What is the Most Popular Video Editing Program

I am sure this has been asked before and apologies if its in the wrong thread but I am currently using Movie Maker and find that it is messing up the quality of the video. I was pointed at something called shotcut www.shotcut.org and told it was the mutts nutts and doesn't compress the video,  but I find it clunky and non intuitive. Plus the tutorials use a program that looks completely different to the downloaded one.
So what are you folks using?

because it's free and does everything I need it to do.... although I've tinkered with Cyberlink Power Director in the past, but only "trial versions" in an attempt to do some picture in picture stuff.

Movie maker has very bad compression it makes the quality awful and when you upload something edited with it on YouTube it's going to look like it was "filmed with a potato". If it's only about basic editing (trim cutting and replacing audio) then it's much more better to use an app that does not need to re-encode stuff.

So how about an editing app?

I used to use iMovie a lot (free & installed on Macs), fast exports and nice and easy to use. i had 2 issues with it (won't apply to most people):

1) If you want your video to have the video, a watermark in the corner, and text on the screen its fine, if you want any more layers then that, it gets a little unhappy.

2) Sometimes it would crash towards the end of exporting (i have an older machine that hasn't been reset since i got it, so it has a few niggles) and i would have to copy everything in the timeline, copy and paste it into a new project and export it again and it would be fine.

Since getting my gaming PC, I have started using Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13.0. Fantastic software that's super easy to edit with, and loads of videos around to show you how to use it (its not that hard)

I also use a plug-in called VASST Render Assistant.

I'm usually editing between 3-10 videos at a time, so instead of editing one, then waiting for it to export before editing the next one, i edit them all in one timeline, with gaps between each video, i then put markers (move the timeline slider thing to where you want it and press M) at the start and end of each video, then go into RenderAssitant, click markers, then start render, and it makes a video of what ever is between each marker (due to the gaps in the timeline, every other video it creates is one that you want, the others are just like 10 seconds of black).

As for compression, i usually render out of my editing software at as high of a quality as i can (with out it being something like ProRes that takes up gigantic amounts of space) and then render it again through HandBrake before uploading it.

The stock pre-sets that come with both MSP13 & HandBrake are fine and work great, but if anyone wants to try some custom ones i can share my settings to see if they are any better for you.

My biggest gripe with iMovie is that you can't set the project video resolution and frame rate, this seems crazy to me. iMovie takes the video resolution (480p, 720p, 1080p) and frame rate from the first video dragged onto the timeline. The only way I found to get around this is to use some dummy assets I knocked up which are the exact resolutions and frame rates I want projects to be and I drag these on, then add the assets I really want, then delete the dummy asset.

Other than that, iMovie is great IMO and produces great quality output.

I used to use iMovie a lot but each new revision dumbs it down even more.....

For quick edits I use GoPro studio but it doesn't seem to like FPV cam Dave footage.

For more detailed stuff I am now trying Davinci Resolve. Great for colour correcting and there is a version at my favourite Yorkshire price!!

Sounds perfect but I don't have a Mac only a Windows 7 PC.
