Title: Time for Mad Dogs 3! MEET FULL, ALL PLACES FILLED!
Post by: Flyboysee on February 28, 2013, 12:38:12 AM
Hi All!

Do you also think it's about time? Spring is about to spring and with that we'll have better, more predictable weather, blossoms in bloom and sunshine :)

The only decisions this time around is do we have it in Great Haseley, South Oxfordshire or in The New Forest, Hampshire and the most important question of all, when?

What say the usual suspects, members of the inner sanctum and anyone interested in meeting fellow addicts and a great day's FPV?

Richard

PS: For those who haven't heard of Mad Dogs, see videos from various members from the different meets here... Please send me a link if I've missed any.

Sounds good, I'm always always up for a fly with everyone.

Location is a tricky one.  The New Forest has a more varied landscape, not to mention ponies, and people on bikes to harass.  But last time we went there in decent numbers we also got thrown out.

Great Haseley - has the potential to have power for recharging, a place to get out of the cold (if it's cold), and a flushing toilet !

You've taken the long drive down to NF the last few times, so I do feel you're owed the luxury of wandering a few hundred metres to fly.  Up to you !

The when is potentially even harder isn't it - we're all living day-by-day looking at the forecast and mainly hoping it's not going to be as bad as they say.  As soon as we think we have relatively predictable weather, then lets get a date in the diary.

OK CK, you've pulled my arm, Gt Haseley it is :) I'll throw the bones on the weather once everyone has given some input. Going by history, we have managed to call some good days!

This time I'll do a horse free barbi!

Title: Re: Time for Mad Dogs 3! Southern Pilots Check-in
Post by: CurryKitten on February 28, 2013, 01:21:56 PM
Channel seperation + physical seperation should allow 3 people in the air at the same time.  It's always a bit tricky to get going though as generally when people first switch on, they are in quite close proximity of other peoples video receivers - and you can get quite heavy ghosting or worse.  *Usually* this clears up once the second person has taken off.

It's generally done as a one person launch - second person turns on, but is ready to turn off quickly at any sign if bad video, they launch, then 3rd person turns on etc etc

Jim / Simon / Krikey

Great, it would be good to see Jim and Simon here. Could be a fantastic opportunity to get some yummy footage for the showreel and for everyone to see how you team up for a shoot. If the light is good, you should get fantastic views of the Church and yards etc - would just need to set up behind the club house.

Krikey, how about proposing the first date? Dust off that crytsal ball mate, we're looking for happy, shiny days!

Richard

How about any Saturday from the start of April so:

6th April
13th (unlucky for some) April
20th April

Unless we want to wait a bit for some warmer weather:

Around 1 month later and the average temp soars to 18 degrees. This is all based on 2012 weather from Benson airbase just down the road.

Of course, to hedge our bets nearer the time we can choose the weekend. It'll be around 5-11 degrees centigrade even at that time of the year, so I'll be wearing longjohns.

What's she situation with the Pavillion Rich? Shall we bring some Wonga like we all did last time?

I know what you're saying mate, but Heisenberg's uncertainty principle says that if you have a 30 foot collapsible pole stowed in the back of the car, then you won't fly into trees in the first place.

...or if you have a 30ft pole, you may land 40ft up a tree :)

As we're getting a bit closer (hopefully), I thought I'd try and help get some landmarks together... as when myself and krikey were up last week, Richard kept shouting things like "go to the twin trees" and we didn't know what he was on about.  However, thanks to the benefit of people hitting trees and things, some other name references are now available.

Bloody hell CK, that's classic! Btw, your arrow for Jim's tree is very close to the final resting place of the Twinstar - it crashed in that horses field where the arrow is, just a little up, maybe 10m. Can it be named, or are we only talking meet incidents?

Also, someone crashed in the lower field with a Couds Fly I'm sure... was it Neil? Jim got it on video, the guys walking back up a hedge line. Where the word 'field is' marks the spot of Dave_B's fatal bipe crash and lest we forget Mark's record for shortest maiden, just to the bottom left of the pitch, which coming to think of it was the scene of the mid air between Davey and Gav :)

Someone please set a bloody date already! :)

Doesn't need to be a meet Rich - hence Krikey's ditch from last week.  Also this "twin tree's" thing you made up... you'd be surprised how many sets of two tree's together there were when we looked around.  Feel free to add more - although it's a bit of a tongue in cheek idea, easy to remember references are very useful - and there are an awful lot of tree's, and borders of fields that would be useful to differentiate when you are trying to describe your position

Love it!!! Oddly enough, after speaking to Richard and Wayne I was doing exactly the same thing with Google Earth. As much as its tongue in cheek its also useful to shout things out so a great start!

I'd also add the compass to this map as well so that directions to "heading West towards Jims Tree at 80 metres" actually mean something.

Maybe I'm over thinking things and I wish we recorded some of our attempts in the past to try to "meet up" in mid air as I'm sure they're rather funny

Now all we need is some kind of GPS tech to transmit our coords back to a base station and plot little dots on a screen:)

At the moment my skill runs out well before my battery life.  :-[

I hope you got some video Dave! Is that a NAZA quad or what? Would love to see it. How about you setting a date for the next meet? The invitation is open, but those wanting to take responsibility for a date are slim pickings. Looks like the weather is here to stay.

Cheers!

Better get a wiggle on or those northern boys (& girls) will be having a second meet before we have one!

Rich - it's your party, I think you should suggest a date.  Are we looking for something "soon" or more summery.  Soon then what about May 18th... something a bit more summer-like then June 22nd

I've literally looked at my google calendar and picked ones at random... but at least it's a starting point for discussion

Very nice Dave!

I'll do some head scratching, have a look at the dates for FPV Bounce then get back here with a suggestion.

You guys wanna go for clubhouse, beers and barbie dividing costs, or have no facilities for £0.00? Please let me know your preference.

Richard

Well can't do beer because of the driving thing - but certainly having the clubhouse is always fantastic with a place to charge lipos and get a coffee.

I just had to google Boerewors a curious looking curly sausage that looks a bit like a very long dog turd... yum :)

***UPDATE - UPDATE - UPDATE***
MAD DOGS - SPRING MEET

Hi guys!

Alright, I'm thinking Saturday 1st June 2013. It's officially still spring, so we could do another within three months to get a summer one in as well.

How do you all feel about the date? Again, per my rationale it's close to pay day and a Saturday so if the weather is bad, we always have the option for the Sunday as a back up. That adds a further 50% chance of success.

I was thinking that if we get 8 - 10 people costs would probably be reigned in at about £20 per head. This includes our usual £10 contribution each for the facilities (club house, toilets, charging points, shade, tables, coffee cups, kettle etc.) The remaining £10 will go towards a Continental style beakfast of coffee / tea, croissants etc, and a lunch of ZA stylee 'gebraaide' Boerewors rolls, salad and beer (as well as non alchoholic) and cool drinks / mineral water.

Does that sound like a plan?

For those who are attending, I want to try something new. There's a field up the road (about 900m away line of sight) that I will arrange access to. The idea is to have someone launch your plane from there, while piloting in the goggles from the main field, or the other way around. CK, Krikey and myself have been discussing remote take off's - could be interesting!

PS: It might be nice to have a projector. I will run a long coaxial lead with RCA and adaptors to fit all our receivers so the folks inside (either visitors or pilots with heat stroke) [we should be so lucky!!!] can watch the action from inside the clubhouse. Neil, was that you?

I'm up for the 1st June. I'll bring the projector and probably no need for screen as we can project into the East wall if I recall.

£20 sounds fair and maybe suggest a fair way of collecting funds so that you're not out of pocket on the day. There's a great service called gocardless.com or maybe simply let us know your Paypal details and we wire you the money 1 week prior to the event at the latest and if your names not down you ain't coming in :)

That should secure numbers and allow you to buy in ready for the feast and ensure that we can get the clubhouse.

Krikey - Confirmed. Thanks for the projector! The wall will be just fine.

Quadbod - Possibly, maybe. Please let us know.

Bignose - "I'm busy, but could do week before / after". Now I was thinking, when does the nose grow...? :) I will definitely make it to a meet in Pontypridd mate, just name the date! Build it and they will come!

Should we cut off at 10? Or... is someone willing to canvass everyone for frequencies both video and RC then set up slots if it gets to more than 10. Remember last time?

Richard

If everyone adds their name and frequencies to this spreadsheet we can match em up and see what we end up with.

Charlie, I think that the 2.4 RC channel hops to find the best freq so I would suspect that you'll be ok with control as it'll (hopefully) find the least noisy channels.

Could be wrong ;)

The guys "up north" have put together a Justin.tv link http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,12495.msg106719.html#new (http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,12495.msg106719.html#new) for their meet today from 9:00am. I may be tuning in later and also to see how the feed turns out.

Well done guys.

We'll have the projector and try to set up a feed from some of the flyers. It would be good to have an audio feed too for chat etc. iPhones with Apple default earbuds/mic are great for recording audio. Now I wonder if there's a head band for an iPhone :)

Does the new GoPro Hero 3 transmit video over WiFi?

So to work this out we need to put everyone in a category. So far we've got the following:

1. 5.8 vid + [anything but 2.4rc] - uhf/35/72 - 4 planes/people
2. 5.8 vid + 2.4 rc - 2 planes/people
3. 2.4 vid + [anything but 2.4rc] uhf/35/72 - 2 planes/people

So the categories that can fly together are 1+2 and 1+3.

Some additional limitations in terms of channel numbers and it's a bit confusing as I've counted some people twice as they have multiple entries in the spreadsheet. But as we get it filled out I'll put together a matrix on the spreadsheet.

Do we know that DL and EzUHF work well together?
Title: Time for Mad Dogs 3! Southern Pilots Check-in
Post by: DaveyLC on April 28, 2013, 10:42:41 AM
4 people can fly on immersion 5.8 the channel spacing allows for it if you use  say 1,3,5 and 7. The NexWave rx's are sensitive enough .

Me and ratty regularly fly together and were both on 5.8 and EzUHF
Title: Re: Time for Mad Dogs 3! Southern Pilots Check-in
Post by: Ratty on April 28, 2013, 11:18:32 AM
EZ and DL work fine together. According to Sander anyway. There is a vid of 5 Zephs flying together, 4 on EZ and 1 on DL.

The key to multiple planes in the air is to have good ground separation. Its when the plane on the floor is close to someones VRx that there will be most probs.

Also power outputs, if someone is flying with 200mw and someone else turns on a 600mw on the floor they will get swamped.

Title: Mad Dogs - Important Announcement
Post by: Flyboysee on May 01, 2013, 10:31:19 PM
Hear Ye Hear Ye Hear Ye!

I have now been given the official go ahead today from the Parish Council that Mad Dogs is once again welcome in Great Haseley. This is to say the venue is booked and free of cricket on Saturday 1st June and Sunday the 2nd as a back up against bad weather, or for anyone who wants a double dose of FPV good times!

Please book your spot by paying £10 into my Paypal account which is [email protected]
This money is handed directly over to the Parish Council for the use of the facilities for the day at £10 per flyer on the day. Family, children and friends don't pay anything. If for any reason due to weather etc. it is cancelled all monies received will be reimbursed.

The reason I'm asking for money upfront to book is to get an accurate number of pilots coming. We may have to cap the amount of pilots on the day, or organise ourselves with slots to avoid frequency clashes. Last time we had 10 flyers and it was 'pretty comfortable' and everyone got a couple of flights in. Your suggestions please!

As to food I will put a budget together based on the number of confirmed people (and please let me know if you're bringing partners, children etc and how many).

Most gave the thumbs up for South African Boerewors Rolls, Salad and Beer for lunch, together with a constant stream of mineral water, tea, coffee and biscuits throughout the day. I'll make sure there are ample croissants, ham, bacon, cheese etc for a quick brekkie before flying.

For those interested in coming the night before or staying late on the day, I'll have my Bixler properly set up and would be happy to take you on a Night Flight FlyBoySee style :)

Anyone wanting to book my couch, or garden for camping please let me know. Anyone coming from over 100 miles away I'll only be too glad to pay your £10 and lunch.

Let's make this the best Mad Dogs ever!

(PS: I have provisionally booked the same venue for the 7 September for our Summer Meet.)

Richard

any places left?

I don't see why not Keukpa - sign up and you're confirmed. If anyone / everyone then wishes to call it at a certain number, they should discuss it here. We have previously had 10 and found this was a comfortable-ish quota for frequency management etc. Much more than that and we may run into problems. No point in having big numbers at a meet and there are few flying spots and the clashes of frequencies becomes a problem.

Is anyone prepared to help manage the flying combo's to help ensure we don't run into problems? Or have any ideas to manage things better on the day for an enjoyable and safe meet?

For example, I have 2.4 video on one rig. I don't really want to be flying with someone who has 2.4 control.

What do you all think about the above points?

I'm more than happy to help in any way I can, but I'm not sure how the video side works, like how many is it safe to fly together,I've still got my 35Mhz gear (with plenty of xtals) would it help if I used that for the day?

I should be coming, but as always cant confirm until closer to the time.

We had 3 immersion 5.8s in the air yesterday with no probs.  ;D

Yeah the video was spot on, even when some of the planes were on the deck :)

We need to try 4 pilots on 1,3,5 & 7 :D

We also need to take control into account. Those on Dragon Link and other LRS Systems have no impact, but 2.4 sits on my video, possibly others too...

Hi guys - is there room for one more? A dirty dozen? Just mentioned the thread to my wife and she said 'sounds like fun, you should go...'  :o  :D

She's just had a hip replacement op, so I'd been wary of abandoning her, but with her encouragement I think it has to be done. But only if there's room for one more...

Vtx is 5.8 and r/c is 2.4. Will bring my Phantom Photoship as well as an fpv kitted foamie...

Cheers,
Nick

Don't forget to attach your antennas to you vtx's.  Wasn't there a chap (no names lol) last time who nearly bit our heads off shouting someone had swamped his frequency by switching on another vtx during his flight :D  oh dear where's the antenna lol.  Easily done though swapping gear between models at the field.

I think the old fashioned peg board idea someone mentioned could be a good idea, if we can be arsed to do it.  Pegs for ImmersionRC channels then put peg back on the board once your model has gone out of range, stuck in a tree with flat lipo or safely landed and switched off.
:))

Thanks Charliewalker!

To simplify things even further, I'm thinking closer to the time we can analyse the list of RC and video frequencies and then group set ups into group 1, 2, 3 etc. Ahead of the time we'll know which combinations of Immersion and Foxtech (and others) can fly together and everyone can agree in advance which channels they'll be on. That way all the guys can preset their channels so there's not too much fiddling on the field, and know which set ups it's safe to fly with.

Does that sound like a plan?

With such great weather outside I suspect the feedback will come in later once all today's editing has been done :)

I have another idea for a competition on the day and have ordered 10m (30ft) of white polpropylene 50mm wide tape......

No not some odd S&M bondage session!!!!!

I thought we could use this to:

a) mark out a basic landing strip and practice landing cross wind etc. (we always tend to land into wind so it makes sense to practice other environments)

b) mark out boxes and land as close as possible to the centre of the box

c) Tape up any pilot who gets on my nerves ;)

d) bomb drop target?

e) impromptu aircraft rescuing device from "Jims tree" or "daves bush" (ooer).

any other ideas

Mad Dogs??!

Glad you asked Nick, CK and I were discussing this.

Mad Dogs 1 was held in Midwinter and it was awful cold, something terrible! Mad Dogs and Englishmen (the song by Noel Coward) refers to 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' going out in the mid day sun. Our little adventure was the extreme opposite, so a bit of a negative entendre if you will. While I'm British, I'm not an Englishman, so there's that... and any other meaning anyone else wants to attach to it to mythologise the story, you're welcome :)

The name just stuck from that.

I like it, and if there's anything in a name, then we should see people pushing their boundaries with their FPV. Harder! Better! Faster! Stronger!

Cool - that's a great story and pedigree... (for a mad dog)  :D

I was guessing too that that that was what the Morse code was spelling  :+

Meanwhile I'd better start practicing doing things harder, better, faster, stronger!

Thanks for that Dbox link - nice one.

You've done some crazy ass flying mate! I learned from the BEST! For anyone who doesn't know the story, I had lost two planes, one to a crash and one to The New Forest and had only about 10 mins of FPV flying under my belt. We've only got 12 people on the Google sheet thus far, if you haven't already can you please update your video/RC frequencies :

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Au6FU-OW2441dFN4blB2alhBTnBiUGV5dTI4dHFfbHc#gid=0

On sheet2 (bottom of page, see tab) I have started to group flyers.

Lots of you have listed multiple frequencies so I've put you into the group that looks most compatible, which may or may not be depending whether you are moving vtxs around or will be stuck with a specific plane.

At the moment it looks like we could potentially have 6 people up in the air at any one time. 4x 5.8 video and two people on 2.4 video.

Those running on 2.4RC are split into two groups of flyers.

So we have 3 groups of flyers so far.
Title: Re: Time for Mad Dogs 3! Southern Pilots Check-in
Post by: krikey on May 13, 2013, 01:16:43 PM
Id much rather fly :) But Id also not want to crash by being shot down :) Not having much experience with this, maybe we should ask the question about how to handle this with 14 + guests.

Should we simply allow only 4 in the air at the same time and if one person comes in whilst 3 are out, the next person flips on video and control quickly allowing the 3 flyers to holler before anyone falls out of the sky?

Or do we break up the flying into bands as discussed earlier so that we don't have any clash of signals.

So my understanding is that the problem bands will be when 2.4 video meets 2.4 control, when some flyers fly on 433-459 and the amount of users that can fly safely on 5.8 video with enough channel separation.

Is it safe to say that anyone on 2.4 control will probably not affect other users on 2.4 control because of frequency hopping?

I think it makes sense to list the video frequency rather than the channel as this may help to get enough separation or at least understand what kit works with other kit for example boscam and immersion.

How do the immersion frequencies 5740, 5760, 5780, 5800, 5820, 5840, 5860MHz map to the channel numbers everyone is quoting?

UPDATE: the frequencies are on the back of the original immersionRC packaging, so I added them to the spreadsheet.

Id much rather fly :) But Id also not want to crash by being shot down :) Not having much experience with this, maybe we should ask the question about how to handle this with 14 + guests.

We should have a session in the morning, setting everyone's frequencies up and testing on the ground to ensure compatibility.

Those of us with working RTH systems should go up first, leaving those that don't to go up last.

My Skywalker can loiter for 45 minutes over head and my RVOSD will keep it safe, so I'm happy to be a guinea pig :)

That would work if everyone arrived at the same time, which will not be the case.

There also may be limited amounts of setup some people can do - with VTX's buried in planes, video channels may not be changable for all.

i think 4 people in the air at a time is pushing it personally.  2 Is fairly easy to manage, 3 can be tricky - but doable.  4 starts to worry me.... I am worrysome though :D
Title: Re: Time for Mad Dogs 3! Southern Pilots Check-in

My VTX is in the wing, but I'll cut it out and put it on velcro or something prior to the day, if only so I can be flexible and therefore do as much flying as possible. Otherwise it will be much harder to organise if people can't switch channels.

With 14 people wanting to fly, assuming a max of 4 people in the air and a 45hr flying window, each of us will potentially get to fly once every 2.5 hours or so.

If anyone is unable to switch channels can you update the spreadsheet to say so and list your fixed channel.

I'm glad this is being discussed at length.

Firstly, I think we should just all agree and understand that we can't all fly our batteries out back to back all day long. This is kinda what happened with some people at the last two meets and no fault of their own. With ten flyers it was getting quite busy and there were a few hairy moments, but no catastrophe's - well none ascribed to frequencies anyway! :)

The day is also about meeting people, riding passenger etc. having a coupe of beers, some food and a laugh! So I think we should all be reasonably prepared to have a couple of flights, let everyone get their flights in (safely, without major interference) and just have a generally good time!

With Neil bringing his projector riding passenger will be easier than ever, chilling out in the club house area watching the action from inside (and out).

I guess we could also split up a bit and have a few flyers launching from another field? I wanted to try out a remote take off as well. Am I right in saying the real issues arise because of our ground stations being close, or is it more to do with proximity of the various transmitters?

Regrettably, I think we should think about closing the meet off now for new pilots. Do we all agree? Can I say those wanting to come of the interested but not confirmed list should pay for their spot by say midnight tonight, then we close off? So Mark, Will etc. please act soon to avoid disappointment.

A last point is that everyone who have come to the meets so far have been great blokes, friendly and very approachable. I reckon whatever number we are on the day, we simply handle our congestion with good communication, humour and respect for a successful day out :)

PS: Remember people flying 2.4 video will be affected by 2.4 radio, Frsky etc.

Yes I agree on closing the applications, anyone interested probably would have come forward by now.

I also agree on the flying aspect, if you want to fly all day going to an FPV meet probably isn't the best choice, that being said I'm sure we all expect to get a few flights in at least so the more organized we can be the better!

What airline is that?   Being a Friday you want to travel on, there will be less chance of a change of flight, unless its a stupid o 'clock flight time.   But worth a go if you get to the airport in time to try.  Have blagged my way onto earlier flights a few times. Good luck

Hey Brucey

I'm hoping you'll get a lucky break with a Friday flight. Being a week away, is there no way you can just call in a change with the airline?

I'm sure you've thought of all the options - so good luck, looking forward to meeting you if all goes well.

Weather!

Does anybody have any predictions? The 15 day forecast says a lovely day at 16 degrees with 19MPH winds. My experience tells me that the forecast gets more accurate as the day approaches. Hopefully we'll have 5MPH from the west - we've been lucky with the first two, let's hope this one is good weather wise too.

By the way, the Sunday option is open to us as  back up for weather, so if it's going to be howling that's something to consider, and as you all know I'm always keen to fly. Since we have a lot of people coming, does anyone who can't make it on day one want to think about Sunday, or those coming on Saturday maybe wanting a double dose?

Talk to me!

As for Sunday flying, I'm up for this if I can't make Sat!
As for weather, it's way to far down the line to get anything close to an accurate prediction.

Hi Guys!

I attended the FPV Bounce meetup this weekend and learned a helluva lot about frequency separation etc. We had at times 7 planes or more in the air and the way this was handled was by having a long flight line. Basically you put 5.8 GHz video on one end and 2.4 GHz video on the other and then fill the places in towards the centre. This way there is the best possible separation between ground stations. We assume that anyone flying 2.4 control will be on 5.8 video ad those flying on 2.4 video will / should definitely not be on 2.4 control.

There will still be some interference from time to time and the best way to handle this is for everyone to shout "5.8 video switching on!' or "2.4 video switching on!" as loud as possible and if there is a conflict the affected person screams back "Switch off!" or something to that effect and all will be well, ie: interference for no more then say two or three seconds.

Once the planes are up the only thing affecting interference is people's proximity to each other, so around 10m between ground stations should be the best, or a bit tighter if we want to fit in the full 15.

While you may be on one or the other side of the field without an easy way to launch, let's all give each other a hand with launching so that the pilot flying doesn't have to stray away from his position. It worked really well at Bounce and as I said there were no black outs for more than a second or so.

The flight line should then move clockwise or anti clockwise depending on the wind direction. In the middle between 2.4 and 5.8 is the cricket pitch which is a no go area (unless you're retrieving a crash :) )

I think if you are flying any other video frequency please work out your interference potential before hand by calculating your harmonics and consider how it may affect other people's video or control.

Here's a diagram of what I mean...

Flight line sounds like a good idea, and yeah everyone shouting when they are going ON means someone can shout back if it messes up their shit.

7 aircraft in the air at once, that sounds wicked! what mix of setups was that do you know?

Hi Dogz, was mainly 5.8 with Frsky on one end and 2.4 guys had mainly FM and Dragon on the other.... much better idea! Are you coming btw? I saw somewhere you said you'd like to fly in the country...? Well... this is pretty much the country :) I, on the other hand want to fly in London proper!

That's the one mate. It's a bit less pristine, having seen a lot of hot glue since then, but fingers crossed for a more successful FPV flight this time!

Hi Dave

By all means, we'll be having beers at the pub on Friday night and I may also still be getting a plane ready. I crashed my Penguin at FPV Bounce this past weekend and while I have a replacement I don't want to rush it. I have stripped the electronics out of the Bixler and need to put it together again for Saturday. It's a very busy week for me work wise so it may come down to the wire :)

Let me know if you don't still have my number, otherwise call me Friday when you get in and we'll sink a few!

Also looking forward to flying passenger on that bipe!

Cheers

Richard

FOOD, BEER & COOLIES

Hi All!

Time is aproaching and I have made some enquiries into food etc.

Here's my suggestion :

1. Breakfast: A Continental / Finger Breakfast of Baguette, Croissant, Cheese, Ham, Tea and Coffee.
2. Tea / Coffee / Biscuits / Cool Drinks and Water on tap all day long.
3. Lunch : A South African style Braai (Barbeque) of Boerewors (Sausage) on Rolls with Salads and SA Beer!

I'm happy to wear the apron for the day and make sure the food etc. is well organised. This will mean you can get good quality and quantity sustenance throughout the day without the hassle of having to bring stuff with you, or head out to the Services.

Assuming all 15 arrive (and that you have a healthy appetite like me) this should all come to somewhere in the ball park of £155. That would get us all at least 2 - 3 Boerrie Rolls and a couple of beers or so a head. It's probably more than it would cost to buy Pork sausies etc but I can assure you it will be well worth it :)

(http://s8.postimg.org/q3gxrjkkh/boerewors_rolls.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/q3gxrjkkh/)
(http://s12.postimg.org/pmzl26pg9/Castle_Lager_6pk1.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/pmzl26pg9/)

Are you all happy to chip in around a tenner for the day's munching, or would you prefer to bring your own / head to the shops? I think it would be best if we all did the same thing so we can fly together, crash together and break some bread together.

Please let me know by Wednesday night so that I can order the right quantities in if you agree and please let me know if you'll be bringing partners or children. No doubt mine will come just around lunch time :)

Richard

I'm happy to chip in money and go with the BBQ idea.... as long as it's not too much hassle for you.  I might even drink a beer.... given that I don't really drink I'll probably spend the next 4 hours passed out in my comfy chair.  Just give me a nudge when it's time to leave.

I'm happy to chip in money and go with the BBQ idea.... as long as it's not too much hassle for you.  I might even drink a beer.... given that I don't really drink I'll probably spend the next 4 hours passed out in my comfy chair.  Just give me a nudge when it's time to leave.

Wayne, I'm not even sure I'll have a plane to fly by the weekend - this week is nuts work wise for me, but as to laying out and running the BBQ, no problem. I was born with a pair on tongs in my hand (and a beer in the other)!

Bring all the bits ill tinker if you feed me burgers :)

Flyboysee that is very gracious of you to organize the food. Happy to chip in money and time wise if you need a second pair of hands.

Never had a proper SA BBQ so I'm looking forward to it!

It's looking less and less likely that I will make Sat due to work and flights home. There was some talk of some flying on Sunday? Anybody doing both days?

I'll be up for nosh! Consider my £10 in your back pocket Rich. Is there anywhere around I can potentially pitch up for camping?

Oops - somehow missed this yesterday...

But yeah, BBQ plans sound epic!  So count me in Richard.

Finally bought a GoPro3 so will be trying to hang that under the Phantom to see if I can get some decent shots... blades are balanced and fingers crossed.

I plan to make a checklist tomorrow so I don't turn up without batteries or Tx... or some other critical part!

It has happened before  :-[

Cheers,
Nick

Wind gusts (according to Metoffice) up to 24mph for most of the day. That should be fine for the bigger planes and craft with stabilisation but it will make for some interesting flying for smaller craft I'll wager.

I was flying my Skywalker in 24 winds the other day and its amazing how much crabbing you have to do to get to where you want to go.

Guys, as to the weather there seems to be conflicting reports then. This is a snippet from the 10 Day forecast, something I live my life by :)

(http://s13.postimg.org/y6opq68z7/Weather.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/y6opq68z7/)

If this one is off and the 28mph one is in, I am happy to move the day to Sunday, or do both days as we please. As to food and set up etc. I'll do that on the day that the bulk of people agree to come.

I would say let's stick with Saturday, then if it's crap, we take it minute by minute and decide then and there if we continue on Sunday.

I dunno about the weather, you guys have been here longer than me :)

Guys, on the catering side I don't want to be caught pants down with either too much or too little food. So whether you've said so in the thread or not, please send me a PM with the following subject line. BBQ: Yes / no.

If you want to discuss anything else pls send a separate PM. This way I can place my orders and have exact numbers by looking at the various PM headers, without having to open them. My orders for food have to be in by 2pm on Thursday (tomorrow).

Thanks!

Is the Pope Catholic?

There are about 5 double plugs dotted around the club house. Would be nice if a couple people brought with some 5 way plugs - that would be handy!

I'll put up a final checklist on Friday eve for what to bring!

Keuk,

Remember its gusting not constant the windspeed currently is 12mph gusting to 20+. It makes it more interesting definitely, but not unachievable. The Bix will probably punch through the wind ok.

Well if you're doing a distance run, then we can always plan a route that follows a road. If you're close in, it'll only be a short walk of shame :) I plan on doing a 5km run and I'll probably follow a B road or something just in case.

Awesome, lets see if we can do it in formation and we can play a game of who has the biggest balls. First person to turn back loses LOL.

Seeing as this is the first time I'll be flying in an area that isn't full of people and houses, I intend to take advantage of all of that extra free space to explore :)

Aye, I see this thread is getting busy!

The food and beers are in the fridge at the Club House and tonight I got to do some work to see if I'll have a plane to fly. See the re-build thread here http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,13311.msg113383.html#msg113383 (http://www.fpvhub.com/index.php/topic,13311.msg113383.html#msg113383)

Also, very importantly, and since we seem to have a theme for food at least, I thought I'd fly my old colours...

I aim to be there for about 8:30 ish :)

just finished prepping stuff.

main aim is to get the caipi wing flying, even if its only los. i'm on jeti 2.4 with it but will be bringing my ezuhf gear too just in cast 2.4 is an issue.

also bringing 2 quads, a disco and a steadidrone. hoping to do a bit more fpv with the disco than the very tentative stuff ive done so far. was going to bring the s800, but that might be overkill.

also bringing the ground station i've been workingon, so hoping theres a few of you flying 5.8 with ezosd or tinytelemetry so i can cadge your signals to get it dialled in properly.

Yep I'm coming and loading the car with clobber in a sec.  tomorrow I'll be mainly flying low and next to the hedges to avoid those planks.  With the odd mere cat 'pop up' to check it's safe.  Naaaa it'll be fine what's the chances of lightening striking twice.

Only bringing my  2 ol faithful quads, but with plenty of lipos.  My next longer range fpv project, another home brew quad,  is still far from finished. Was hoping to have it done but never mind.

Ok better put everything in the boot ready I spose :)

Packed, ready and mostly over-excited :D  Emergency wellies are there for wandering through muddy fields looking for downed planes, and of course rope to help with trees... never hurts to be prepared.

Right. Let me be the first to thank our host Rich for organizing a fantastic day and providing breakfast, tea and coffee all day, beer and if all that wasn't enough cooking on the barbie some excellent boerewors sausages.
Not only that my Sky Surfer plane turned up today after 6 months in the hinterlands around Great Haseley.
I'll post some pics of it in a seperate thread.
It was great to meet up with some new faces as well
Thanks again Rich for organizing such a fantastic day.
All the best, Mark

Thanks Richard, as said above, for organising one fab day out... if a little windy for my humble little EasyStar. But with blue skies above and plenty of flying activity in and around the 'aerodrome' it was a great place to chill, learn from more experienced guys, and enjoy your uber-delicious BBQ.

I'm glad I had a chair, as travelling virtually care of those high speed 'wings' - at low level and high speed (well over 100mph) - really was something else!

Here's wishing you all good flying tomorrow!

Cheers,
Nick

First all massive thanks to Rich for organising this, not only the venue but also the food and beers. He slaved over the BBQ for hours today so I think he deserves a big round of (virtual) applause.

It was great to meet up with you all and to see what everyone else is doing FPV wise.

Got in a couple of good flights including some formation flying so I'm well happy. Hope to get some video up in the next couple of days time permitting.

Hiya Brucey

I take it you're back in the UK? It was a fantastic day thanks and you'll be glad to know that there are two hard core Mad Dogs now sleeping in the Club House ahead of another manic day's flying tomorrow.

Get to OX44 7JR - ish and look for the Playing Fields (ask someone) and look out for the bulldog posters dotted around town.

Neil, Wayne and myself worked on my Penguin this evening and it's almost ready to fly, so we plan to meet up between 8 and 9 though I may be a bit late co's I'll have my daughter.

The plan is to fly the field a while, then move on to Wolvercote and do the big area there along the river, so Mad Dogs is still officially open!

See you tomorrow!

Richard

Thanks a lot Rich for hosting and catering, very much appretiated!  Enjoyed the day and got a whole bunch of 5min flights in and sat in as passenger , on a whole bunch of  flights :).
Amazing that Mark was reunited with his plane that 'downed' and went missing back in DEC 2012 - even more amazing to watch the keychain cam onboard footage of the crash.
Bomb cam was interesting too lol and well spotted Neil to find Dave's accurate bomb drop in the adjacent field over the fence.  You guys have some pretty good fpv planes now . You've been well busy over the winter months building your craft!

Good to see everyone.
Cheers

It's a wrap!

Well, that's another hugely successful Mad Dogs in the bag!

Many thanks to all who came from near and far to make this the best Mad Dogs ever, and to those who helped in big and small ways to keep the place tidy and organised within the relative chaos, you are all rock stars!

Thanks also for being so nice, friendly and accommodating to my fellow villagers and for respecting their privacy by keeping to the fields. Feedback (gossip at the pub) is that this event is good for Great Haseley and I was approached by Dave Pickett today who asked if it would be okay to advertise the event as 'open to the public' for next time. Once again all feedback was very positive, a far cry from FPV soothsayers about people complaining wrt noise, proximity and invasion of privacy. [This statement is just reportage and not an invitation to open an old can of worms]. The point I'm making is that if we all behave as we did on Saturday, using common sense, FPV can only get a good rap!

That said, I'm sure the locals would love the experience Dave Pickett had by getting passenger rides around the village. Seeing the pub and his own house from the air was a real kick and now a talking point in town.

Perhaps we could get a local volunteer from the committee to cater in future with the proceeds going back into maintenance of the club house and fields. Win, win!

Anyway I don't want to blabber on too much!

News my side is that the clump of foam and electronics you saw on the table (aka my Penguin) was skillfully put together last night by myself, CurryKitten and Krikey (I owe you guys BIG TIME!) and was re-maidened (new fuse, old wings and tail feathers) and flew as good as/ better than usual today. My first take off was fully immersed in the goggles and I trimmed out FPV. With all the excitement and jet lag I forgot the motor was missing it's propshaft (which I gave away at FPV Bounce last week after the crash). My angels were working overtime as it only protested with violent vibrations and the sound of a flying tractor on downwind and I was able to glide it in for a greaser. I then swapped the motor for a 1300kv I had lying about, then undertook a long flight with Brucey chasing me far out from the village - see his video

Oh well! Wind speed was about zero :)

I'm looking forward to everyone posting up their stories and videos in the next few days. Remember to use the words Mad Dogs somewhere in your title so the clever bots on Youtube and Google can group them together and if you'd like to use the Mad Dogs sting with your intro here it is again

Mad Dogs FPV Meetup 1st June 2013, Great Haseley, Oxfordshire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THFgPepxP6g#ws)

You can download it from my Youtube with YT downloader, or if you'd prefer to get it from Dropbox please PM your email address and I'll invite you to the folder.

We may as well use the end of this thread for comments and suggestions about the meet. Feel free to discuss what could be done to improve it, and especially your ideas about a more organised flight line so that everyone gets to fly a decent amount of sorties on the day. Angelos, who organises FPV Bounce was with us on Saturday and gave me some great ideas about this subject, which I'll share here once you've had a chance to comment.

Once again, thank you all!

Richard

That's really good to get that positive feedback from the locals, and to create a buzz in the local pub! It was great to hear the comments from the two sets of passersby's watching my flying from your goggles.
As for things to think about for the future, I think it would be worth having a print out of channel number and actual frequency for all the common tx's. That way we can have max separation without guessing the dip switches.
Also even though we had a great flight together, when I was in the air waiting for you on the ground, I had zero picture in my goggles. Having a passenger on my plane was great as he could say what the picture was doing. Once you had taken off it was fine, until we lost each other and you got back before me, my picture got swamped again until I caught up.
I really enjoyed the formation flying and I will definitely make my vtx accessible for the future.

That's great news from the locals :D

The organisation was second to none Rich however As mentioned above if it becomes a bigger event it needs a little more technical organisation to prevent inevitable 'accidents' that may finish the event off :D

Video Compilation

Hi guys!

So far the early vids coming out of Mad Dogs have been excellent! It would be good to have a compilation and I'd be very happy to do it since I have very little of my own material from the day. If you are willing, please edit your best clips only with about 3 seconds lead in / out time for editing and post them up on the Mad Dogs Dropbox and give each clip a description of the action. Still photographs and any oddball / humorous stuff would be good too. Also give HD, as well as OSD of same scenes if possible to make it more interesting. Crashes are obvious favourites, so don't be shy to send those in :)

PM me your email address and I will send you an invitation to the Dropbox to upload to.

Please don't send whole videos, but only the top action (max 30 second or so clips) so I don't have to trawl through hours of footage and probably miss the best parts. There were quite a few chase flights so please say who was chasing who so I can stitch it together properly.

Should we say cut off time Thursday night 7pm this week? I should then have something up for the weekend. I'll be sure to add pilot credits etc etc on the video.

Cheers

Richard

Hi Brucey, as good as it is m8 I can't put major time into this. While on the airplane just chop up your raw vid into bits, name them, then upload to DB when next near bandwidth... Uncompressed HD is also a much better place to start :)

That'll be me then. So excited about getting the plane back and not leaving any of the expensive equipment behind, forgot the chair.
Dont worry I'll get in back in six months.

Video Video Video

Hi guys!

Just a reminder I'm starved for video from the day to make a compilation. I'm waiting on a couple of vids and pics from Stefan and Jim, did anyone else have footage they'd like to be included?

If so, please PM me your email address and I'll get you onto the Dropbox.

Cheers

Richard

Right guys, let's close this thread and move onto Numero Quattro on the new thread. The date will be changing but I'll post it up this week and we can start planning again.

Here is the video I did from 3, in case you haven't seen it!
