is Windows 10 worth it

So my computer which is currently win 8.1 keeps prompting me to upgrade to Win10.

Why I am normally against upgrading something that is working well I am tempted.

then I read a post someone having trouble with connecting USD devices.

With the wide array of serial to USB connection for this hobby alone should I do it or am I going to open a can of worms and have nothing work ?

I upgraded from Windows7->10 using the in place upgrade process and it's about as smooth as any upgrade I've ever had.

I use my machine for quite a bit and have various USB devices and old sound cards plugged in for example and it all just worked with no messing around.

No problem connecting to my quad's via cleanflight or doing firmware upgrades etc...

So thumbs up from me.

I went from 8.1 to 10.
No problems with any USBs but I do have the problem of the 'dead taskbar'. Its quite uncommon apparently (which would explain why I have it :+) but is a total pain in arse! At seemingly random times (but very often) the taskbar will cease to function meaning none of the icons work, including the 'start' button. The only way to sort it that I'm aware of is to re-start windows explorer from task manager but this is only temporary.....

If you do the upgrade keep you fingers crossed you don't get it ;)

No problems with Windows 10 since I upgraded.

Hurry up though, the offer runs out shortly and then it's £99 for Home, £199 for Pro.

I have 8 on my desktop which is working fine ( but I have changed it so its more windows 7 looking. ) No problems with that, I did upgrade to 10 but it sucked so rolled back.

My laptop is on 10 though and seems ok.

Yes you choose while upgrading wether to just upgrade or do a full system wipe / fresh install.

You can download the windows media creation tool from microsoft which gives you various install options including fresh install. Bit of info ...

I upgraded the Toshiba laptop for 7 days and then went back to 7. The reasons where: I could not get on with the way 10 looked and worked, no files or programs seemed to be in the same placers 7 and I wanted the old desk top back with the tiles. Also the processor was probably too slow for 10. My advice is do a mirror image of your PC before upgrading because During the rollback I lost many files so had to do a clean re install of 7. Following that experience I got the tablet with 10 and android on which just confirmed to me that 10 is more like a smart phone.
One big tip I can give you is you must do a recovery disc if you have 10. The reason is if you forget or lose your password or enter it incorrectly a few times you get locked out and if you don't have a recovery cd you are effectively locked out of your machine and have to do a re install. That's what happened to the tablet.
As a result of all the above I have decided that when 7 is no longer serviced by MS I will be swapping all the home and work computers over to Macs

I'm sorry BigT but that sounds like user error to me - I mean, it's hardly Windows 10's fault that you forgot your password....

As someone who does software development work 5 days a week with some pretty resource intensive applications, I can absolutely disagree that Windows 10 is "like a smart phone" - unless of course you've put it onto a tablet or it is running in "tablet mode" .. in which case you can switch out of it by clicking "tablet mode" in the notification bar.

Windows 10 (and to a lesser extent 8.1) was designed to be more like Windows 7 than Windows 8 because of the backlash over the UI changes. Windows 10 incorporates the Windows 8 'tile screen' into the traditional (Win7) start menu and is resizable, or full-screen selectable if you really want it so you get the best of both worlds.

must say I hated win 8 when i started using it 3 years ago stepping up from XP. Couldn't find anything everything was different. After a couple of weeks of working out I love it.

In my eyes its designed to work on both Tablets and computers. I only use on laptop so once I worked out you go to the normal desktop all was good. The apps just dont work practically for a computer situation. Take up the whole screen and nothing left for anything else.

Just backed up my PC. Might be going to give it a crack I think.

Absolutely agree, user error, didn't realise I needed a recovery cd, no one told me I couldn't recover or reset the password without it, unlike 7 etc.
Indie switch it out of tablet mode but it still didn't look like all the other Windows versions I have used. Plus none of my machines had a fast enough processor, but that didn't stop MS from bombarding me with upgrade now messages that I stopped but kept coming back. Funny thing, you don't here Apple users complain very often do you? Well I don't anyway.
