Hi, just after a bit of information on cyclops tornado osd. Can you use ppm with cyclops? I know it says s-buss but was just wondering if it could be changed. Sorry if it's a daft question

jkishan16

Should do, goes in the same port as S-BUS I believe. :)
I know the Storm takes PPM for sure.

keukpa

Yes you can. I used to use PPM on mine.

You plug the PPM cable into the BUS port on the Tornado. Then you need to set it as PPM on the OSD menu.

Thanks for that AdamG. Just another question would I need to step the voltage down if I use a 4s

FPVSteve

I use my Tornado on 4s and 3s no problems

WHOAH!

the current sensor may be able to accept a 4S LiPo, but how are you actually powering the OSD unit Steve?

I know for the Storm OSD you would NOT be able to use the "jumper" method of powering the OSD (with the jumper in place, the OSD takes it's working voltage from the LiPo connected to the current sensor) as it will release the magic smoke.

I used 4S with my Storm OSD, but I powered the OSD using the direct input method, powering it with a 3S LiPo NOT by using the jumper(or you could wire in a drop down voltage reg to get 12v)

unless the Tornado has a voltage reg built into the current sensor now so it will always drop the V down to the operating voltage of the OSD

FPVSteve

Sorry should have said - 4s flight battery connected to the current sensor to power the OSD.

Tornado can handle it, Storm can't (I believe).

thats good then

As far as I'm concerned the Tornado cannot take 4S into the main unit. The BATT port can take 12v, and then uses this to supply power to your vtx and FPV cam.

How exactly have you wired your up Steve? You must have a UBEC dropping it to 12v somewhere??

My Tornado is powered via the current sensor, using a 10000mAh 4s battery (16.8V fully charged).

I do have a separate 3s 1000mAh battery (12.6V) powering my VTX + camera directly though.

I have had a situation a few weeks ago where the 3s battery died, killing my video link - the plane still came home via RTH though because the OSD was still alive from the 4s flight battery.

I think if you use the BATT port you have to step it down but only if you're then powering a VTX:

I'm not doing that at all.

I knew you'd have a 12v source in there somewhere  ;)

They way I see it, the Tornado is actually powered by 5v from your UBEC or ESC built in UBEC. It doesn't need a 12v power source at all. The current sensor cable is actually for the Tornado to provide the chip on the sensor with 5v, not the other way around.

The BATT port is designed to provide a video voltage reading (in the bottom right of the display), and also to then pass on the 12v to the Vtx and cam through the VID IN and VID OUT ports.

Basically, DO NOT put more than 12v into the BATT port on the Tornado and all will be well :)

Steve... do you bypass the Tornado to power your video gear?

Yes :)

Yes :)

It would benefit you to plug your 3S into the BATT port as I guess you don't get a voltage reading for your 3S on the OSD display?
