Pagoda FPV antennas

Bruce has been sent in some Pagoda FPV antennas made by a guy called Maarten Baert.

They look more than a little interesting to me, the build of them means with a few tweaks ( if they perform as reported) that they could be made so they are virtually indestructible !

This could be a massive improvement over the relatively delicate Skew-Planar design in that the elements are actually solid PCB rather than delicate copper elements.

I can see these being the next big thing in 250 racing.

I used to check out his channel almost every day. Not any more.

I do agree with you though they do look interesting.

These antennas definitely look stronger than skews, agree that they need some foam support or something between the plates.

Saying that, my Spironet skews have seen a lot of abuse and still work really well so.. meh ... be interesting to see the numbers.

I am thinkinking something stiffer and more substantial than foam to make these really strong. The obvious choice will be a 3D printed or moulded plastic insert and shell. Then yes if they perform pretty good he will be onto something.

I was watching and wondering how easy they would be to actually make and manufacture, and cost in the end. A bit of PCB is more expensive than a bit of wire, and if you need to end up casing it in some plastic anyway then it kind of defeats the argument for them being more durable.

Bruce seemed to be more interested in the polarisation rejection, will be interesting to see the results. Wonder if they scale up for lower frequency as well, then the durability would be a big plus compared to big and easily damaged 1.2GHz skews.

Not at all, the cased Skews can only take a light hit before the casing breaks and the wires are squashed. After seeing 250 races, there were more cased Skews with the top missing then they were cased and untouched. With no top on they are then at the will of the gods with zero protection. This design though means there can be no space inside and no delicate elements so they could take some almighty hits with no damage.

If these work then it's one way to solve it I guess but if the current cases are all coming apart that easily then that really seems more like they just aren't designed well enough.  Pretty sure that it's well within the wit of man to make a cover for an aerial that would be one of the last things you'd break on a racing quad.  Especially since they're on the end of a semi flexible bit of cable.

Won't work at lower frequencies though their aerodynamic profile would be too poor.
