Yes the "window" icon is the Windows start menu. If you are at all competent with Windows 7 you should find Windows 10 a breeze...

If anyone is like me and getting very peed off with MS insisting I download Win 10 even though their own software checker says that themachine is not capable, go to Ulimate Otsider and  use the GWX Control panel http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

Ok, so, last week I finally got to the point of losing the will to live with my trusty 10 year old PC. After many upgrades and new drives new graphics card and new ram I couldn't live with the lock ups and crashes any longer. So I opened up the piggy bank and built an new PC from scratch. On the advice of my bro in law (senior IT man for Glasgow Uni, who detests MS and Apple by the way) I took the spec from an i7 machine with 2x2TB Ssd,that would retail for about £2500 plus vat and bought the bits from Scan, case and all, from order to delivery 15 hours, from delivery to build completion 3 hours, from build completion to fully working, 48 hours and counting.
This is my first clean fresh install of Windows 10 and, guess what, it's not that bad so far.

I am getting on ok with Win10 too after getting a new laptop.

Only bug i have atm is a printing bug. It always wants to "print to file" and will never send it to the actual printer. Other than that it works pretty well and i am getting used to it.

Still keeping my editing machine on win 7 tho.  ;D

Mostly I am happy with 10 after upgrading from 8.

One little thing is I send pics from my ph to pc often using bluetooth. Before it used to just pop up and prompt to save. Now I have to manually click on the bluetooth app tell it to receive a file before I send it from my phone. Small thing just takes a couple more clicks to get the job done.

Apart from that all is working well and like the layout.

Is there any way to still get a free upgrade  from XP to ten?
I know you could a while back if you were signed up,but that has now expired.

You can get a win7 installation on eBay for about £15 ish.

Not from XP directly. 10 was to replace 7 and 8 because they were "so bad"  so if you dont have either of them you dont qualify.

Windows 7 was ace Coyote, it was Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 (both with the crap UI updates) that were widely hated.

I use Windows 10 exclusively now, the only thing that annoyed the crap out of me were the "toast popups" which got turned off immediately.

Windows 7 was certainly a step in the right direction after the disasterous Vista. Windows 8 was shocking, 8.1 less so and Windows 10 so far has been a good step.

Oddly Microsofts best OS was also almost their undoing as many people were unwilling to upgrade from XP to Vista or even 7 for the longest of times.

Interestingly enough, I probably still do the same old sh*t on my PC that I did 10 years ago, but for some reason I need a bigger, faster processor, more RAM and storage to run a much more bloated OS.

Gone are the heady days of pushing the hardware to the maximum, eeking out every last scrap of storage space from the tape drive buffer and pushing more than 8 sprites to the screen on one go. Oh and who could forget the audio developments of some of the 8 bit computers with only 3 audio channels being somehow pushed to deliver 5!!!! And the games that magically pushed graphics into that no-mans land of a screen border where no developer had ever gone before.

Bring back GEOS!

Why did Microsoft jump to Windows 10? Because 7, 8, 9! ;)

Completely agree with you there Krikey - you'll know what I'm talking about when I mention web frameworks as well, they've grown into such complex overbearing beasts that even creating a simple website nowadays is no mean feat for a beginner ... I'd hate to be just starting out right now, there's so much to remember.

Bring back the days of Notepad and an FTP client :P
