A craft is a lot heavier when its lipos are full of electricity on takeoff - near the end of a flight, it could be 5 or 600 grams lighter as they empty.

What would happen in this case?

I see your point but an American will say he owns a gun for self protection. Wether it's true or not is another matter. Can't say the same about a quad though can you?
I'm not saying you shouldn't register guns but the registration of drones is just pointless.

Ownership of firearms is the second amendment of the constitution , based on the law of the right to keep and bear arms in  English Common Law ( not Scotland NI or Wales) I suppose if drones had been around  in 1791 they would have been incorporated.

This petition, filed in August 2014, asks the court to review the FAA's interpretation of the "Special Rule for Model Aircraft." The central issue is whether the FAA has the authority to expand the definition of aircraft to include model aircraft; thus, allowing the agency to establish new standards and operating criteria to which model aircraft operators have never been subject to in the past.

I was actually surprised and dismayed by IBCrazy's stance on the matter ... just to pay up to avoid a potential lawsuit because it was "only five dollars". I felt he missed the point entirely and was basically doing exactly what the FAA need people to do.. as they're told.

IMO this is the one chance people in the USA have to make the FAA work for them and come to a meaningful conclusion that is good for all parties involved - pandering to their whims is not the way to do that.

What, after all the litigation he's been through? No legal aid in the states you know, only a public defender. I reckon it's the safe thing to do, pay up, shut up, stay under the radar.

Exactly - it doesn't matter if it's $5 or $50 it's the fact that you, having done nothing wrong, have to provide your personal information to a government repository. And they're threatening to fine you up to $27,000 and/or a 3 year spell at Obama's pleasure with a felony on your record for good measure if you don't.

...... it's the fact that you have to provide your personal information to a government repository.

Someone, somewhere in a government Defence Dept. has been tasked with gathering this information ........ in an 'innocent' way (now decided by way of drone registration).

With this info the armed forces have exactly the list they need of names to forcibly call into the armed forces as offensive drone pilots (Reapers etc.) whenever a next major international conflict occurs.

This new list will join with all the other existing lists the UK Defence Dept already keeps, regularly updated, of people involved in various civilian occupations that, in time of conflict, could immediately assist a rapid increase in deployment of armed forces, e.g. lorry drivers, transport and other logistical personnel. Engineers of varying types (elec & mech); civil airline pilots, air traffic controllers, radar operators etc., etc.
