I've set my radio to read out the rssi values at 46 and below. Trouble is once I hear it start I instantly panic even though from what I've read I can probably go much further before having any issues (38 I believe is game over, starting shopping for a new plane).

Something to consider - and I have had great success with.

Trim your model on fail-safe to cut the power and initiate a slow turn - in the direction that exposes the antenna with the lease amount of 'plane' in the way.

Normally if you loose rf, this turn and antenna exposing gives you a bit of grace time allowing you to cream back toward yourself.

Yeah I was interested in this LR receiver, might be what I need as second system for short range stuff. DragonLink receivers are bloody huge and not suitable for small 250s or even small wings.

I assume they are just extra sensitive? and not being transceivers for telemetry probably helps.
