Maiden and failed launches of my Falcon EVO

The maiden took place Saturday. Firstly I hit the deck twice before getting it in the air (included in the vid). I had some even worse attempts which were more like crashes (upside down etc) but the impact on the GoPro turned it off and lost the recording :(

So last night i'm looking at it and I realise that the prop is on the wrong way round! does this make a huge difference to the amount of thrust? I assume it makes quite a difference due to the scoop design when spinning the right way  :+

AP was behaving well in PA (stabalised) but RTH was losing altitude too quick when banking. I've reduced the gain and angle but forgot to test on the second flight as I was just enjoying flying.

A Reversed prop would probably lose 60 to 80% of thrust depending on the design of the prop causing cavitation.

This probably explains why I had trouble launching it! Even on 100% throttle!

Apart from the severe lack of power it flew pretty well and no bots fell off which has to be a positive :)

Haha yeah it went well for wing that was put together a bit backwards  :laugh:I did think it wasn't as quick as i expected  :laugh:

Ordered 2 4amp multistar's to upgrade from the 2.2amp I'm using now. Looking forward to trying it again with the prop on the right way  :D

is the motor a 2200kv?

I managed good flight times with a 1400kv motor and a 8x4 APC type prop on my falcon Evo.

Yeah its a 2200v with the 6x4, what flying wings label as the 'sport' power system. I'm tempted to buy a 1400v with an 8x4 and its a simple 4 screws to swap between sport and eco  :D I think the motors a pretty cheap too!

I had to add a bit of weight in the battery bay to balance the wing... I think going from the 2.2 to the 4amp battery It will balance perfectly without the weights.

She will even carry two of the 4000s and an autopilot at a bit of a push. Launching is tougher (although Im using the 1400 kv motor) and the stall speed is higher but it makes for super long flight times. Too long realy it got a bit boring so I normally fly with just 1.

I really cannot fit a second one in there, I've cut out extra space to fit my AP and my gear bay is rammed so full! But like you say, I think 4000 will give enough time for a fun flight. You must be up for a while on just the one if Blue can manage 20 mins on a 2200. What flight times are you achieving?

:laugh: :laugh: believe me i'm very human and make plenty of mistakes  :laugh: you may have missed the thread where i managed to blow up the ESC on this and shatter the prop before it even left home  :facepalm: I think I crashed it in the field 5 times and did pretty much zero damage  :P

I don't pay a lot of attention to flight times- 2 setups could potentially cover the same distance with the same battery usage with one flying for 20 mins and another slower model flying for 25-30 mins. I get bored after a while anyway and concentration starts to fade. But I know I covered at least 28km total distance with around 5000-5500mah of battery in the falcon. I think it was cruising at around 6-7A from memory but I forget in truth. Had I spent more time tuning it and tweaking it I would imagine I could have reduced the cruise current a fair amount.

I put my second multistar right at the back on top of the autopilot- it's almost on the CG here so doesn't throw it off much. The hatch still just about shuts when taped up. And I moved the esc to the very back.

If you're happy with the performance of a 4000 stick with it. I do most of the time. But if you had a real range target in mind- and based on your skywalker I suspect you may do (the falcon isn't a bashing wing) putting a second in there is an option. Over the summer I will see what sort of distance I can cover with the 2x 4000s. I reckon 40km is reasonable. What's the total range of your fully laden laden skywalker?

The only real disadvantage is the stall speed goes up a fair bit (and it's not as fun or playful)- which in turn means you don't have the option of really throttling back and enjoying the view/object you're flying around. The broad speed envelope of wings really appeals to me- but if you load the falcon up you do lose this a little.

Sounds like you just want one battery, if the second one makes it handle like a bus!
