I've got an 800mw 1.3 vtx going on the talon. I've seen some have taken theirs out of the case however this acts as a heat sink for it.

I'm guessing if I did this it will be ok in flight but likely to overheat on the ground?

I've took mine out.

And placed it on the outside of the aircraft.
Mine is air-cooled haha.

It'll take a while to overheat on the ground.
But then there is usually a breeze to keep it cool.

Had mine on the talon for over a year, it's just the motors that die on me haha

Mines coming along slowly.

I printed the AP cradle out to hold my MFD AP  :

I also printed out the beefed up motor mount from Vortex, then his TriplethreatRC designed catch system. The AP is in, so is the current sensor, airspeed sensor, servos are all installed, motor and ESC are in. Hatch reinforced to stop it bending.

I also took JT's camera mount and tweaked it a bit for a GSW servo that is further back and I am going to design a holder for the live cam pan and tilt but the mobius to pan only.
Education and schoolin is good, but FPV is gooder :)

The case does act like a heatsink, but it also traps a lot of air inside (you'll see when you open it up) which also acts like an insulator, sealed in air doesn't flow lol

I took mine out and glued on my own heat sink:
Is that heat sink an eBay special?

While I like the catch system it seems a bit over engineered to me. I'll be going with tape one end to make a hinge and velcro the other  :D

I'm using the 800mw out of the case, it's just in the airflow on top and doesn't really get all that hot, I wouldn't worry about it too much  :)

BlueFlyer

I've used the 800mw for nearly 2 years now out of it's case with no heatsink, and has always been fine.

I just put the heatsink on there because I noticed how warm it got when doing testing indoors.... can't harm it I suppose

The maiden is done and dusted, chuffed as she flew better than I thought she would and much more stable than the Twinstar she is to replace. Only had one flight as the speed controller went into low power mode after overheating, tis an old controller from my heli days that's not cutting it, ordered a Turnigy Plush 30 Amp as the most I saw on my set-up was 22Amps on take-off. Needed a little bit of trim and could do with the CG moving forward a tad later on but she was like a trainer and I did up the throws cos she was a little too soft after the Z3 and Drak. Really pleased with the limited 15mins on the clock but she going to be a distance flyer the way she sips the Amps. Some pic's
After the maiden and still in one bit :overexcited:

The launch

A slow pass, very very quiet after flying wings  :o

Glad to hear it went well.my first esc had the same problem,it was an old one and wouldn't let me pull more than 5amps after about five minutes flying.
Anyway put my red brick 50 on out of the FX61 and all was good.

They really do, much more chilled flying than a wing but still very capable, can see why they are the weapon of choice for distance flying. Was going to have a blast at my pb for both fixed wing and rotor in the next few weeks so hope to get great things from the Talon.

Cheers lads, a good maiden always puts a smile on ya face  ;)
