nice one splashy! where ya located?

Taunton .. but might be able to travel .. will have to see how long the new plane lasts.

Teejay ... how do they handle crashing ?

I have one of these Steve, I'm going to run my FPV and my HD key cam of it hopefully. the range Video 5.8ghz has 8 separate channels and a clover will give us 1300ft of clear footage which gives us 2600ft radios, that's nearly 800m, or gust under 1/2 mile that's not a bad course size

ok, so I'm now thinking about FPV gear, for size and weight its got to be 5.8 altho this might put some restrictions on the circuits, but we'll see.

With me always looking to get everything as cheap as possible and having seen the great results Gordons got from the bare bones range video offering I started to do a little research this morning.

The Range video TX is a TX5823 and the RX is a RX5808, which I've found around $10 cheaper here (for them both)...

TX = $16 http://www.crazyshoppingcart.com/58g-200mw-wireless-av-transmitter-module-p-5438.html

RX = $13 http://www.crazyshoppingcart.com/58-receiver-wireless-av-module-p-5441.html

Altho I was very impressed with gordons setup the TX runs on 5v which is an issue as it means incuring extra weight and loss of space do to either running a voltage drop thingy or carry an extra power source to supply 5v.

So this leads me to consider this one which runs on 12v but is yet to be tested by anyone I know or indeed I am yet to find anyone using it for fpv. Altho I've just done some reading and theres some opinions that this may be a typo by good luck and its actually 5v (the image shows a 2.4 tx apparently).

TX/RX = $35 http://www.goodluckbuy.com/5-8g-200mw-wireless-av-transmitter-module5-8g-video-av-receiver-set-for-fpv-system.html

Which leaves me all a pickle...

Having seen Gordons system work so well I think I'll go with tried and tested and order the TX/RX from Crazy Shopping Cart as they're only £20 including postage... I'll have to deal with the voltage problem.

hmmm slight prob, when I go to order through crazy shopping I get paypal in chinese :o

I have in my drawers a rather good collection of power supplies (2 x the Range Video one) and 5 x variable output and 3 x HK 5V BEC. If you would like any of these just let me know and I will post you one out on Monday.

I also have a couple of 3.3V BEC since the other tiny 200mW TX i have purchased have been 3.3V

Pasty

nice one splashy... thanks!

I took the plunge and ordered the same 5.8 gear as Gordon but from CrazyShoppingCart.com for £22 all in.... not bad!

hexo

I'm gonna have to get ordering as well then!

Yes, I did as well.
If you need the 3.3V BEC or DC-DC just let me know.

Pasty

the more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards using a second battery for the vtx, its not gtoing to weigh much more than a BEC or a stepper and will give you a nice clean camera image... so you save on the weight of an lc filter on your power lead.

I have been running my 3.3V VTX on 3.7V with a Nano Tech 300mAh and have had no problems with it. I do think however that it would be more prudent to run it off 3.3V via a BEC.

I have been looking at the specs for the Crazy Shopping Cart VTX and RX and cannot work out what exactly I am going to receive. The site states transmitter frequency:5725-5865MHz;  8channels but the data sheets (from foxtechfpv) give
5705
5685
5665
5645
5885
5905
5925
5945

I am inclined to believe the foxtech frequencies which mean that it will work with a 305 receiver (which I have 3 of).

If anyone has one of these VTX/RTX units then it would be good to know whether the frequencies are as stated on the site.

It sounds like this thread may answer your query.

This race sounds really cool!

is it a strict one design race?

Range video sell the same VTX with the proper info... I never trust china specs ;)

yeah it'll work with your RC305.

http://www.rangevideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=35_59&products_id=217

and a little more digging on the net tells me that the RC305 uses the RX5808 module I listed above.... so we're all singing off the same sheet.

If this takes off we'll have plenty of time to run extra races on a race day or race weekend, so to add to the one design class we'll probably have an unlimited class for running whatever you like.

The emphases is more about having a laugh and excitement with minimum fuss rather than serious racing so rules and regs etc will be kept low on the agenda.

All races will be held over private land with the agreement of the land owner (I've got 3-4 big land owners I can get onboard)...

We should have a mix of circuits including beaches, flat land, old quarry workings and valleys.

I've even got a gazebo we can use as a race tent :)

I should also say that these races will be geared around testing a pilots skill rather than how many watts he/she can cram into an airframe so the circuits wont be flat straight lines with few corners, the circuits will include natural obsticales as gates, turn points etc. There will be long sweeping turns, hairpins and chicanes with the turn points being natrual obsticals that you have to fly AROUND below there total height rather than over.

thats enough thinking for now :)

Cool - wish I lived down your way to join in. Billy no mates up here.

BTW, I had teh larger version of that plane. Flew like a dream one set up correctly. Probably the nicest plane I've flow. The foam was crap though. Snapped if looked at it. I think yours are EPO though
Still flying up my own arse ....
And giving Bignose one up his..
Moister than an Oyster...........
