a system than running close to a limit.

UHF is way way beyond 5.8. Really you don't need to worry.

I think the diversity thing is a bit of a con tbh. a single dipole is all you need IMO unless you plan on flying acrobatically at serious range. In all other situations a single dipole is more than enough.

Yeah this is true. diversity isn't necessary really.

Depending on what antenna you have on your video Rx, 5.8 can be pushed quite far.

Diversity rx was a couple of quid more than non diversity. So was a no brainier for me just to have a safety net.

The dipole does seem to have made quite a difference. God a VAS clover type on the vtx. Can't remember what one, mad mushroom maybe, or that might be the one on the vrx. But the video is now the limiting factor.

The Turnigy motor on my Vent just doesn't deliver in power or efficiency so I want to remove it. I've used Eflight motors in the past and found them reliable so was looking as the Power 25. Anyone used this? http://www.sloughrc.com/default.asp?WPG=SRCM_HomePage1&itemid=EFLM4025B

I'm no guru, but that looks on the small side.

What prop are you using? Might be worth trying a few different props. Can make a big difference on an electric set ups, and relatively cheap experiment.

Finally finished my build. Hardest part was remembering to pack everything for the build before we moved to Kenya. Can't pop to a model shop here!
First time using a MFD AP.



Heading back to the UK for xmas, so the maiden will have to wait.

Pushed the range a bit yesterday and was pleased to see video holding up at 4.5km. Much better than I'd expected.

Still loving the Venturi.
