Wings, are they a different beast?

Just doing my homework ... Considering I can't fly an unassisted plane. How hard are wings to fly. Don't get me wrong, I'm not thinking of jumping in for a wing. I'm just curious how hard they are?

Learn on a Bixler without any fancy FC stuff.. Easiest plane to fly ever.
When you are chilled flying that, move on.

Learn to fly with-out a FC, I spend most of my time flying in manual and only use PA for distance, duration or if I want a brew when flying. You get so much more feed-back from a Z3 Spade/Drake/Z2 and when things do go sidewards you have a better perception of what's wrong, win win.
A well set-up wing is a joy to fly and WILL go where you point it and will carry on going that way till it either stalls or you point it else where ;)

The hardest part is getting the CG right - once you've gotten that done then they handle pretty much the same as a normal plane only usually quite a bit faster.

Wings are 10x harder than a Bix. The Bix will self level where a wing won't, at any distance getting your orientation mixed up is very easy with a wing, it's the same shape upright as it is inverted. It's a bad idea for someone inexperienced.

This for sure.

I love wings. But you should really master at least 1 normal plane before even attempting a wing.

A wing like a tek sumo makes a great second or third plane IMO.

Wings are just so much faster and orientation so much more difficult. They two combined makes them much harder to fly.

One of the most famous mainstream wings out there, the tbs cap, has caught literally 100s of people out. Being underpowered, and cg issues are two big factors, but the stall characteristics of a wing are far more aggressive and they don't self level. Even the very best set up wing in v low wind will need a slight adjustment or input every 10-20s to keep them level.

Going back to the original question/statement, there are a number of airframes that will help with your learning as a pilot, master a trainer in manual and then move on to a sportier airframe like a mini talon. Staying with the same type of airframe does you no favours, it helps to keep pushing your skill levels along. If at all possible try to fly with an experienced flyier, as you say your not thinking of a wing at the mo but down the road, this is in store.

I'm going to get flamed for this but I don't give a toss.

My second plane was a wing. A Flying Wings Falcon Evo.

Stuck a Vector in it and it flew great.

It's only when you want to get a bit more extreme that the Vector starts to limit you. You DO have to turn it off and actually fly it then.

Have a look at the vid again and the bottom of the dive she just starts a speed oscillation, common to all airframes but deadly if you don't see it coming. Bang in the stick time first, cuts down on the bin liners needed lol

Mark has a valid point, you can fly by just using a FC and I would recommend this if you haven't got access to an experienced flyier but it does isolate you from the real flying experience and you will need to grasp the nettle at some point. There is no right or wrong way of learning, it's just the easiest way from A to B for you and how deep are your pockets.
For me flying in PA mode is a bit like having a bath with your socks on, you can, but do you really want to lol :goofy:
