You could use other OSD`s no problem. They would not show you your flight modes, current / voltage readings, airspeed etc.

The video side does not pass through the APM, the APM just sends the data from the GPS and other sensors to the Minim to display.

If you used a separate OSD it would need its own GPS etc which would basically mean doubling up on everything and you would only see what the APM was doing / seeing via the Mission Planner on the laptop.

Coyote, on my Bixler I have nose-mounted the GoPro using the case.

What I did was, saw off the nose :D

Then I glued one of the plastic mounts (without the base) into the foam, leaving only the hole visible for the case to be screwed onto. That way I can still use the case and quick-release.

Thanks for that Steve, I will bear that building tip in mind :)

The maiden has been done.

It flew, but far from great in all honesty. The center of gravity must have been too far to the front ( nose heavy ), I was fighting the plane just trying to keep it level and turn it for the first minute or so. It was pitching up the nose most the time, climbing under throttle, but I managed to get it trimmed enough to get a decent length flight in before landing.

Because I had the correct CG ( I thought ) the way it was acting totally caught me out, the controls were very sluggish, then burst into life at full throws, it made for an interesting flight in the wind.

Thanks to Keith for freezing while filming )
Unfortunately unknown to both of us, I couldn't hear a word he was saying in the wind and he couldn`t hear me. The camera couldn't pick up what I was saying either in it all.
Big thanks to Dean, Keith`s son for taking the #16 footage and the camcorder footage and making this video for me

After asking a few lads on RCGroups about the CG point from various positions it looks like my CG was 20mm in front of the real CG point ( no fingerholes to go off ) so that would explain most the issues. I should be out again this afternoon if all goes well to find out if moving it back that 20mm fixes anything

The noobie error now would be to put the Autopilot in it and say, "well it flies, the autopilot will sort the rest out" Yes it flies, but not very well, need to get it tracking and responding properly before the autopilot gets any where near it. If I did hook up the APM now the APM would be fighting just to keep an unbalanced plane level even before starting the rest of its roles. More testing required first.

I dont want to hijack Ians thread here but I thought I would post this video of my X8 build here since I took a few ideas from his builds and incorporated them into mine.

Very good video presentation Mark, thanks for the mention :)

Your X8 is lovely, really well put together. Is there a follow up video of the inside ?

Very nice Mark, some cool ideas used, like the 3D printed launch handle :)

Thanks Ian! That handle was really necessary because I could not get a grip on the plane without pressing / touching the glass.

For the ones who are interested in the models I printed, here is my Thingiverse profile:

Among other things, I also made those DIY goggles with a 5" monitor.
