Taranis Warning "TX Antenna Problem"

Hi Guys

I bought a used taranis online and it worked fine for a week.

Its running Open Tx 2.1.9

After some perfectly normal flying yesterday it now gives me the above warning every 5 seconds. The only way to shut it up is to disable the internal tx? It hasn;t been bashed around since then?!

Any ideas chaps :s I have re-written the current firmware on the card and it hasn't changed it at all :S

Is this a firmware issue or hardware do we think :S

I think it's a known issue Billy. Not sure of the exact detail but I remember reading something about some sort of resistance issues causing issues over the long term.

There's some stuff out there but at least some of it is a firmware issue from a couple of years ago. I'm running recent firmware too :s

Does the taranis have the antenna mod done? This can cause it when the connection breaks down

It's where you remove the old antenna and put a 5di antenna and solder a new cable with sma on so you can remove the new high gain antenna

Hi Billy..

  Check the coax cable connection where it meets the PCB....It should still be glued over to keep it in place if its still original from the factory.

  If someone has been fiddling with it, that glue will be disturbed or even removed.  Check it out as using it without a proper connection could blow the RF output stage.

  The tiny connector just presses on with a click...check it out..:)

No the previous owner hasn't touched the antenna from what I can see.

I have no idea what to do now :s I may try and flash with some older firmware.

Hi,
       Which version of Firmware are you using?  There are 3 types to my knowledge:

        1. Universal (Global)
        2. EU
        3. LBT  (EU)

         Any receivers that you are using must also have matching Firmware, and the best way to ensure that is to upload to your receivers using a (modified) servo cable.
  The cable plugs into 3 of the pins in your TX Module Bay, and the other end goes in the Smart Port as I recall. This is the safest way to do it and ensures an exact match. I watched a U-Tube clip to see how its done.
  You use the Taranis Keypad to upload Firmware to your receiver / s.

  If you have #3 loaded, I dont think its possible to go back to the preferred #1 Firmware. (which is what I use)

If you keep moving your Tx aerial, twisting it to the side and straightening it up. Then bending it up and down etc you could have a fractured(partially on the screen/braid) aerial co-ax where it passes through the 'knuckle' joint on the aerial. Have you done a comprehensive range check when the Tx is giving this warning?

I cant. The warning is constant. The moment I switch it on.

But I'm wondering if the previous owner did the antenna mod? The antenna looks standard but it has black hot glue instead of white hot glue in place. I think maybe it's been done badly and now it's causing a fault?

It's my best guess I fear. :/

No, I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying. I'm not saying move the Tx aerial now when the Tx is on. I'm saying that excessive movement/extreme bending in the PAST may have damaged the aerial co-ax especially where it passes through the 'knuckle' joint on the aerial. There is a limit to how long the co-ax can be repeatedly bent back and forth. Plus, you don't know how the previous owner (mis)treated the Tx. The constant warning indicates to me a permanent fault. You need to do a range check, which I think the Tx will fail. Or, just change the aerial anyhow for the 5 dBi version. But, be aware that if the original fault was due to damaged co-ax it may have damaged the Tx RF o/p stage.
