Stoney Cross facts

Stoney Cross had the longest runway of the 12 New Forest wartime airfields at 2000 yards (1.8km)

It was used extensively by the Royal Air Force's Army Co-operation Command and late in the war, and for a time afterwards, by its Transport Command

Many of the successful techniques employed on D-Day 6 June 1944 by British airborne troops using parachutes and gliders were developed by the Squadrons based at Stoney Cross. These squadrons also supported the Special Operations Executive with equipment drops into occupied Europe

The Ninth US Air Force of over 150,000 men was created in just a few months to support the invasion of France – a massive undertaking.

US pilots arriving at Stoney Cross were used to flying single-engined aircraft but arrived to find the twin-engine Lightnings

On D-Day 48 aircraft from Stoney Cross would be airborne at once, covering the Normandy beaches to keep the Luftwaffe away

Flying from Stoney Cross stopped in October 1946 and the airfield was handed back to the Forestry Commission in 1956.

Early WEATHER UPDATE....  reports of HIGH PRESSURE in the SOUTH starting from the end of the week ready for the weekend  !!!!!!   

I spose getting there early means less chance of getting kicked off.

Let's have a suggestion of an actual time then so we actually manage to meet up.  I don't know if early means 10am, or proper stupid-o-clock early ?  10am sounds nice to me, but I don't know if it will get all busy by then, so I'm flexable

Signal strength on the forest is patchy, but I'd suggest that maybe somewhere in the middle then to start. 8-9am that way its not silly o'clock and I won't have used my little 450mAh batteries up by the time other people arrive :)

If we get moved on, I ca always post here. So if we've disappeared, check the board.

I'll be camping over so will be up early. If anyone wants to get an early start to get the best winds and hopefully a cool sunrise then PM me and I'll exchange mobile numbers.

We should also discuss RC and video frequencies and systems so we don't blow each other's video out the sky.

I have two systems, both on 5.8 and one is RC305 and the other Airwave. Would be great if one of the more experienced chaps would be prepared to kinda oversee this on the day.

Well, I'll aim to arrive for 8ish then  Krikey - you are not alone in you battery concerns.  I only have 4 x 2200's, and at 5-7 minutes a flight on a Tri/Quad I could be in and out like a shot !

Agreed on the frequencies, I'm also on 5.8 (the RC305 thingy, not immersion) so channel avoidence is important - as is anyone that has video on 2.4Ghz, would would get severe interfearence if any of us 2.4Ghz radio uses powered on at the same time.

Suggest we sort that out on the ground when we get there
