FPV HUB

Anyone out there hailing from the Hampshire area and know of any events or meets I can come along to as I'd like to learn more about FPV from the experts.

Well, as per the other thread, there's me and 3DJIM.  There's not much to learn from me, other than what not to do though.  But I too would love to meet up with other FPV'ers.

I'm in too, though I'd have to drive 60 odd miles to get back to my 'roots'. I would suggest Stoney Cross WWII Airfield - lots of open space, flat grass, parking and ...ponies!

I've been flying from Wilverley Pit/Plain as its a big open grass expanse. Stoney Cross sounds good. I'd love to see some other FPVers and their setups.

and here's me wondering what space you'd foudn in Southampton.  Which I guess was none, so you drove to the New Forest instead.  looks like a nice patch to fly, not so many trees  :-[

I'm kind of in the area as well (northern border of hampshire).

Maybe we should organize some sort of meetup on a weekend.

Hello -  Gav here and live next door to the Sports Ground in Lordswood, Southampton.  I confirm Pickett post is a great spot to fpv.   Plenty of space and perfect if nobody else about / in the carpark. You can setup your FPV clobber behind a bush and not be seen from the adjacent road lol. When Simon and myself met up there for an hour or so fpv'ing a couple turned up to chill out in the Sun and drink beer and saw us there with our stuff, but they didn't seem bothered (why would they).  I mean all they would of seen was 2 blokes sitting in camping chairs with weird headsets and goggles saying wow nice view up here / fly closer hehe lol and the sound of whirring motors in the far distance  :laugh:

look forward to a meet up of some kind!  ps i cant wait for the security verification letter typing to end on my post replies, as I cannot read the letters  :o  4th attempt lol

I think Stoney Cross is better for a lot of reasons. I've done Picket Post many times, but it's all valley in front of the car park, other side of the road is a long hill, but no features, just Heather with a busy road to Burley and the M27 too close for comfort I think. It's a small place, the car park is always full and tons of ponies and dog walkers. I think we'll have problems there.

At Stoney Cross it's very spread out - none too exciting terrain (except for the fact it's on a WWII airfield) but away from roads if you go in a bit. Lots of ponies but they're not frightened if you keep some alt and glide over them.

I am in 100% and will come down from Oxford any day. I think someone just needs to make a date and commit before the weather turns. I'll either stay at a guest house in Minstead £28 or camp at the site.

It's all gone quiet on this thread - needs someone to call out a date. So hows everyone for next Saturday (18th August) for Stoney Cross (as Flyboysee has argued so passionately for it)

Can't do the 18th. Week after or first weekend Sept. would fit for me.

I can do any date  ;D not that that helps!!!

I will try my best to get there - problem is that I'm away the weekend before at a Helicopter world record attempt (my second year at this) so getting another day pass is an issue - sad old git that I am.... anyway, I will try and get there even if its just to say hello.

Gawsh! Quite a few coming over. Thats great! I flew Stoney X last night, 10 mph wind great views (I swear my camera makes it feel higher than it is. But there was very little gust so for the most part the plane was very stable. I also got the opportunity to actually use my goggles which is great! Up till now its always been someone else using them.

Nice, that's about as smooth as I've seen a Spyhawk fly.  I really like the area, nice and open.  Makes me think that even I could fly fixed wing without too many disasters.

Don't mean to be a miserable git, but you might get in to trouble flying any sort of models there. They introduce a local law specifically for us.... Nice eh!
Real shame as it was a great place to fly until we met the rangers...

Suggest
get away from the road,
hide behind bushes,
fly a quite plane away from poeple and horses,
avoid campsite,
avoid busy weekends when rangers are out

Probably get a warning 1st time.

The female ranger is pretty hot BTW. Doesn't respond well to being asked to have sex there though... !

I flew for about an hour, and it started getting dark. Took a few more vids but not much more full FPV. I relied on the built in display on the SpyHawks TX to get some bearings at some points like lining up with the road running down the side of the old airfield. Some of the finals were gliding in from a couple of hundred feet up (its hard to tell) on next to no power and into the wind, and the stabilisation guided me in.

One thing the SpyHawk doesn't do well, is fly fast into what could be considered a low headwind, but then, its only small and what it lacks in speed it makes up for in forgiveness :)

Should we therefore have a backup plan? I for one don't want to spook wildlife and maybe with a bunch of aircraft buzzing around and a bunch of us all wearing headsets, as much as the female ranger is hot, I for one don't wish to upset anyone or have anyone turn up with handcuffs and truncheons.

Turning up on mass might be a bit of a giveaway - mind you I quite like the idea of trying to sweet talk the "hot" ranger-ess!

We might need to re-think this one....

Just need another spot incase we get moved on, I wont bring the skywalker cos its loud and big, but the quads im sure wont attract much attention due to noise.

I've never had a problem there, or anywhere in the Forest. I'll contact the Head Agister and tell him our plans and see what they say.

Called the HCC, waiting on return call, been away. Just thinking about it, sometimes after for permission is asking for trouble??? I really don't think we'd have hassles at Stoney Cross as we could go in about 50m and be well camouflaged. That would give a reasonable height and distance range in 3 directions taking elevation and trees into account. Navigation should be easy cos of intersecting roads and motorway.

I reckon we Nike it, and if we get trouble, there are lots of spots close by to go to. My only concern would be weather / wind.

What do you guys think? My weekend pass has been authorised :)

might not be gps enabled by then but should have my 450 naza with 2 axis cam gimbal all rigged up for a test.  Not sure to just use live out on gopro for fpv or add a mini fpv cam that I have in stock. hmmm  I know the light level on the gopro av out is a bit dark hmmm.

Evnin peeps!

Had a quick fly at stoney cross on me way home tonight! (I pass it every day)  was about 20mph+ wind blowing me about summit wicked!, was testing new gopro strap down and graup 9x5 on tbs discovery....was very windy and flew LOS as no spotter. Need to go to 4s on 9x5 Graups but on the whole felt much better, gopro is now vibe free too after I balanced the crap out of the props. :D

Not sure I like the 9's more just trying to get the frame to fly how I like, and was a bit peeved that I could still see the 9" props in the cam view even tho the designers try and flaunt the fact that the arms are out of the way, Im not sold on the frame yet but need more tweaking time.

Stoney Cross facts

Stoney Cross had the longest runway of the 12 New Forest wartime airfields at 2000 yards (1.8km)

It was used extensively by the Royal Air Force's Army Co-operation Command and late in the war, and for a time afterwards, by its Transport Command

Many of the successful techniques employed on D-Day 6 June 1944 by British airborne troops using parachutes and gliders were developed by the Squadrons based at Stoney Cross. These squadrons also supported the Special Operations Executive with equipment drops into occupied Europe

The Ninth US Air Force of over 150,000 men was created in just a few months to support the invasion of France – a massive undertaking.

US pilots arriving at Stoney Cross were used to flying single-engined aircraft but arrived to find the twin-engine Lightnings

On D-Day 48 aircraft from Stoney Cross would be airborne at once, covering the Normandy beaches to keep the Luftwaffe away

Flying from Stoney Cross stopped in October 1946 and the airfield was handed back to the Forestry Commission in 1956.

Early WEATHER UPDATE....  reports of HIGH PRESSURE in the SOUTH starting from the end of the week ready for the weekend  !!!!!!   

I spose getting there early means less chance of getting kicked off. 

Let's have a suggestion of an actual time then so we actually manage to meet up.  I don't know if early means 10am, or proper stupid-o-clock early ?  10am sounds nice to me, but I don't know if it will get all busy by then, so I'm flexable

Signal strength on the forest is patchy, but I'd suggest that maybe somewhere in the middle then to start. 8-9am that way its not silly o'clock and I won't have used my little 450mAh batteries up by the time other people arrive :)

If we get moved on, I ca always post here. So if we've disappeared, check the board.

I'll be camping over so will be up early. If anyone wants to get an early start to get the best winds and hopefully a cool sunrise then PM me and I'll exchange mobile numbers.

We should also discuss RC and video frequencies and systems so we don't blow each other's video out the sky.

I have two systems, both on 5.8 and one is RC305 and the other Airwave. Would be great if one of the more experienced chaps would be prepared to kinda oversee this on the day.

Well, I'll aim to arrive for 8ish then  Krikey - you are not alone in you battery concerns.  I only have 4 x 2200's, and at 5-7 minutes a flight on a Tri/Quad I could be in and out like a shot !

Agreed on the frequencies, I'm also on 5.8 (the RC305 thingy, not immersion) so channel avoidence is important - as is anyone that has video on 2.4Ghz, would would get severe interfearence if any of us 2.4Ghz radio uses powered on at the same time.

Suggest we sort that out on the ground when we get there

Easily done, do you guys have chargers with DC in...? If not, I or someone else will have and we can do it in the car / van :)

well you can but you might want that engine running... and depends on the battery being charged!

Hey Dave_B. What's the hold up with your twin? Reason I'm asking is I've recently bought one and busy with it now, seems like an easy enough build etc... Though I've made almost zip progress in the week since I got it and had hassles with a dodgy batch of HS81's. I was hoping to fly it this coming weekend, but probably better not to rush it. Are you doing a counter rotating set up?

I'll be in the Market for brekkie after my first flight at 06:00 (if the weather plays ball!)

Even tho im a short ass I can eat my own weight in one sitting so im up for some grub!!, Just a thought but if we all meet at the campsite, just kinda roll up casual to FB's camping corner and take it from there, I could bring one of those single ring gas hob things in a case with frying pan and loads of bacon and stuff!! just a thought.

Im on Immersion 5.8 on both my quads im bringing, and on 2.4 frsky control, not sure if im bringing the the sw yet but that on 1.2 thats piped into 5.8 and sent to the goggs from the mfd tracker.... will prolly bring it anyway and see how it goes.

I will bring 4 x chargers to run out of my van for anyone needing a top up, 2 of the chargers can do 20amp charging so if you have nanao techs I can ram them at 5c charge for rapid redeployment!.

I will aim to be with FB at 8am :)

Flyboysee. What campsite are you at and have you booked a specific pitch? Some of the Forest campsites now charge for people coming in for the day in their cars. Bit of a cheek I think so might be worth parking outside and walking in.

Don't worry Dave, I've bought lights, ordering my 3rd set of servo's, have done my tail (put servo's far back with m2 rods), obsessed about the wings, had to modify motor mounts and have counter rotating props. £D Jim reckons they should rotate outwards, but that it doesn't matter much. So, as I said, you're in good company. I think the plane is worth it and quite rare around here. I'm also doing pan and tilt - def want to see those motors spinning in flight :)

Please bring yours along, ready or not. Mine may just be ready for some LOS t3sting - maybe maiden non the day.

Krikey I'll be staying at Ocknell, right next door. Yeah they charge £3 for a car??? Who cares, Friday is payday :)

Yeah I will try 8am too.  I will only have my trusty mini short range FPV'd quad and maybe dji naza quad if I get the bits and have time to set it up.

5.8MHz video and 2.4Ghz transmitter for me.

Going to aim for as near 8 as possible, but about 90 minute drive and not sure I can be bothered to get up at 6 to get there  :D Looking forward to meeting you all.

horay my DJI NAza turned up after I returned it as the USB wouldnt connect.  Anyway finally airborne but need to build up my cam gimbal now.   I think I may only be LOS for my naza platform.  but got another mini hack about quad I have fpv ready.  See you tomorrow.

ps I need to take out shares in Cable ties and double sided foam tape at the rate I get through the stuff!!!!

Well, I've printed out the map - lets see where my non-existant sense of direction takes me.  Not a problem, I'll just put "unknown road" into the TomTom and see where I end up.

I don't suppose anyone is taking a laptop.  My 3-way switch *seems* to be working on the 9x, but I'll need to recheck in the morning just to make sure values haven't drifted around

Curry I have a laptop coming but don't have software, so bring it. If ur coming from Soton side best way is to take Cadnam roundabout, 3rd exit - drive till you pass two pubs, take 2nd left, go up road past golf course. Keep on up then take 1st left and just keep driving straight. Some roads merge but don't worry, keep going straight and if you see them follow signs to Ocknell Camp. My van will be at first parking on right hand side after Janes Pond. Black van with 'Merge' on it. Look for high PVC antenna mast behind bushes - voila! :)

despite being moved on from Stoney Cross, I think we managed to have some fun down at the TestLane field in Soton.  Nothing broken or lost and was nice to meet you guys!  Need to balance my props as got a wobbly video from my naza quad.   Either that or record with 60fps on the gopro to soak up the shakes lol.  But gimbal worked nicely!  sorry didnt take many photos.


edit  just realised one motor shaft is banana shape and bearings are shot.  Well the motors were off my very first quad that fell out the sky from 100-200ft once as per this video..FF to 1:10 min for crash

Used to live in Hythe then Poole, so know Stoney Cross.

Maybe you could enter a complaint of horse riders upsetting your hobby?

The Forestry Commission in Cornwall, once a year, allow a local car club to run races on the tracks in Halvana Plantation.
It's an all day event and horse riders, even if they have riding permits, are excluded from the forest.
The FC say, quite rightly, that the forest is for the enjoyment of everyone.

It's a little ironic that the horse riders seemed to be spooking the ponys and cattle, whereas when we launched any craft all that happened was the cows got inquisitive and wandered over not freaked out in the slightest.

Anyway, thems the rules, whether we like them of not I suppose.

Great to meet everyone, and I had some nice flights.  I'll sort some video out later, but I also took a few quick snaps with my phone, just trying to get the line up of models.  First up is the intial bunch of us

Real shame about Stoney, the field in Cross Lane was ok, but just felt a little hemmed in.  To be fair, the ranger himself didn't have an issue, and understood very quickly the potential uses of FPV.  Quite what the problem with the horseriders was I don't know - I think the girl just fell off and looked around for someone to blame... anyone other than herself

Ok so im going to sort a field for the next one where we can stay all day in one spot!, and we can get into it a bit better, but on the whole an excellent day.

And I think the Ranger is now  a Naza convert after I took him for a spin up and down the runway and surroundings!!

FB and I where flying all day today and had another awesome time, FB's FPV went up about 10 notches this weekend!! Was great to see him make some mega leaps forward!! well done mate was a great time!.

Hase, I hope it wasn't to expensive for the repairs m8ty, And I thought you took it very well, what an awesome bit of kit that is!!.

rig went full right aileron and couldn't maintain height.
no idea why.

@ Jim: yes - bit out of focus, but managed to get quite a bit on tape. We do that again in a bit.

Thanks for that, really appreciated! Can I ask does the Go Pro mount just sit on top of a servo? The reason I'm asking is that I'd like a Go Pro and flight cam. G Collins has made one for the SW and I bought one and am thinking about modding that bit to the ready made stuff to get the best of both worlds. Panning on a prop with a CMOS camera causes a warp like image, and I have to say, as strange as it sounds, panning on the motors is half the appeal of the Twin* for me. Nutters are we? (speaking for myself here).

Again, really nice meeting you and hoping you'll post up the build to completion.

Hey Krikey, I like that thinking!

Would anyone consider taking a drive up to greater Oxford area - about 1hr:10 min's from Soton?

I have provisional agreement from the local 'mayor' of Great Haseley (actually, the old chap who manages public facilities) for a meet at our local cricket oval field. If anyone has seen any of my vids you'll know it then. It is well sheltered by a hedge and is flanked by my village on the left (old Gothic) and has farm land around the rest.

I can safely fly over 1km at 50m altitude in all directions, and I suspect the longest flight possible would be about 10km over an open shallow valley. In case of a downing, all the fields are accessible by foot and have recently been harvested - about 2km radius in three directions.

The field has a club house, where we could barbie and store drinks and has a shady deck to chill and view the flying. Parking is secure at the field, which doubles up as a recreational centre, but with a total population of 210, is hardly ever used by the locals, who are pretty friendly anyway. Would make for a good venue for a family day out.

So what do you guys think? Offer it here on this thread as a Southern meet, or start a new thread and chat to the Oxford, Surrey and Midlands boys?

Now, more importantly, does anyone know of a good wind forecast - that is the x variable as always.

I'll get the permission official then. There will just have to be a small 'no fly zone' over the Manor House - but the Village, Church and fields are open game.

When the weather improves I'm going to attempt a parachute drop onto my lawn from about 1km out - distance from my house to that particular field :)

I think Josh will come. I'll confirm a day or so before we leave. We'll bring the spy hawk and hopefully a fully FPVed AXN. Had its maiden the other day but with bog standard kit needless to say I was thrilled. It's a bit different to the little spy hawk as you feel you're actually getting somewhere.

Got the Nova OSD yesterday too so now trying to figure out where that's going to go. Even if Im not fully kitted up for FPV I'll bring it along and get some advice.

Really looking forward to it.
