Mutley's Drak

If a Mobius is a Focus- it's a focus designed in 2012 and released in 2013. As we have both said- it was a market leader at the time and competed with Jaguar's best offering (the GoPro, if you're still following the analogy). Only problem was, when driving into a low sun, or at sunset, the Focus broke down instantly and wouldn't drive again until full daylight. The only solution was for Focus users to drive East in the early evening- somewhat inconvenient if they wanted to go West......

Then, in early 2015, Land Rover have come along and released a new product, the land rover legend, into an unknown market, designed in late 2014 and released in late 2015 . The LandRoverLegend pisses all over the Focus- which isn't surprising given it's newer. Best of all it can drive in any direction and doesn't break down without the sun.

it still cracks me up that people are putting anything other than a GoPro on airframes as "serious" as this. But each to their own.

You said the mobius was overrated. It wasn't when it first came out - it was the best.

It wasn't the best. Never came close to the GoPro. But it was dam good VFM.

And the mobius *is* over rated. It wasn't when it first came out. But it is now- evidence of this is the fact people *still* buy them!

I didn't start the Ford Focus analogy! :D I liked the land rover legend. I can almost see it being released if a 21 year old with massive earings and skinny jeans manages to grab the reigns of the Land Rover marketing department!

I agree though. On a Drak I would use a gopro and do it full justice. It's not a bashing wing so unlikely to get smashed up. And given the price of the airframe, and the high quality components you would inevitably use to protect your very expensive airframe, a £300 gopro isn't going to increase the price of the plane by that big a %.

The Mobius V3 will stay on the Drak till the Foxeer turns up, not in any rush though.
The Drak got a dusting with Plasti-dip tonight and the wings are now covered with lam, my favourite bit of the build. yipppeeeee

Cheers Chris, Have you tried a Foxeer on the Drak yet? Was thinking of the servo switching on/off as a major plus as long as the footage was good as well.

I have the foxeer,  just have not fitted it yet. Will soon.

Yes, would be a lot quicker but have some bits stuck in customs, it's a really quick build and no drama's to slow things down.
Enjoyed this build so far, just need a Vector now, tied of being billy-no-Vector lol

Made a start on mine tonight.  job 1. putting in the little fibreglass mini spars.  Lots of Goop used, some rather nice fumes for the wind to blow away... think I might start my own thread for my build....

Hey Andy, more build the better, I've been busy on mine but my PC is a little wobbly at the mo.

Well the rain has been falling so I've been working away with the Drak, I've gone and Plastidipped the black bits I wanted painted which were the cooling intakes and the rear air disruptors, just cosmetic really. I made the choice to laminate the entire airframe, the bottom was much thicker than the upper surfaces as I was keeping a weather eye on the finished weight and this is not an easy task as the molding has some 3d curves that film does not want to fit nicely, job done but it took longer than I thought.
After this it was the waiting game for the balsa control surfaces and other bits from Ritewing, these were ordered on the 22nd January and just turned up today (Chris posted straight away but it does take a while to get it though customs etc) so I cracked on with the fun bit of lay-out and wiring.
Will make a start on the antenna's, a dipole and 3 leaf, will make a few and test for return-loss then cherry pick the best for the Drak.

Looking good that.   Did you use the brush on plastidip stuff for the black bits?  I reckon I've got another evening on mine before all the gluey bits are done, then I can think about laminating and colour schemes and stuff.

I'm not sure about laminating the fuselage, the compound curves are putting me off!

Hey andy,  I sprayed the plastidip, goes on a treat but masking just eats time though, worth it.
Laminating the fuss was a bitch and while doing it I wished I'd never started, that said now it's finished I'm pleased I did it, should last a little longer and stop hanger rash.

I wonder if some decent vinyl would give a similar level of protection to the underside of the fuselage, compared to laminate?  I'm guessing not, which is a shame, it's a lot easier to apply to compound curves!  I'm going to do the wings, so I'll see how I get on with those, before making a decision on the fuselage.

I've stuck with the EPP elevons too.  They do feel quite bendy twisty, but adding the spars has stiffened them up a bit.  Laminating them should work fine I think.

How are you testing the antennas that you are making?
