Vector - flying below the launch/home point

Hi folks,

Does anyone know if there are any issues if I were to take a plane equipped with a Vector flight controller, and fly it at an altitude that is lower than the take off point?  I'm planning some mountain bombing missions this summer, but starting from near the top of said mountain, rather than the bottom...

Cheers

I can't imagine that would be an issue, every flight controller i've seen or used just goes into minus figures for the altitude. I was at -170m couple of weeks ago using my Tornado  :D

I'm sure some Vector user will come along soon to confirm for you though.

Sometimes starting from the top of the mountain isn't as good for direct LOS between you and the aircraft as starting from the bottom and a little bit away from it.

Look forward to the vids  :D

The only risk if going into failsafe and then having it fly into the mountain.

Otherwise it doesn't stop working because you go below launch level altitude.

Yes, works perfectly fine below the launch alt. Not sure, but I think as long as it's not at home position, it should try to make rth alt before flying back.

That thought goes through my mind when I'm flying. Only way I can think of getting rount it is to set AP waypoints that firstly take it in a direction away from the mountain to a safe altitude and then back to the home location... then you would also need to set your FS to activate 'Waypoint' mode instead of 'RTH' mode.

Bit of a faff really  (?)

Edit* Not even sure if Vector has a mode like that which allows way-points that it will fly to automatically (like my Tornado does)

Be cool if you could set up "obstructions" on the SD card with radius around them .. so plot a mountain on a google map and say "avoid this circle please!" ... maybe in the next couple of years :)

According to a separate Thread running - http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,48719.msg243740/topicseen.html#new, if you are flying below your launch point altitude - when RTH is engaged "the motors will not arm."

If this is correct then you won't "fly" into "the" mountain - you will gracefully glide or stall plummet into it !!
You learn something new every day.

You need to disable the low altitude throttle cut in the safety settings. The aircraft will then use the motor to try and get to the return altitude above your home point.

If there is a mountain in he way then???????

The best crasher ever! I've had lots of practice.

motors will not arm?

is this in a multirotor then?

I fly my Vector below launch height on a regular basis (the perks of flying from the top of a small hill :) )

Never had any issues with it, but in all honestly I've never engaged RTH whilst in negative altitude so can't really say.

I'll try it for you next time I'm out :)

Is there not a simulator in the Vector GUI..?

As others have said, enable the low altitude rth setting.
