Quanum Half Overlord

I've just seen the Quanum Half Overlord on Hobbyking site for £47. Looks like quite a good deal what are peoples thoughts on this?

From what I know about this setup, the angle of the antennas is too great in standard form, you end up with 'gaps' in the beam when you get further from it. The patch antennas that come with it are very good but as for any patch they don't have enough beam width to overcome the angle at which they are mounted. Other than that, Id say its a bargain for what you are getting. Ive never got on with having a wire going up to the goggles....No idea why but I find it really off putting, otherwise Id be tempted :)

Hi m8,

  Considering it has 3 video receivers in it, I'd say it's good value, although these things never did catch on.

As a long term Diversity Monitor user, I use a pair of 14 dbi Linear Patch antennas with good results, I like it. Best results usually mean a little hand tracking on the tripod. Not so hot if you are a goggle wearer as you cant aim it very accurately.
 
What is sadly lacking is that it does not state what kind of antennas these 3 big blue plastic housing antennas actually are..!!!??

The ones I use are vertically polarised, which means a Rubber Duck on your vtx.

I have seen some circular polarised Patch antennas from Aomway which are absolute rubbish...So, what are these then is the question you should be asking..?....Linear....or...Circular????

   Tri versity makes no sense at all unless these antennas are directional, so what kind are they..?

Alternately, you could put a skew on one RX and a pair of Helicals on the other two....That should work reasonably well..?

Before you do this, search Currykittens Youtube channel. I'm sure he did a video on him using a patch on his goggles and just using his head to track the plane.

These things sound great but in practice they're not really needed - at all. More overkill than overlord.

Edit: might be this one, using a helical instead of a patch - 5km, no problems.

Its not marked on them, no, so yeah, only way to find out is take them apart.
They are basically an original Spironet patch copy, so do perform pretty well....just not at the angles the main unit holds them.

If you place this on a tripod and give it a bit of up-tilt do you think the angle would be ok?

Or alternatively do you think you could just use some long flexi adaptors?

Its the spread angle that's the problem, there are 'gaps' between the beams. Flexi adapters on the outer two so you can angle them in a bit would work.

It's says on the website that the antenna are the aomway ones. Honestly, you'd have to just remove them for a different antenna because they just don't work.

                 Thanks for the info...at least they have copied a decent design then....Im surprised they didn't mark them: "Spironet Clone RHCP antenna"....lol.

I personally dislike CP antennas myself, never had much luck at all with them......I imagine at 14dbi, these Spironet RHCP copies have a very narrow beam width. 
  I have my 14dbi Linears aimed gently apart giving a wide beam coverage at distance, it works well.
