What are the main factors preventing the fabrication of a wing half that already has a blunt section? i.e. a flat curve at the front, as opposed to a point?

that way there would be no real need for the monkey blunt style structure on these types of wing.

I had an original monkey blunt on one of my many tek sumo wings, one crash and the centre section was rendered useless, also the wing halves are better glued to each other than a "third party" centre section.

without the centre section, these EPP wings are virtually indestructible, even without lamination.

for me, lamination works best when the wings halves are not only glued together but then the seam is laminated over... that's impossible to do with the centre sections in the Falcon and Venturi EVO wings... best you can hope for is laminate the individual wings and then glue them to the centre.

not trolling, just a genuine question... would it even be possible to wire cut EPP wing halves like that?

or what about an actual solid EPP centre section with the exact same airfoil cross section as the wing roots? you could glue EPP to EPP and laminate over the seams.

That looks great Mark, and a similar story to mine with family and work time constraints making for a slow build.

Finished mine last weekend, just got to find the time to fly  now, and the weather of course.

Any launching tips, I usually throw my FX61 overhead with power on, the venturi is quite a bit heavier and not add easy to get a grip of.

Really good question and I have thought the same myself.

Compare that to a wing- where without a centre section you cut into the foam which has the following disadvantages

1) spoils the airflow and lift over that centre section
2) weakens wing
3) fixed battery compartment size & CG issues

A centre section fixes the above.

I broke my Venturi on the maiden and have never got around to repairing it. It flew great but I lost orientatioj and down she went. Wings were fine- centre section knackered.

In truth I have been meaning to bond the two wings together and make a motor mount and try and fly it again. Would be a bit narrower but would fly great I suspect. Maybe I will get on and do it this winter.

Are you going to use your bungee ramp or hand launch it?

Hand launching  is the preferred option . Once I'd twigged the requirement for positive reflex with the Z2 I had no probs with hand launching.... that is until that last fateful one that ended in a pile of foam and wires !   :(              ( which you witnessed  ;D  )


If I have the Funjet with me there's no reason not to stick this on the ramp too though.

I think I'll be doing an over arm launch with full power similar to what Chris at Ritewing recommends with the Z2.   I'm thinking of putting a recess in the bottom foam panel to hook a finger into to get some extra grip, maybe 3d print a little plastic insert for my finger to sit in so I'm not pulling the foam apart.

Yeah that's how to do it. Grab the leading edge right up against the centre section.
A little reflex (up trim) is a must.

Yes, I got one of the Hobbyking ramps after a 50% failure rate getting my funjet in the air.  Once I had the ramp it became a 100% success rate  :D

Of course it's more gear to take but if you leave some of the screws a bit loose, it folds up flat and opens out  in a second and if you cut away a bit from the 90 degree joints on one side you can make the width adjustable for different sized planes.  I think its a great bit of kit.  ;D

After my encounter with a 12" carbon prop I made a bungee launcher from a few 3D printed parts and 21mm waste pipe from the DIY shop. It folds down really compact so I can carry it with all my other FPV kit in one trip to the field.

I also made a release mechanism using Arduino that counts down from 15 seconds before launching which lets you arm it then get back to your chair, get your tx in one hand, beer in the other and launch in style!
