I am sure this has been asked before and apologies if its in the wrong thread but I am currently using Movie Maker and find that it is messing up the quality of the video. I was pointed at something called shotcut www.shotcut.org (http://www.shotcut.org) and told it was the mutts nutts and doesn't compress the video, but I find it clunky and non intuitive. Plus the tutorials use a program that looks completely different to the downloaded one.
So what are you folks using?
sony vegas ....
Vegas 12
movie maker lol :)
because it's free and does everything I need it to do.... although I've tinkered with Cyberlink Power Director in the past, but only "trial versions" in an attempt to do some picture in picture stuff.

Movie maker has very bad compression it makes the quality awful and when you upload something edited with it on YouTube it's going to look like it was "filmed with a potato". If it's only about basic editing (trim cutting and replacing audio) then it's much more better to use an app that does not need to re-encode stuff.
So how about an editing app?

I used to use iMovie a lot (free & installed on Macs), fast exports and nice and easy to use. i had 2 issues with it (won't apply to most people):
1) If you want your video to have the video, a watermark in the corner, and text on the screen its fine, if you want any more layers then that, it gets a little unhappy.
2) Sometimes it would crash towards the end of exporting (i have an older machine that hasn't been reset since i got it, so it has a few niggles) and i would have to copy everything in the timeline, copy and paste it into a new project and export it again and it would be fine.
Since getting my gaming PC, I have started using Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13.0. Fantastic software that's super easy to edit with, and loads of videos around to show you how to use it (its not that hard)
I also use a plug-in called VASST Render Assistant.
I'm usually editing between 3-10 videos at a time, so instead of editing one, then waiting for it to export before editing the next one, i edit them all in one timeline, with gaps between each video, i then put markers (move the timeline slider thing to where you want it and press M) at the start and end of each video, then go into RenderAssitant, click markers, then start render, and it makes a video of what ever is between each marker (due to the gaps in the timeline, every other video it creates is one that you want, the others are just like 10 seconds of black).
As for compression, i usually render out of my editing software at as high of a quality as i can (with out it being something like ProRes that takes up gigantic amounts of space) and then render it again through HandBrake before uploading it.
The stock pre-sets that come with both MSP13 & HandBrake are fine and work great, but if anyone wants to try some custom ones i can share my settings to see if they are any better for you.

I use iMove too, I considered FCP but the features you gain aren't worth the infinite increase in price (£200 vs free).
My biggest gripe with iMovie is that you can't set the project video resolution and frame rate, this seems crazy to me. iMovie takes the video resolution (480p, 720p, 1080p) and frame rate from the first video dragged onto the timeline. The only way I found to get around this is to use some dummy assets I knocked up which are the exact resolutions and frame rates I want projects to be and I drag these on, then add the assets I really want, then delete the dummy asset.
Other than that, iMovie is great IMO and produces great quality output.
I used to use iMovie a lot but each new revision dumbs it down even more.....
For quick edits I use GoPro studio but it doesn't seem to like FPV cam Dave footage.
For more detailed stuff I am now trying Davinci Resolve. Great for colour correcting and there is a version at my favourite Yorkshire price!!

Sounds perfect but I don't have a Mac only a Windows 7 PC.
Is this similar http://www.imoviewindows.com/
I use Final Cut Pro X.
If anyone wants it for free drop me a PM ;)
Thats Mac only isnt it?
I like Cyberlink Power Director, works great.
Sony Vegas :D
dizzy :)
Im just downloading a free trial of Filmora... apparently it's as close to iMovie you can get without having a mac
Well that's not a good start... won't import my gopro files, just dies a death (not responding)
that's that uninstalled.
I bought Cyberlink Power Director 11 a few years ago and am still happy with it.
Just tried HitFilm 3 Express.... also crap
max resolution for project output is 1080p and max framerate is only 30fps
uninstalled...
now trying Shotcut 16.03

I tried that, took ages to download and looked nothing like the tutorial videos.
Try this
http://www.imoviewindows.com/
See if you can it to work, especially the transitions.
Shotcut 16.03 is far too basic, even windows movie maker has more features and a more intuitive GUI
unstalled...
downloading a legit trail version of cyberlink powerdirector 14 from their website... lets see...
Cyberlink PowerDirector 14 is ticking all the boxes right now.
I'm considering purchasing the full version once my 30 day trial is up.

Final Cut Pro X. I used to use iMovie, but it didn't quite cope with everything I wanted to do. FCPX is far easier for just dropping stuff where you like it and being able to make different resolutions/frame rates work together

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't that a Mac program only?

It's really good. I can tell it's very powerful yet it's not too complicated that it would put off a noobs like me

That's what I am looking for, something simple to use like moviemaker but something that doesn't screw up hd footage from an action camera by over compression or need hours and hours of tutorials.
Time to try the sample later today I think.
Ps
I presume you are using a fairly normal PC not a apple product?
I'm using an Acer Aspire XC600, Intel i3 3.3GHz, Intel HD Graphics, 8GB DDR3 RAM, Windows 10 (64 bit)

Well I just downloaded it and its horrible on my machine. The trial version wont allow me to import any of my MP4 files from the hard drive or from the camera (Git2 or Mobius), doesnt seem to like 1440 x 60FPS. Is this the same on your sample or have I downloaded something else?
I've imported and edited both raw MP4s from my GoPro as well as GoPro Studio converted clips, both were processed fine.
They were 1080p/60fps
However, the image stabilisation isn't very good on some of the clips I tried

Downloaded the trial version and its horrible on my machine. My trial version wont let me download from the Mobius or the Git2, doesnt like HD clips,(wants to create a "shadow" whatever that is then doesnt). Maybe my computers to old for it. Also the wizard wont let me delete the"style" it imposes.
Maybe its just me!
I'll delete is, update the graphics drivers and try again.

What am I doing wrong here? I have a video clip stored in a file on the hard drive. I go to import media file, click on the file, and a window pop up says "this action is not available on the trial version you need to buy etc etc". I try to import the raw file from the camera and it says the same.

Dont have a Mac...................but that might be the answer.

Check what happens when you process the video and how it uploads to youtube and vimeo. This trial version ive got will not import mp4 files, will only render at 25fps or to the lowest clip you include in the video, so 3 @ 60 and an intro at 25 = all @25. Anyway version 12 has most of what I would need and its only $14 in the USA.
Where did you download it from?
The v14 from the cyber web site. The v12 is for sale on eBay. If I went for this program I would only go for the 12 as I don't want or need any extras at all. Actually I have been talking to my bro in law who owns a graphic design co and does a bit of film production today. He thinks I'm mental sticking with a PC and the looming take over of win 10. He thinks I should switch over to a small used iMac.
